What would you guys pay??
 

I have a Pontiac 500557 400ci long block that a friend of mine wants to buy. It's a 75 and know theres nothing supre special about it, since its a thinner block and I don't want to rip him off, but just get a fair price for the both of us. I just took it out of a car that ran, so I know there's no issues with it. It just needs to have the heads, intake, and exh manifolds to be bolted on and he's good to go. What would something like that be worth??? Thanks in advance.:D

If it's got a lot of miles left on it, 350 bucks, assuming you're giving him the entire thing including heads and etc.

$150-200.00 It's still a core engine no matter what the owner tells you. I can't give that kind of stuff away if I had it.

Sold 2 good bare blks last yr for $150 ea.
Needed to get rid of them so i can move around in the garage.

$500 sounds fair to me also since it is complete and basically bolt in & go! Dave K.

They can't give them away on Ebay either. Where are all the people who would pay $500.00 when I get that kind of stuff? I had a complete good running 400 engine that swaped hands a bunch of times for $200.00. A member on this BB had the engine in his car.

$500 only if it was a 455..:attention

$300-350.00 if it's a 455 with the car included LOL.

I was plucking short blocks out of the recycling center for $25.00 each.

I bought a running 400 for $400, complete. I also bought a standard bore 400 block ('71) for $125. I'd say $200-250 for the short block.

Thanks for the comments- I had a rough idea of 400-500. I mean, the whole bottom end is built, and is good, I know this for a fact....it was in my car! It's got a RAIV cam and crank, it just needs a set of heads and intake and manifolds. It's not like some rusted out bare block I just found in a junk yard.:beerchug:

500557 block,you'd hafta give it to me,I'm not paying good money for thin webs,no sale here,,,sorry.

And a RAIV cam in a 400,,,he better have some 72 cc heads and 3.90 gears or better. :o

A recipe for disaster with a thin web block IMHO. :eek:

Uggghhh,I'd give maybe $150.00.

And only if I was needing something to dump into a car to sell it,because I would never build something like that for my own car.

I know this is harsh commentary,again I appologize for that,but the part where you started to rationalize the price you had in your head just kinda got to me.

Eagle rods and Ross forgings???
If it had good rods and forged pistons they might add a little to the price,at least they could be salvaged for a decent start to something I could actually use.

Look, I'll be the first to admit I'm no Pontiac expert....He just wants a motor for his Lemans driver, That's it. He isn't bracket racing it, autocrossing it or anything. He just needs a Pontiac motor. And I know the RAIV crank is worth $, but like I said before, he's a friend, and unless i use it as a paperweight, I'm not going to use it, so I'm happy if he can. The motor is solid. It was in my Judge I recently sold, it ran great, and I took this one out and sold the car with the correct RAIII motor. I love these forums, ask a simple question, and get a complex answer.:D

The recycling center would probably take a case of beer instead of the $25.00 even if it was cheap beer.

Here's a simple answer, if this dude is your friend, hook him up with a good shortblock for a good deal... sell him the engine for as little as you can afford to. I don't mean give it away, but make it cheap, like $200. A 557 block is not anything awesome anyway, so no biggie. Then he can get his LeMans together and you guys can go cruise together this summer. There's never enough pontiac guys around. There is huge karma when it comes to car parts and your car buddies... hook it up and you will get a hookup later from the hot rod gods when you need it... just seems to work like that. I've gotten so many cars and parts for next to nothing from my friends and I am very grateful... I love all my friends, each one of them is so awesome in his own way.

I sold my buddy a whole front clip, grills and bumper and everything from my 67 Lemans parts car for dirt cheap... friendship is worth more than the parts or the money.

Come to think of it, if it were not for my gearhead friends hooking me up with the deal, I would have never even found my 67 gto. It was hidden in a friend's friend's neighbor's back yard. (I scored it for $700 in 2002) My point is what goes around, comes around with us hot rodders.

I agree with that completely, but I'm also trying to fund 2 frame off resto projects at the same time, so my parts I'm not using I've been selling off for xtra $$ to help pay for stuff, so while I don't want to hose him, I can't afford to let money go out the window.:beerchug:

If he is a real friend, just give it to him and tell him he owes you one someday. You'll feel great for helping out a friend in need.

please stop saying ram air IV "crank"...there is no such thing...maybe you mean cam...i paid $300. for my running 1970 .30 400 short block balanced with trw pistons...if he is a good friend $200. is fair...400's are very common...

Be fair. No more than a couple hundred bucks ( that's a couple hundred you don't have isn't it). He has no interest in funding your two frame off restorations.
