Is there anything JB weld can't do? Seriously.
 
Here's my JB story.....once upon a time, one of the seams on my radiator was badly corroded, and eventually the pressure blew it apart. I tried every 'quick fix' product I could find...and had at least 5 different leak stoppers running through my cooling system, and the leak persisted.

It was SO bad, that it would leak a gallon faster than I could pour it into the top.

After a couple days, I finally decided to fix the leak. I sanded away the rust/corrosion, and hammered shut the seam as best I could....then I JB welded the whole seam, from top to bottom. It's been running great with no leaks for about a thousand miles now.


So the question is...is there anything it can't do?

The only thing I have found is it will not hold up in impact situations. It is strong but for instance on a Dirt bike the clutch handle was broke in the middle, I pulled and released it several times. The first time I let it snap back it broke back in half. But I have used it in many applications that worked good...

using it for a head gasket in my tractor. The thing has some time on it now too. still has more power than when it was new. Higher CR and Quench. A guy that pulls tractors told me to do it. its pretty sweet even if I have to replace it every year or two. (havent had to yet) well worth it for the benifit(Noticable):)

I used it to fill the extra holes in the heads, the choke tube holes & the EGR holes when I built the 400 for my 68. It worked great!

I wonder if you could fill your exhaust crossover with it? And possibly use it for building up the ports on the intakes, and intake runners? Is is solvent and heat resistant?

I think it's got a decent resistance to heat. You'll have to verify that though.

JB Weld is good to 600F...I jsut patched up an aluminum radiator with it this week.

Fixed my condenser with it, I was just going to replace it but couldn't remove the fittings without damaging the hoses. Been working for 3 months now, ice cold A/C!

it has resisted at least double that in this case. I think it helps being sandwiched and thin:oogle:

Used it on an oil pan. It stayed there for 240,000 plus miles without a leak!

I used it on some aluminum air-cooled VW heads, this was about 30 years ago.:old:

I was porting them and raising the roofs of the intake ports, ended up with a few pinholes.

I put a little dab of JB Weld on the pinholes, and it held up fine for a year or so until I stopped running those heads on my engine. The JB was hanging in there no problem, these heads regularly saw temps of 350+ degrees.

They were on an 1835cc 13-second street-racer special. I beat the crap out of it on a regular basis like any normal 18 year-old would. :burnout:

Good stuff that JB Weld.

It sure is.....I love any oppurtunity I get to use it. I'm kinda bummed that nothing's broke, lol. I keep thinking about how I should just replace that old worn out radiator I repaired with JB Weld....but it's still holding strong.

used the stuff to patch a burn channel when a headgasket blew on a old ford farm truck (351 w) , just mixed it up and smeared it in the groove and then trimmed off the remainder in the bores with a knife ans slapped the head gasket on , well its been 7 years since we did that and the motor is still running great operating a irrigation pump but the body died , I have used it when porting pontiac heads it works great on the intake but burns off on the exaust ,for crossovers we use a furnace cement they sell it at home depot you have to put it in a little at a time so it will dry

Anyone re-attached broken studs to pot metal parts? I have chrome tail panel that two studs popped off of.

I would say that this is one thing that the JB won't handle.

Sure, you can re-attach them, but any twisting or tension from snugging it down is going to make the studs pop right off.

The way to go would be to weld/attach some steel studs to a thin metal plate, as large a plate as you can get away with. Then use the JB to bond the plate with the studs to the backside of the trim piece, after roughing up the surface on both parts.

Last winter we used it to reattached the gas filler neck on a snowmobile, it held up for the weekend with a slight leak, but it is plastic. The other day I was in the garage showing somebody the sled and was telling them about it and when I grabbed it it broke off.

i used it for my timing cover that had a little bit of corroding around the water passage surface just dug out the bad parts filled with jb and sanded own to match the re3st of the cover and it worke good, but most of the jb was in the gasket surface i dnt thin it will be under tremendous pressure

I tried to fix this glass candle holder for my wife. The Cat knocked it over. I tried averything, then she said I can tie something over it. I thought JB??? It worked great! Sanded easy and can be molded like bondo!! pics arent that great, flash is on glass after all.

I see LOTS of q-jets that have had JB Weld dabbed over the bottom plugs. It doesn't work well for this purpose. The fuel will "soften" the glue and lots of heating/cooling cycles will cause it to come loose.

Just yesterday I pressure tested one that looked like it was still holding fine, and it leaked right thru the JB Weld on one side. That particular repair didn't look that old, but I've learned to remove the JB weld, pull the plugs, thread the castings and use screw in plugs coated with Marine Tex instead....Cliff

I've used it to successfully patch the leaking radiator in my 79 Camaro in '92 or '93. It was leaking where the upper hose connection meets the tank. I was bucks down and desperate. The fix lasted a full year till the radiator started leaking again from pin holes in the tank but by then I was better off and bought a new radiator. Definitely sold me on the product.

I noticed by other replies it seems to do well on radiators- it must like brass.

Recently (last summer) I used it to glue a small hose connector back on that was cast into the side-cover of a 92 EX500 (baby Ninja). The connector had broken off very cleanly so I figured "Why not? its only a few bucks to try...". No problems. This was another "cooling system fix".

Also I tried to use it to patch a large "burst" at a muffler seam on the Camaro. That fix...not so successful. :)

I like the stuff, but must admit it let me down bigtime when I used it on my timing cover where there was a hole between the water side and oil side. I had prepped it well, and it just lost adhesion to the casting after being heated and cooled by the antifreeze a few cycles. It didn't dissolve or anything, but stopped sticking. I wish I had thought more about the consequences of it failing before I chose to use it there.

JB Weld has worked great for me in all applications EXCEPT putting studs back on some 66 GTO tail light bezels.

No, you definitely want to use a flexible filler to repair an Endura bumper.

I've got two.
1. It can't fix a cracked exhaust manifold heat riser. Not for long anyhow. I guess the extreme heat softens it. I tried it on my '69 LeSabre two or three times. It would repair the leak every time but would only last about 20 minutes into the first run.
Possibly I didn't get it quite clean enough by wire brushing but I just don't think it can stand the heat inside the manifold..

2. I once made a muffler out of thin aluminum for a 2 cycle model airplane engine. I glued it all together with JB Weld. That lasted about five minutes before it blew apart. High frequency vibration was probably the culprit there though...plus, very little mating surface for the parts that were assembled.
I did modify a factory muffler later for another similar engine and in that case it worked fine. Didn't crack until I crashed the plane sometime down the road...

i used jb weld on my 78 suzuki engine case when i put a hole in it while installing the gear shifter on, i had it a few years and never leaked

Yes, it can't fix a radiator that you would ever want to have rebuilt one day.

I did this once, then a couple years later I went to have the rad recored.

The tank I used the JB on had to be replaced instead of repaired. Apparently once JB weld is on there, the rad shop can't get it off well enough to have clean metal to solder for the repair.

Fuel tanks, be careful. The patch softened up on me after a couple years and started dripping. Worked well enough for a while though.

I didn't use JB, but used Plastic Steel for a similar repair. I cleaned it really well and ran a brass screw through the pinhole through the casing. I still have the cover and it's still tight after 40-50 thousand street miles. The repair didn't separate from the casing, at all.

I wish I would have asked for help first !! My luck has been running that way lately. I'm glad to hear yours worked. I suspect putting a screw through it was a very smart call, and perhaps the adhesive you used is more resistant.

The pics attached show my failed repair. When I did the repair, the JB Weld was hard and well-bonded, as I was able to grind it flush with the casting surface with no hint of bad adhesion. You can see I did a decent job prepping the holes with a dremel burr, and the JB Weld did not disintegrate, but simply popped out of the casting. A screw through those holes probably would have trapped the epoxy and kept it from leaking (like yours), but I think the loss of adhesion is an unavoidable chemical reaction when exposed to hot antifreeze. It would be interesting to know if there are other adhesives that would hold up better in the same situation.

The white glop dribbling out of the failed repair site is what my oil looked like after being mixed with a couple gallons of coolant. :gag: The nuggets are the JB weld plugs that popped out and were laying inside the cavity when I pulled the water pump off.

Yours was much further deteriorated than mine was. For yours I would have prepped both sides, roughing the surface to get adhesion, smeared the JB-Weld on both sides, making sure it was pressed in from both sides. Then using a piece of roughed, light sheet aluminum on both sides as a strongback, pressed as closely to the cover surface as possible, with a minimum amount of epoxy between the cover and the metal. The excess epoxy can be used to cover the metal.

What you end up with is a sandwich with the cover and epoxy in the center, a thin coat of epoxy on both sides (as bonding agent), the sheet metal on both sides and then another layer of epoxy. You end up with the epoxy as one piece from the hole, under the metal and then around it over the sheet. The sheet may erode to some extent if it's exposed, but will still give strength to maintain the patch.

Doing it like that gives the epoxy some support so that it doesn't have the pressure pushing against a broad area trying to separate it from the cover.

The problem is caused by allowing the anti-freeze to get acid. When it does there's electrolysis between the aluminum and the cast-iron of the block, wasting the aluminum.

If you take a voltmeter, stick one probe into the anti-freeze and the other on the block, you can read a voltage. You should read less than 0.4 volts if the fluid is good.
