Real world MPG for "new" GTO?
 

Anybody have real world hand calculated MPG numbers? Auto and stick.

I was around 18 I think in my 04 auto, mostly local driving with a heavy foot. Driving a bit differently though these days...

6spd 04's will get 26 if you keep out of it....
05-06 6spds will get 23 if you keep your foot out of it.

Autos are much worse

I constantly get 21-22 MPG on my 05 Auto just gettin on it once in a while, mostly highway, city driving or using the A/C knocks it down quickly to about 20. I like the car have about 27,000 on it and bought it brand new. I constanly get positive comments on the car, It gets noticed because of the color, It's Yellow jacket. Only problem I've had was the front end strut bushings which Pontiac fixed after some difficulty getting them to really look into why my tires were bald on the front end at 17,000 miles.

My 04 GTO 6 speed would average around 20mpg both city/highway, If I took it easy. The norm was around 17 mpg combined. On the highway it was anywhere between 24-26 depending on speed an conditions. A few times I was able to eek out around 29 mpg driving at around 60mph on a fairly flat highway surface.

Is it worth it to buy a 6.0?

My 04 gets around 17 combined with more street that highway.

My '04 gets about 21-22 on the freeway, about 17-18 around town.

Unless you are really against the drive by wire LS2, I'd go for an '05 or '06.

I agree on the suspension issues. I had my car "Pedderized" and continued to have strut rub problems. Even so, I got 30k out of my stock tires. I ended up trading my chrome 17" stock wheels for a set of stock 18s. No rubbing issues at all with the 18s. Wish I did that a long time ago.

Does helping the engine breath (cold air and exhaust) do anything for mileage?

Any benefits you get would be negated by wanting to hear that mellow sound. My 04 with a K&N and a catback averages about 20 MPG combined but if I nail it much it gets about the same mileage as a tri power. It is fun to drive thou.

I posted another thread about prices dropping on the new GTOs.
In Pontiac Enthusiast mag they had a blurb on an 04 with 58K miles for $11,900 selling on ebay and said prices MAY be declining.

Ive been watching one in Raleigh on a lot, been there for some time.

They are the best performance / "fun" for the buck out there imo.
Just a real neat car to drive if you can keep your foot out of it.

50 more horesepower on the 6.0 litre, just my opinion ,but I'd try to get an 05-06 for the extra power. It doesn't seem to affect mileage. Probably the 04 is going to be cheaper to buy though. Also no scoops on the hood and the weird 2 tailpipes on the left isn't my favorite look.It used to be that the 73 and 74 GTOs were'nt real GTOs, but the 04-06 has now become the Rodney Dangerfield of GTOs. I Guess that makes the 73-74 owners feel better though LMAO.

What is the overall impression with the car?
Comfortable, quiet, handleing etc?

Leaning towards a 6.0 stick. Getting a new job at work inside which takes my gas card away but gives me more than enough increase to compensate for fuel.

Comfortable with nice interior. Handles well and feels much more secure than an F body. Built quality is good. I've had no problems with my 04. Mine is not guiet with a catback.
Door locks are strange and you'll never want to use the back seat with the slow motion seat retractors.

6.0 for the 50+ but especially for the better brakes, dual exhaust and hood...

What are acceptable catbacks for daily use?

I saw a 10 sec 05 at a recent trip to the track for gtoaa event. This car was insane, exhaust volume at wot was soooo loud.

Is it suggested to run premium?

I don't like the f-boides, feel like I am driving a go-kart.

Here are my numbers......

The best ever MPG I got was 28.6. I reset the mode when I got on the turnpike and set the cruise at 70 mph. I went a good 50 mins without messing with the accelerator (no a/c) . This was on my way to Carlisle for the GM Nats. When I exited the turnpike the mpg dropped to the low to mid 27's. Prior to this reading my best was 27.6 straight turnpike driving from Pittsburgh to Lancaster non stop and at 70mph on cruise. 3 hours. (no a/c)

From Elizabethtown PA to Saratoga NY for the convention with a fully loaded trunk NO A/C I got 26.7 or so. On the way home with A/C I got high 24 to mid 25. All with cruise control and not "getting" on it. both were 5 hour drives.... My total gas cost up was 64.00 and gas back was 59.00 (cheaper priced gas down closer to home when I refueled)

When I jump on the bypass to make say a 30-45 min run I constantly get 25-26. I have done the math both manually and let the OBC calculate it and every time I compared both equated the same.

If I do normal stop and go I will get 18-19. I have encountered 16-17mph a few times
The absolute worse I ever got was 12mpg but that was in a 1.5 hour long parade.

05' GTO...... I was gentle on the engine after I purchased it in accordance to the manual. I change oil every 5K and the level is always full.

Those numbers are encouraging.

My automatic A4 '04 gets 20-21 overall. Cruising freeway at 70 mph gets me 23-25. If I drive it aggressively, 18-19 mpg. Not bad compared with my '64 GTO that got 13-15 mpg on the highway when it was new in 1964. I remember bragging about how good that was when driving to Niagara Falls for my honeymoon in 1964--all freeway. Come to think about it, it wasn't bad for a Tripower, 4 speed, with a 3.90 gear. Most of the time on the freeway, the tach was at 4000 rpm (80 mph).

It's an M6. I will use either 92 or 89 oct. I generally refill at 1/2 tank. I keep 92 in it mostly unless I see like a 10 cents or more price difference between 92 and 89. I will then go with the 89. Mixing between the 2 the octane should be about 90-91. I have never gone with a straight tank of 89.

The best ever mileage I got was a 50/50 mix. On the way to Saratoga and back was all 92. I will add I did not drive aggressively when I got those numbers. I have read where others have gotten similar mpg's.

Thats exactly what my A4 04 got!

My 06 6spd with a JBA cat back - not much louder than stock, K & N air intake and predator 93 octane tune with 160 degree thermostat averages 18 mpg around town driving somewhat agressive at times - hard not to want to drive a car like this. and gets 28 mpg on the highway. And I always check it after making 3 to 5 passes down the strip it shows 17 mpg.
This is one car you wont regret buying its quite inside and tight - no rattles,handles like its on rails rides excellant and runs like a scared rabbit. I wouldn't trade it for any other car out there its the best bang for the buck! Check out LS2GTO.COM lots of info on that site.

I always use 92 or 93 octane as lower octane pulls timing out of the engine. It had 89 in it when I bought it and it dropped the performance down some, enough that you could feel a difference. I have always used premuim in it since I bought it for that reason. And yes
I have a 2nd generation T/A and a 4th generation T/A, the 05 GTO handles as good as either of them. and does it without rattles and squeaks too. I have stock exhaust on mine and its fine for me. I got the need for loud exhaust out of my system when I was in my teens.

I usually use 87 octane in my '04 GTO. Can't feel a difference in performance between 87 and 91 octane gas in that car. Mileage seems better with 87 octane.

Also use 87 octane in my '07 Grand Prix GXP V8, which recommends premium fuel. Same story--can't feel performance diff between 87 and 91 octane. On the '64 GTO's, however, you barely can drive it unless it has 91 octane fuel. Pings like crazy with 87 or 89 octane.

I've gotten over 24 mpg with my automatic 2006. Normally I get 22mpg per tank with mixed driving.

Aggressive city driving can be near 15 mpg.

Magnaflow cat-back bumped up my mileage, as did the Volant CAI and Predator tuner.


Test drive one, then pick a color, you'll be sold.

I didn't buy mine with any thoughts to gas prices... I have to use 93 octane.

and it's not a garage queen.. get out and drive them boys and girls....

who cares about the MPG...

I got a superchager to imporve my MPG.....hehehhee

I'm coming into this thread a little late but my '06 M6 gets about 26 on the highway and only about 14 in town but that's because I enjoy the sound too much. It can be 100 degrees outside and I'll still ride around with the AC on but the windows down just so I can hear the exhaust. :D

I have Dynatech LT's, Hi-flo cats, X-pipe, Magnaflows, electric cutouts, and custom dyno tune. 388rwhp.

I have an M6 '06. I get 18-21 mpg back and forth to work. This involves very little stop and go driving so its a little biased. The best hwy mpg was a run up to PA to see my Dad with just me in the car and the normal luggage I got a best tank of 28 mpg. Last time ran up there with 3 people and all our luggage the best I got was 25.6 mpg. So it CAN do great on the hwy depending on how you drive it.
