1968 PONTIAC FIREBIRD 400 “SURVIVOR”



Sold new to Vernon B. Williams at Standard Pontiac in College Park Maryland 10-27-1967, the car was traded in a year and a half later on a full size family car. So there she sat, just waiting for its next owner. Robert Quick was walking the lot that day with his father to pick out his graduation gift. He was immediately drawn to the car, and a deal was made shortly after a test drive. From that day on, the car hasn’t seen another owner until now!

This Firebird left the factory with the 330 HP 400 YT mated to a TH400 automatic. Factory options included A/C, PB, PS, AM/FM Radio, Sport Steering Wheel, Black Custom Option Strato-Bucket Seats, Soft Ray Tinted Glass, Deluxe Wheel Covers and a Cordova Black Vinyl Top. The color was YY Mayfair Maize Yellow which is a rare color for 1968!

After attending American University in Maryland and only driving the car in the summer months, Bob was relocated to California. He made the trip cross country a few times and stayed there until 1978 when he was relocated to Indiana. After a year of Midwest weather and storage, Bob decided the car was no longer practical and took the car to his father’s vacation home in Eagle River Wisconsin. Here the car sat and was driven by the family when they were vacationing or visiting. After sitting for some time, they decided to have the motor and transmission re-done in 1993. After the motor and transmission were pulled, the shop recommended a lot of other work too. So, from the headlamps to the tail lamps all the little issues were handled.

Motor and transmission were completely disassembled and re-built with pictures documenting the entire process! The motor is still standard bore with new pistons, rings, bearing, seals, valves, springs, cam, etc. And the transmission received a complete re-build as well. Other items addressed were wheel cylinders, and bearings/seals, A/C system, pitman arm, heater, minor electrical issues, touch up minor paint chips and buff paint, etc. etc. etc. I have basically EVERY receipt that was ever related to this car no matter how small. All the receipts from 1970-1993 add up to $9,456.83! This is more than double the cost of the car itself.

What ever the car needed, it got and was very well taken care of. Everything on this car works, right down to the air conditioning that blows cold on those hot and humid summer days! Since 1993 when the major work was done, there have only been about 10,000 miles put on the car. This leaves you with zero issues and nothing but pure driving pleasure.

I took the interior out of the car and found a perfect “Body Broadcast Sheet” under the back seat. Now build sheets are nice, but they only show what was ordered. The body broadcast sheet shows you what the assembly line workers actually put on the car! These are very rare and hard to find, but goes to show you what you can find in an original un-restored survivor. The trunk on the car look like they just sprayed the splatter paint last week and all the spare tire equipment is present and never used! Even the inflator bottle and casing is intact!

The overall condition of this car is phenomenal. It has never seen inclimate weather and was stored in a heated garage since 1978! The car has acquired its fair share of “Patina” over the years, but is outstanding when you consider it is over 41 years old. The interior of the car as you can see in the pictures is unbelievable. No tears or cracks or anything, and still jet black in color. Steering wheel, dash pad, etc. are in like new condition. The paint of the car is also excellent, but has acquired rock chips on the front valance and rocker panel area from being driven. There is one spot on the driver’s side fender that was touched up and a very small ding on one quarter panel and that is it! The vinyl top is in excellent condition also.

Cars can be restored many times over, but they are only original once! This bird has been treated like royalty and has absolutely zero issues. With a completely documented service history and virtually one owner since new, I dare you to find another example anywhere in the country! Don’t let this one get away!!!

Car looks nice, but the auto/column shift is gonna hurt it.

Can't keep'm all, but I wish I could afford to! I think the column shift is just the opposite, how many have you seen with that combination? :usa2:

I swear I saw this car a couple years ago while I was on my way to Eagle River Wi.

It was parked near a service station that has an old antique helicopter in the front yard. on RT.45 .

Wow, you are correct! This car was kept in Three Lakes since the late 70's alright! Very cool that you recognized it. I am down in the Milwaukee area where it is currently stored in my garage. It has been part of family summers for many many years!!!!

Cool ! I thought that was it , I stopped and looked at it while it was parked at a station in Three Lakes (Rt.32 & Hwy X) I remember the column shifter & thinking how rare is that. :)

Remember rare and desirable are two different things.
If I were to get a F-body Firebird, I would want preferable a 4spd. If not defianately auto floor shift, with or without console.

Can someone please give me the definition of what a " SURVIVOR " actually is. I'm sure that this is a nice car,but the Motor and Trans have been rebuilt . WHY ? That was not discribed in detail as is the rest of the car was.Also how many mile's are on the car ? I'm sorry for being so forward,but I have always been told that a Survivor car was one that retained most of it's original equipment from the factory such as paint,interior,and drive train.If someone else has a better definition I'm all ears..... JMO

Nice Firebird, they are getting harder to find in this condition. You wouldnt have the Dealer Name Plate off the car by chance? Picture would be great if you do and not to much trouble.

Having been born and raised in MD, my family bought a few cars from Standard Pontiac over the years. Our Drs office was nearby, just down the street off US1 so chances are I passed this car on the lot while going to or from Drs office. My Dad and I would often go down to the lot to look around if waiting on a famiily member at the Drs office to finish.

My Dad, a US Govnt employee was at AU in DC at the same time frame, taking classes for upcoming assignments, and as a Pontiac owner and a big fan might have seen the car in his travels.

Perhaps a "stretch" of the imagination, but its a small world sometimes.

I think you're on the right track.

I my mind "survivor" constitutes original paint, interior, numbers matching (ie "born with") driveline. I had never considered that a rebuild was not ok...

Incidently, the engine and trans in my car have been rebuilt several times, by virtue of the fact that it was a racer it's whole life.

Numbers Matching
 

Not that I doubted it, but while changing the oil yesterday, I verified all the numbers on the car. Motor YT 145119/Trans PY 68 2074 with VINS in the correct places. I verified the Carb, Intake, Heads, Choke, along with date codes. The distributer is almost impossible to see and the alternator is a rebuilt core unit that looks next to new!

The car meets "Survivor" status in my eyes. I know there are a lot of different views on the subject, but it retains "EVERY FACTORY PART" that it left the line with, retains most of it's original paint and still has the complete factory originally installed interior. The car has 132,000 miles on it and the motor and trans were pulled due to sitting for an extended period of time without being started. Even the factory boring 14" full size hubcaps still remain on the car. One would think that would be the first thing to go, but they too traveled the countryside under the car! I drove the car for two hours last night, enjoying a perfect "Sunday Cruise"!!:usa2:

What a find. My first new car was a 67 (Maroon with White/Parchment interior) 400 TH FireBird. Loved that car, but was too young to appreciate it. You are are a lucky man!

After searching the rear axle, I finally found the code stamped just behind the brake line! Code XB for an open carrier and a 2:56 highway gear. The original owner said he got over 20mpg while traveling on the highway, now I believe him. Also attached is a picture of the original owners manual, service manual, etc.:usa2:

Well, finally got the car up on the rack today. Car is unbelievably clean underneath. The inside of the rails look like new, and there is zero rust on the pans! See for yourself. :usa2:

Car is sold for full asking price this morning and will be headed down to Texas shortly! Ebay wouldn't let me end my auction early because it was too late in the auction. Looks like I am now Poncholess for a while..................:usa2:
