Old drag cars and racers - Post'em if you got'em
1 Attachment(s)
It's always cool to see the cars back in the day. There was something cool about the cars and the drivers. If you have any well known cars/racer great ! If you have any pictures of your local guys doing their thing in the 50/60/70's even better ! ..I'd like to see older pictures of some of this forum's members too.

My brothers car from the late 70's, Would bolt on a set of steels w/slicks to race on the weekends, seen lots of street racing. Total different stance then what we see now. The (Hill racing) setup was the hot ticket then. Or thats what he called it.
4.56's M-21 built 389. Was the hottest thing in town for that time period. He claims that he dipped into the 11's. Man how things have changed. John |
JKrull66 - I still like that look (don't tell anyone!) :D With 4.56's that car must have been a launching MF !

I have a few dozen of the fastest Pontiacs of the 50's-70's on my History page on my site if interested. Primarily dragsters, funny cars and stock cars, more to be added.

Here's a few:
The Corvair has 4 one bbls carbs on it; the GTO is (of course) a Tripower: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...1/63Covair.jpg The Lemans is a 421 engineering "mule" from General Motors: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...1/64LeMans.jpg This is the only pic I have been able to find of this car: it's a 421 Cat with the aluminum package and Bobcat appearance package: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...d001/63Cat.jpg Our "storage technique" for valuable cars: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...1/000_3555.jpg From 1969: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3.../GTO/69GMC.jpg Sometimes it does rain in Michigan; "Lapeer International Dragway" circa 1968/1969. It hasn't changed a bit in 40 years: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...8GTOresize.jpg |

Really cool pix. I also love seein old pix of cars, especially drag cars. Lets see more.
|
There was an old magazine article from the mid-60's that featured a "build up" on an early style funny car (when they still had steel bodies, left hand drive, and altered wheelbases). I can't remember if it was the Gay Infinity GTO or Swiatek's Grey Ghost GTO (I'll bet Steve rememebrs). Anyone remember what magazine this was in? I'd like to find myself a copy. I think some have actually posted scans of this article, as I've seen it on the 'net, but I can't find it now.

Gotta love the trailer !!! Reminds me of a few years back when the Ames caravan past me going to Norwalk. After I had gotten there I noticed that my trailer had broken and a part of it was swinging in the wind ! Steve Ames was nice enough to lend me a hack saw to cut the piece off so I did leave a piece of my trailer on the road on the way back ! Steve said, "When we pasted you in Penn., I was sure that your trailer was going to make it here"
|
GIVE ME MORE!! I like the front in the air stance of the 60s.Drag cars today just dont have personality like back then. I have some pix of myself sitting on a open hauler with
