CV-1 Turbo track outing today!
Ok so here it is.
Went to track for 2 reasons. 1. test and tune 2. Get licenced Was able to make 4 runs before track was shut down for rain delay. First run was to the 330 mark and shut down( to license) Second 1/2 track 2 3/4 track runs as follows 1st-11.0 at141mph Ran a 10.0 at 135 mph Then lined up to get out of the tens, making the two 9 second and below license runs... and then the rain hit. Damn it! Oh yeah that was only on 4.5 pounds of boost!! The car hooked pretty well, as I was both on the foot brake and t brake. I need another day to get the carb and electronics dialed in the way it needs to be. This set up has more than enough power to set it deeep into the 8's for sure. I am trying to get some of the videos posted up. Stay tuned. I am truly impressed and happy with the performance of the car today. When that turbo kicks in it's like a 300 pound weight pushing you into the seat. G forces are addictive. Turbo, turbo, turbo!!! :D |
Congrats....sounds like your making serious power...keep us posted...Gene
|
Hope you can get the rest of your runs in soon. Wonder what 10 psi is going to be like. Thats going to be a fun ride dont forget toilet paper!
|
What were your 60' and 330 incrementals on the 10.00 134 run?
Is this a Cal trac car? Good thing you have alot to feed the power/speed addiction for awhile! |
60ft--1.681
330-- 4.340 1/8-- 6.463 @ 114.50 mph 1000ft 8.406 1/4-- 10.0 135 mph Let me know what that all means. lol |
Great job but you have along way to go before you will ever see low 8's.Not saying it's not possible but 1,400 hp to the wheels is what you need at that weight. Trust me it's not easy.Good Luck I will be cheering you on.
|
Interesting increments, last weekend I was running a 150 shot, 461 e head, 3600 lb
60 1.525 330 4.189 1/8 6.443 109.23 MPH 1000 8.412 1/4 10.086 133.90 MPH Looks like your setup was pulling harder for sure! |

10.20 @ 141 Killer set up BTW! You're making me wish I followed through with my turbo project. :( |

Oh I agree totally. There is enough Hp to handle it with the boost turned up. But that is along way from today. Just fun getting back on the track. Remember that I lifted and coasted through way before the end of the traps. |

sure it felt great to finally make some passes... definately is going to run really strong. now turn that boost up would you!!!!!

Had fun today Rob. Good to see you making passes in that beast for a change instead of ripping it apart and rebuilding it! Sorry I had to bail early. As it turns out, I could have stayed longer and seen the real passes. My daughter's friggin flight was delayed an hour and she didn't end up showing up till almost 7 PM instead of 5! Grrrrrrrr. It was good to be at the track and smell some burnt rubber and c16. Hopefully, next time we can both be laying down 9 second passes or better...
|
Here is an I pHone video of the 10 run.
Notice how easy I launched it. Listen to the turbo "whistle". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmlrubLOYX8 |

You're making some serious power. Good luck!!
What does the cage consist of? |
She is cranking..nice real nice.

Weld in sub frames. |
get the 60' down to the 1.40's and you should be in the 8's no problem.
|
Those numbers at just FOUR lbs boost should clue you in on the potential. IMO there is more than enough under hood to go well below 9's ON pump gas. Actually glad he plans to turn it up a bit at a time. Good plan.
There should be at LEAST 1600 hp at 15 psi on a conservative tune if the turbo can supply enough air. A whole bunch more if intercooled. Yeah he's going to have his work cut out to get that power to the pavement. |

Rob, here are a couple of shots I took with the digital camera....
|
Thanks Paul for getting my best "side".
|
Yes - one Kick-Butt T/A -Pontiac power !!!! .
|
Congrats Doc!
That's awesome for first outing at this boost level. You have potential to go easy 8's with your combo at some nice conservative boost levels and even on pump gas. How did the tune feel like? What a/f readings did you get through the run? Sounds and looks great from the video, looks like you had a rich mixture in it, smart move. Kris |
better send in the time slip -- or it dont count BWAAAAAAAAAA - good job are you running a boost controller ??
|
Ran it rich and then started jetting it. Went from 11.5 through 13.0.
cgeise- Running an AMS-1000. Had it programmed to run off the gate only during the license runs. |

Mark,
Watched that video in your sig again. Love the way your car launches! Music is perfect for it as well. Rich is always better I agree. |

What are you thinking for suspension changes with the mini tub?
Cal Tracs 4 link Ladder bar |
I think there tons of power there to run 8's but is the car up to the task.I mean safety wise..cars that heavy need a special cage I think its 25.3 tag.A bonsai run into 8's would be great for bragging rights but not very practical. Then there stopping all that weight at 160 mph plus..just something to think about.

How heavy is this car? I've seen lots of 2nd gens deep in the 8's and in the 7's as well. More tire would be nice, but setup properly a small tire caltrac car can put down some serious hp with a drag radial... Lots of guys doing it in the 7's and 8's - some faster yet! Best of luck with it!

Got me seriously thinking about a turbo doc...

My brothers BBC 70 Camaro with 310cc conventional heads and a plate ran 8.7 last fall on radials and caltracs at just shy of 3600lbs - Bankbooks turbo motor makes his hp production look like childs play. It's really not that hard or expensive to get the small tire radial cars to hook - it's just attention to detail like anything else. Just pay attention to what's already been done by many, many others. Another friend has run his Nova in the 8's on a fogger and this year on a couple small 70ish mm turbos - again on radials at about 3700lbs. Then there's Jesse Nelson who I watched go 8.6 this fall again with turbo and radials in a Chevelle that I believe is pushing 4000lbs - on and off the throttle to get the front end back down on E85 no intercooler. Then of course there was the class winner who went 7.68 @ 188mph with a couple 78's I believe in a 3380lb fox body on ethanol - again on radials... Look inside the car and apart from the cage work it looks like a Mustang. Keep in mind the class requires all lights, signals, etc, a 20-30min cruise, mufflers and no wheelie bars. These are just guys in my podunk little corner of the country who get to race about 4 months a year... lol. A couple a bucks, attention to details available from others experience, and some track time, and Bankbook should be haulin' with that rig. No reason not to see that 2nd gen deep in the 8's IMHO - even if it's 4000lbs.
|
It's not that easy I walk the pits at the NMCA world finals cars that ran that fast all the time were big money rides. I looked inside these cars under them they had bars running every where not just a cage but a purpose built race car with a Mustang body on it or a Chevelle body on it.Some still had factory frame rails but a race car.Anyway I wish him all the best I hope he does not get hurt. You have a bad azz ride yourself race safe.
|
Congrats Doc!! As others have said with traction you will have some killer timeslips! What did you run for timing?
|
Whoa ! Awesome times for just getting going with that thing,
Even more impressive doing it with BF Goodrich drag radials. I know Pdude put down some good numbers running those tires but IMO M/T and Hoosiers are a better drag radial tire , might help the 60ft with some better rubber ? |
Really some great conversation guys and I appreciate all of it. Polars right concerned about my safety and all, look how nice his car hooks in those vids, makes it look easy.
Believe me there is enough power in the combination to go the 8.50 the car is certified for, and a whole lot more. I would really like to hear suggestions on the rear suspension as I really need to get it right. I too have seen guys in the seven with second gens running cal track set ups, ladder bars and 4 link. My preference is towards a caltrac because I really do not want to cut it up. But, to stay above ground and out of the ER I gladly will. Timing wise she is locked at 28 taking out a degree per poumd of boost. Nice and safe running C-16 until it is dialed in properly and then I will install the methanol injection. The rear is a Dana 60 with 3.53 ratio. Th etires are 315's and so far seem to be gripping real well. But then again I wasnt launching that hard with any real boost. Paul, when you are ready to go turbo, I will bring the mig and some steel and we will get a set of headers going! You know what the great thing is...with the turbo you can enjoy the car every day. Change the boost you are running and go faster or slower that day at the track. Now the car is a challenge to yourself to race, and more fun I think. |
Doc,
Congrats on getting thge car out and having a safe outing. You are doing the right thing byworking your way into it. I didn't have the blower on my car when I first brought the car out. His car will go mid to low 8's easily! For those that are doubtful remember he has a 106mm turbo! Good luck Doc, be safe, and make us boosted boyz proud! BTW, the offer still stands to drive that beast if you want me too!:D |
Calvert split mono springs in the rear, with the drag race cal-tracs. And put a good shock, like a Strange or Affco double adjustable in the rear. Do not even bother with a single adjustable.
You might need to invest in their pinion angle shims also. Make sure the front has 4-6" of suspension travel in it, with a good spring in the front. Something with some stored energy so it helps pick the front end up. You don't wanna have a dead spring in the front because the car will never weight transfer. With that engine/gearing combo it should go 8.80's easily, and 60' in the 1.4 or quicker range. I can't wait to get my new turbo combo done and come mix it up with you guys. Are you and bad69bird and some of the other turbo guys going to the Pontiac Nat's next year? |
Agree on safety - should be in compliance with the rules and it's a good idea to go above and beyond. I've got a 7.5 cage in my 67 and I've only been 8.6 with it. I wear a 15 layer suit too, when I've never been asked for more than a 5. I don't think I'd want to go faster than 9's in a small tire car without a funny car cage over my head...
A 7.5 cage can be built into a 2nd gen - you don't have to buy/fab a chassis and drop the body on. I'm not saying it wouldn't be easier, just that it can be done if you have the drive and will to do it. Don't fab a thing though without buying a copy of the SFI spec book and reading it. With lots of motor comes the need to pay at least equal attention to the chassis - or just be happy running de-tuned:) If you're not opposed to a back half a 4 link, 33x18.5 tires and wheelie bars would be the quickest and easiest way to solve traction issues. If you want to do the small tire deal though rest assured it can be done. Ire65GTO makes some good points in that regard. I'd second them and further reinforce the 4-6" of travel and push hard to be on high end of that. Make sure everything moves freely, get any forward rake out of the car. Calvert also sells a shock setup that is inexpensive and we've had good success with. And at your power level plain and simple you're gonna need a boost controller. You should be able to get the car to take 800-900hp on the hit and from there ramp it in depending on various track conditions. Good luck with it and have fun!! |
