Would you Buy Water Pump and Plates if made to original Specs
 

Trying something here folks,

In an effort to get numbers to present to Cardone & Ames relevant to them producing a water pump and back-plates to match that conform to OEM specs;

I voted both, but since I own a 70 it might not matter. Although I wish they would produce all the stuff to oem specs.

Would that be a new impeller or a new housing casting and impeller. From what I gathered earlier the issue was with the impeller being cut down. A whole new casting for the waterpump housing seems like a very large project.

What they want to do is to put out pumps with a proper impeller which would have a superseded number. But, there needs to be plates that fit it also.

So, what's the bottom line on which pump we're talking about. Is it the 8 bolt pump only or are they looking at the 11 bolt also?

They are looking at doing both Greg.

And that's what I was told at the meeting back in March that Paul and I had with Cardone.

Will cardone reman your original water pump so you can keep your part number and date codes, etc? If not, does anyone have a source for the correct ceramic washer, seals, and bearings to do your own?

Are the housing's iron or aluminum?

Housings for the pumps Cardone will be putting out are iron. They'll more than likely be rebuilt pumps.... originals and non original copies of the originals. Impellers will be cast iron too. I saw their cast aluminum impellers and they were nothing I'd want on my engine. Sorry, but they were not as good as the cast iron impellers we've been using.

Its not that hard to do. I actually know of one source for the bearing but was wondering if there are others. The pieces I haven't looked for yet are the seal and ceramic washer. I had a friend press an older rebuilt pump apart and found it had some inferior pieces in it. We rebuilt it with an NOS GM kit (not many of those around anymore). I wonder what Cardone uses for these parts (or any of those guys in Hemmings for that matter) and/or if original style seals and washers are available anywhere. IMO, a quality rebuilt pump is not only about the cast impeller.

When we did mine, we followed the instructions in the kit. When done, the divider plate (original) had the perfect clearance from the impeller without requiring any work.
