800HP D Port
The latest dyno results of my 469 cid engine are in. We were able to make a little over 800 naturally aspirated HP with my self imposed limits of OEM block, OEM crank and OEM D port head. It made 806 HP at 6700 and 695 lbs ft Torque at 5100. Volumetric efficiency peaked at a very nice 127.1%.
1969 428 Block; 4.190” bore; Filled to bottom of freeze plugs; 3 center billet caps 9799103 “N” 455 crank stroked to 4.250”; Radiused counterweights to reduce windage 6.782” connecting rod JE flat top pistons Child and Albert gapless rings #48 heads; substantial port work; flowed over 315 cfm with intake and carb; much epoxy 2.110”/1.770” REV custom valves 13:1 compression Isky Solid roller cam; approx 270/280 at .050”; installed at 105 IC 1.65 Crane gold roller rockers Manton 9.400” pushrods Victor intake welded and heavily ported; polished exterior; 1” spacer 1050 Dominator; tweaked MSD billet distributor; crank trigger 2” Hedman Hustler headers; 30” collector extension Star Vacuum pump Custom built oil pan Best power was made with 32 degrees timing, 10” vacuum pump setting, 88 jets, 145 water temp and 130 oil temp. Built a sheetmetal intake for this combination but it was down on HP and torque slightly from the Victor, long story but I wanted to run the shaker on my 71 TA so some compromises were made in the initial design. Thanks for the kind words. It was a project that I let drag on for three years. The heads took the longest to get them to do what I had envisioned.
Exhaust went 206 cfm @ .700" lift @28" on our bench with the 2" car header attached. Jim |

Jim, I am jealous. What a great D-port accomplishment-in fact that would be impressive with aluminum round ports. (Jim is a really nice guy too) cigars were good. LOL

Oh...and those intake ports are "purdy". Did you have to go to an offset lifter? Looks like the pushrod holes were moved over quite a bit.

Larry don't throw them away just hog them out more from your 180cc port! But then that will hurt that "small port velocity" everyone talks about with D ports because the ccs will get closer to E head/ported KRE size.
Looks like head bolt tube as well as pushrod tubes and all that epoxy on top to raise the port, and just a nub of a guide.Bet it's at least 215cc. LOTS of good shaping and grinding there, very nice. Man my buddies 48s were barely 200 cfm on the intake side, took some moderate porting to even get them to 225. |

very nice head work. i know how much grinding that is involved in those heads. i would guess you have well over 300 hrs in the heads?

I just wanted to note these are not those same "small" D ports making big HP before you hard core D port fans start suggesting they are! Kind of like the 310+cfm KRE heads aren't 185cc! It takes a larger port to move that kind of air and make that kind of HP no matter what the material or head that is started with. Obviously a well done head!
I'll bet ALOT of hours and "black boogers" from all that porting! So got any chamber pictures to see what they look like using such little timing? |

We used C-16 VP fuel
The intake port is 218ccs good eye Skip. Yes we hit everything - water, air, bolts, and pushrods. Pushrods are moved a little over .200". Very light aluminum GRP rod. Engine is now in a 71 T/A. It ran low 11s at 3565lbs with the mild 462 that is pictured with the Warrior on the website. 300 hours...Probably close I lost track a long time ago. :-) Min cross section is right at 2.85sq in Jim |
i know you hit air at a 2.85 min csa. alittle off the subject, but about maxed out iron heads....i saw a set of iron sbc heads at Meaux's shop that was on a national record holder car. they literally made the ports. welding, re shaping, countless hours involved. they gave up on running them wet and just ran the things dry.

Made a different single four top and will try that in the car. Another self imposed limit for this project; I am running the shaker. In other words I am out of wiggle room. The Victor did so well that at this point it will probably be the manifold to run.

Jim neat job! I'm kind of partial to having a Shaker also, especially on the motor.The iron heads stealth is even better!-You need to massage something to at least have the Shaker sitting on the motor,add that hot air hose to hide even more and look stock.
What are the intake port dimensions? Got an extra Victor that is almost that big I think. Not too bad a "calibrated eyeball" I got! Larry if you really have read my posts in regards to iron heads I've never said they can't be made to flow good numbers. I've repeated said once you start getting really good numbers though you end up getting larger volumes-like your heads and like Jim's major massaged here, or Lynn's Super Stock major reshaped,massaged, then epoxy filled heads. Then we are right at the same volume as KRE and E heads for the same flow and do NOT still have the increased velocity of a small port that is always the put down of aftermarket heads. It generally takes a larger port to flow the big numbers! Even your heads are larger than what pushes that 4000+lb wagon in the 11s,few if any other ported D ports are as small as Jim Hands for the flow.Let's see 300 hours at even a $20/hr shop rate $6000! The Buick guys have a stock appearing class. Paper thin iron heads, 12:1,cast iron manifolds you can almost see through hauling a$$! These heads would work for a Pontiac in a similar class. Dave Gessler that posts here some is king of the Buicks that do this.
Larry just sell that SD car and put a 535ci Kaufman head motor in the black car! Then you can lug it all you want with the 3.23s! But I'd get a Jerico in front of them:)! And you'd still have money for college tutions! |
