Deer.... Stupid Question?????
 

Well, you yanks might think it's stupid...

But I hear about deer in America and I wonder, are they native animals to North America or are they an introduced species???:noidea:

We have deer here too but they are defineatly introduced. Never were here till 100 years ago when they were brought in for venison, some escaped and now they are dotted around in the mountains. I've never seen one wild though. They are fairly scarce.

Native species. The screwed up thing is that there are more now than there were 400 years ago. No real predators with the exception of hunters. Coyotes eat the little ones sometimes.

I shot one at close range with a BB gun 2 nights ago (enough pumps to kill a squirrel) and it whirrled around, bucked a little, looked at me and then went back to eating my yard. Dogs have even given up on them.

There are a lot of them in some areas of the country. Here in Minnesota it's not uncommon to see them when driving through the country in the evening. Last month I was drove across Wisconsin, and it seemed like every five miles or so there was another dead deer laying on the side of the road.

Here in New Jersey their like vermin, they are everywhere, they eat everything, their rotting corpses are all over the roadsides. Around here the deer are a real problem.

Cut out the tenderloin, toss the rest. Think of the people we could feed with all these darn things. No fat either. Trade that for oil.

I depend on deer for my livelihood, I run a collision repair center. :D

it's remarkable how much damage a deer can do. my neighbor it a deer in his porsche and it looked like it could have been a telephone pole except for all the blood.

Sounds like our Kangaroos!!!! In some locations you can see a dead one every 500 metres especially in the dry season. They feed closer to the roadside because there is no stock to eat the grass. They sleep mostly during the day then emerge at dusk when they are most active. As a general rule if you see one there are 20 others very close by that you don't see.

12 months ago I came perilously close to hitting about 6 of them as I was driving my Grand Prix. Man I had all anchors out and had the old girl standing on its nose. Just managed to pull up in time.:eek:

Make bloody good eating though. I've tried venison and I'd eat Kangaroo EVERY TIME in preference. Anyway, thanks for the education:)

We have that too, but I think participation is low. Real problem is that so many of the hunters became so bad about getting wasted & trashing property, shooting critters & things they should not that nobody will let them hunt on their property anymore.

Ian, I have often thought that we could take a lesson from down under and adapt our vehicles with some of the equipment like I have seen on rigs down under. The tenderloin & sausage as Mike says are the only good parts though I have eaten many a hind quarter that was good.

Shoot, the deer here in Indiana would just step on that snakes head, and continue brousing ;)

Wife just got back her '06 GXP Grand Prix. Over $12,000.00 repair bill. The deer lost but I guess its all relative. Can't speak highly enough for OnStar. She was out in the middle of Nowhere West Texas when the deer ran out in front of her. Air bags deployed. Before she could pull over to the side of the road, OnStar was calling and offering assistance. They sent 1st responders via GPS coordinates. She said she felt in total control thanks to the good brakes and suspension. Her and passenger had very minor injuries mostly from the airbags. The car and driver are good as new.

i'd rather deal with the deer. i hear that rattle snake eats well tho.


my grandad's generation spent way too much time getting rid of those snakes to reintroduce them now although some idiots are trying.

We can thank all the animal rights folks that have never hit one or lost a loved on that has hit one and came thru the windshield. These folks cannot get the movie bambi out of their heads. Most animals are cute and cuddly and seem so innocent. I dont see a need for them myself if you cannot sell the meat. You would think with all the people who are up in arms about americas obesity problem you would think they would let people sell the deer to corporations to process and package and sell it. It is healthier than anything out there accept fish and myself cannot go without eating red meat at least 3 times a week and I know I am not alone. These animals are no where near becoming extinct, and there needs to be no doe days, you should be able to kill a doe any time during the season. They are distructive and deadly and since we will continue to cut down trees and clear land for development to no end we got to get rid of them. They do nothing for nature (and our gardens) except eat it.
