Just got these pictures from a Guy on the H.A.M.B. board. He took these at Bonneville.

Blown Tempest 4 cyl in what he called a flat fenderd "Jeep"

I see a Vertex magneto, 4-71 Blower, looks like a Hilborn 2 port injector, & cant tell if that is an Edelbrock or Kaufman head. Has slanted plugs & a nice finned valve cover. Nice set of zoomies!

Bonneville has some of the best cars. They tend to think out of the box a lot more.

That's sure true, although I'd have worded it "top speed racing...". The same sort of ingenuity/inventiveness is evident whether the site be Bonneville, El Mirage, Maxton, or Loring. [Excuse me for getting "picky" about the jargon used- as I prepare to immerse myself and my hemi in this sport]

Yes this is Roger and Marlene Manson from Canada. Their little 4/71 blown 4 banger Pontiac ran 189.34 at Bonneville Speed Week 2010. In drag trim this thing runs mid 9s about 145 mph. These are just a few photos that I have. Their goal was to run 200 mph. They are in process of making a few mods, and will go 200 plus I'm sure. This is my first post here at Perfomance Years and won't be the last. I own a 62 Le Mans that will soon have half of a Weiand Drag Star manifold on it, and a header. Plus a few other goodies.

SO COOL!!!! Thanks Rusty & Drag Star!!! I thought by the Guy's discription, it was the Manson car out of Canada but couldnt tell from the pics. Thanks for the other pics. I love to see anything that shows different uses for our little 4 cyls!!!

Sorry for the poor picture quality. I went on local speed shop tour with car club, Twin City Idlers. No history on this interesting piece, other than its out of Ohio? The owner plans to insall into a dragmaster chassis for future display?

Is that blower manifold from the M/T catalog?

Jack, just about everything on that motor screams M/T!!! Intake, valley cover with breathers, water fill on the back of the head, water venting pet cock on the front of the intake. That motor has a LOT of run time on it. Look at the buildup of dirt on the bottom of the blower, on the lower part of the timing cover, on the inside of the lower crank pulley. Shure would like some more info/history on this motor!!!! I like the old style barn door injector & the tach driven off of the front of the crank. Vertex magneto, remote oil filter on the right front & looks like a water pump or alternator was driven off of the blower pully also. Also like the tin cans covering the ends of the Zoomie!!

DragStarLeMans, Can ya help us out here?????? This looks like a lost piece of M/T history. Possibly out of one of his dragsters??

I would give you more info if I had it. The current owner of this stated he bought it when racing in Ohio, other than that nothing? We did have nearly 70 people at his shop that day? I plan to ask him plenty of questions about it when we cross paths again. Here are a few more pictures from that shop tour.

Drag Star Le Mans, I bought the stuff back in the 70's I have no idea anymore. I had the holes modified to use on a 65 and up head. I used it on two motors and now use a sheetmetal one that sit's on top like a V8 Thanks Rusty

WOW!!! I have a woodie now!!! Look at all the breathers, hats, scoops & port injectors!!! Have been looking for a 2 port hilborn or enough parts & pieces to put one together. I have one but its damaged beyond repair. Also have been looking for one of the M/T manifolds as pictured so I can lay a blower on its side under the hood. All that I have found have been beyond my bank account!! Just WOW!!

I went on another car club shop tour today, look at this gem! This is at Jim Greens shop in Monroe Washington. His shop tour was real cool, great guy with lots of good storys. He loves the big old Ford cammer engines. Jim is also loves Pontiacs, he owned 19 (yes nineteen) 67 Pontiacs at one point.

I have a little more info on the bitchin blown 4 with all the M/T parts. It is located in Tacoma, WA at Bucky Austins shop. www.Buckyaustinracing.com look through here real good to see some cool old rails, and speed parts.
The story I got from Jim Green was that the engine was bought out of a storage, and donated to Bucky to add to his museum. He has stuff that just makes you drool. Bucky plans to restore a dragmaster chassis, and install the 4 banger. Most of his cars are in running condition and used at various cackle-fests. I hope he gets this little thing running so we all can hear this piece of history run. It is not known at this point if there is any relationship to Mickey Thompson and the engine. I am going to try to contact Bucky and get him to display the engine and chassis at the GTOAA in Portland. This will be a long shot, but maybe possible???

Those angled spark plugs in the 4cyl head in the 4th pic? There was a discussion before about one of the M/T v-8's with angled plugs.

In this day and age, how do I obtain trumpet-shaped zoomie pipes? Must I dust off my metal-spinning skills (?) and roll-my-own? If anybody spots any for sale, give me a shout. Thanks.

I'm heading back to the Salt Flats for Speedweek 2011. Going to watch the Rapid Fire Blown Tempest make a run for 200-MPH. I'll let you know how things went next week.

Do you guy know that Mickey ran stock looking 62 Tempest 4 door sedan with a GMC supercharger around So. Cal. for fun in the 62 and 63! Mickey even sold one (a 2-door coupe), don't know what happen to the car. Last time I saw it was at Oscar's DriveInn on Garden Grove Blvd in late 64 trying to find someone to race him. No takers. I think I have the old "car life" rosd test somewhere.

Gee, after looking at all those 4 bangers and the power there making I'am thinking of maybe junking the LS2 out of my 63 and putting the 4 back in it. NOT!:usa2:

2011 speed week update
 

The best run was 192-mph, with a cast iron 96 R/A II head. Tuned for next run and burned a valve as a result of one loose nozzle on injector. Swapped to E-head and went 191-mph. Six runs were made total I believe, with slowest being 187? Sorry for the shabbie info but my brain is fried from the salty sun. This is the only picture I have of the Rapid Fire. If you have never been to Bonneville, you better go!

What SCTA category/class does it fall into?

I would think with a bit more body covering some of that thing it'd be over 200 MPH. Must be lots of drag at speed. It is very cool though! Interesting that it ran slower with the e-head. Do you know how big the motor is?

Roger is running for time only because the class he falls into has a record of 300+mph.
I think either open wheel roadster, or open wheel streemliner class. Its .060 over which puts at 200ci. It may need more work aerodynamically, but its not my car to modify. Remember this started life as a full bodied Jeep running sand drags, evolved into a 9 second drag car, and part time salt flat racer.

First I need to correct a few mistakes from my previous post. The record for the car is 260mph, in open wheel streamliner. Which Rogers car is not by any means a streamliner.
The engine is .060 over and the crank is off set ground. So I don't know the total cubes. He invested seveal thousands dollars in the car over this last winter. New Hampton blower, old weiand unit was not wear near 100%, yes power loss! There were issues with the magneto so that got freshened. He rear was hard mounted in the car before, its now 4-linked with ajustable coil overs. He ran the catr at Mission Raceway in the spring to keep his comp. licsense. it ran 9.16 and back that up with a 9.06. Best mph to date I can't rememeber 145? Any way he said he had to peddle the car on both passes, not used to the 4-link set up. He is sure it will go 200mph this year at Bonneville this year. One of the crew member bought a go-pro camera so there should be some video coming soon. I can't go due to job change. Stay posted!

I guess you mean record for the class. I'll also venture a guess that the car runs as a "lakester" in F/BFL (since that record is two-sixty-something; I think 262). Lakesters (open wheel) and streamliners comprise the Special-Construction division of landspeed racing- vehicles not derived from any manufactured car, truck, etc. Class 'F' engines are up to 184 c.i., so I assume that the offset grinding of crank throws was to reduce the stroke to something less than 3.75".
These numbers are all familiar to me, since I'll be building a blown-alky 'F' engine for my lakester (4-cyl. DOHC aluminum hemi Pontiac).

Jack I should put a ? mark after most of my comments. Roger runs thru the info so fast I have a hard time retaining all of it. I do know he running for time only because the record for the class he would fit is out of reach, maybe? He is over 200 inches now!
I will get all the hard facts on his combo when they get back from Bonneville and update then. Until then I will do my best to keep everybody posted on his speeds.

Marlene sent me a short e-mail. Roger ran 195 first time out, then had
blower belt problems. Was never able to make another go at 200. I got
these photos off the HAMB. Plan to talk with Roger this weekend for a
full update, and hope to get some video.

Roger closed up the engine on his car. Looks real good, should get thru the air better at speed. Pictures aren't the best took them with my phone.

Bump for Bonneville. The Mansons are on their way. I will be leaving after work Thursday night. Should be on the salt by noon Friday.

I've met Roger and Marlene at Mission Raceway in British Columbia when they were driving the "Rapid Fire" jeep with the blown 4-cylinder. Whatta car !

The thing sounds amazing & is loud as hell :eek: Louder than a lot of V8 cars with open exhaust

I think he ran a high 8-second quarter during the "Old Tyme Drags" event
Low 9's were routine

They're sure nice people too and are passionate about going FAST with good old Pontiac power

The Good Bad and Ugly,

Good is it was a great time out there with Roger, Marlene and crew.

Bad was breaking a blower stud and lifting the blower (back fire) on first pass.

Ugly was windowing the block on 3rd run. I will post the pictures this weekend.

Pictures before and after first run. Everything checked out good after broken blower stud.

Second run ended badly before the second mile. This block will make a great coffee table.
