1979 4spd Formula For Sale - 43,000 Original Miles!

5 Attachment(s)
Unfortunately I can't keep them all and I had already committed to another car before this one got delivered....so it's for sale.

1979 W50 Special Appearance Package, WS6 Special Performance Package, 4spd Formula Firebird with 43,337 miles on it currently (subject to change ;)), L37 4.9 Litre, 4bbl engine, Limited Slip Differential, 4-Wheel Disc Brakes, Custom Color Keyed Seatbelts, Rear Defroster, IP Tachometer & Gauges, Soft Ray Glass - All Windows, Additional Acoustical Insulation, Lamp Group, Front & Rear Floor Mats, Roof Drip Molding, Power Antenna, Power Door Locks, Radio Accommodation Package (Has Dealer Installed Pioneer 8-Track), Tilt Steering Wheel, Controlled Cycle Windshield Wipers, Custom Velour Interior Trim in Camel Tan Hobnail with Lombard Bolsters.

Other than the tires, I don't believe this car has had anything changed since new. The interior is immaculate, everything works as it should including the lights & key buzzer. The car has NEVER been smoked in and the dash, headliner, rear package tray, glass, instrument panel, carpet, console, seats & door panels are all in EXCELLENT condition. The exhaust is original including the catalytic converter and transverse mounted muffler. The floors are rust free as is every other panel on the car. The paint is 100% GM Original - there are factory defects in the paint, including dirt, hairs, drips/runs/pools & some metal flake droops. Space saver spare, inflator, jack & instructions are all in the trunk & show no signs of ever being used. There is also an additional matching single rim included should you choose to have a full size spare.

Defects: It leaks a little oil - it wouldn't be a Pontiac if it didn't! ;) There are a few small chips in the paint if you walk around the car as well as a couple very minor door dings in the front fender - to be expected. On the interior the front seat backs have a couple of scratches and there is some minor discoloration in the two rear side panels - I would replace them to make it perfect. The front & rear windshield trim has lost it's original black paint and now has a brushed look to it except for the two rear side pieces which somehow retained their paint. This was a common problem back in the day - you can choose to refinish them or strip the two remaining pieces to match the roof drip moldings.

The car is an absolute blast to drive, very torquey, and will burn 1st, spin 2nd & grab third without much effort. It handles great, and is super comfortable inside with all temp/climate controls working properly (had the heat on with both windows down this morning @ 6:30 on the highway). ;) It drives great in the heat (had it out on CT's record breaking 103 degree day), and starts every time you turn the key - it also has a nice little shake when idling at stop lights. :D

I have a clear Idaho title from the 2nd owner along with a notarized open bill of sale. I also have the warranty book from the first owner who took delivery with 4 miles on the car and they both lived in the same town it was sold new in.

Price is $12,900 which is reflective of the issues which you may/may not choose to address and my choice to sell the car quickly. The cars condition and patina (I hate that word) could not be duplicated at anything close to that price. I will be trailering the car out to Norwalk and may race it just for fun. Bring cash or arrange a wire transfer ahead of time & drive it home!

Wow! Someone took impeccable car of that car. Very rare find in that condition.

You mentioning how much power it has reminded me, somewhere there's a thread talking about the 4.9 cars getting different gear ratios in the tranny that were real performance oriented.

Cool car Boss, good luck with the sale.

bobzdar 08-01-2011 12:45 PM

2.88 1st gear 1.75 2nd I think.

The Boss 08-01-2011 06:20 PM

The 4spd/301 combo got the Borg Warner Super T-10 with a 3:44 1st gear and the same combo with the WS6 & no A/C got the 3:08 rear - it pulls pretty good. :D

Production on 1979 4spd/301 Formulas was 1590 with solid roof & 1530 with T-Tops - fairly low considering over 211,000 Firebirds were produced in 1979. ;)

ponchjoe 08-02-2011 11:43 AM

Nice piece Boss, will have to check it out this weekend.

J GLASGO 08-02-2011 05:46 PM

Nice car Chris. If i did not have my TA,I would be on that.4-Speed with no ac,and custom interior,ws-6,all original, what a great car,and probably a blast to drive.Cant wait to see it!

The Boss 08-02-2011 10:10 PM

Thanks Joe & John. John, I need to give you a call tomorrow about picking up the hood - I'm also going to be bringing back the one for Art too.

Wick 08-02-2011 10:25 PM

This car reminds me of the 7K mile '79 TA I bought from Mr Glasgo but with fewer options. I miss that car and would like to have yours Chris.......take original sticker for it? :D

bobzdar 08-02-2011 10:44 PM

If you end up running it, let us know how it does. I'm curious, maybe high 15's? Probably quicker than a loaded up 403 t/a auto of the same year.

The Boss 08-03-2011 07:33 AM

Thanks guys, I think I'll run it - going to rubber band my Droid to the rear view and take a video too! ;)

Chris - as nice as that offer is, I've got more in it. :D

Bob Rutledge 08-09-2011 11:56 AM

Beautiful ride. How did she do at Norwalk, and did she sell?

The Boss 08-09-2011 02:26 PM

Had a blistering first run of 17.22 backed up by an equally fast 17.25.....painfully slow.

There was a traction problem in both 1st & 2nd - the video will back me up.

It has not sold yet, probably wait a few more days then throw it on e-bay.

Did a little photo shoot out in Norwalk with that ever elusive SD/4spd Formula. ;)

Yeah ok , take that story to Trans am country ,they'll love it there

Wick 08-09-2011 03:59 PM

Is that a 3.23 gear in the rear?

goatmanmitch 08-09-2011 05:49 PM

You would've whooped on that Futureliner! Nice vid, Chris.

The Boss 08-09-2011 06:00 PM

3:08 in the rear I believe.

Norwood 08-09-2011 06:42 PM

Boss, Nice car for sure, I would love it but it would need about 150 more cubes

Ram4king 08-09-2011 10:05 PM

I saw it in person and its even nicer than it looks here.

lumarkhood 08-09-2011 11:14 PM

Great comments here guys! We TAC'ers would love the story of the blistering 17 sec run. :)

Very clean car. Best of luck with your sale.

bobzdar 08-10-2011 09:56 AM

What was the mph?

The Boss 08-10-2011 10:14 AM

77.24 on the first run, 76.85 on the second.

.533 & .390 R/T

drk1313 08-10-2011 02:17 PM

The blue 77/78 in the right lane ran a 12.12? He came out like he was shot from a cannon!

The Boss 08-10-2011 10:19 PM

He was fast, the 73 Formula in front of me was turning similar times to mine.

1972455HO 08-11-2011 01:35 PM

Beautiful car! Too bad it doesn't have A/C. :(

rad400 08-11-2011 03:42 PM

Boss don't feel to bad about the times my old 80 ran an 18.3 @77

The Boss 08-11-2011 06:38 PM

I could have run my index all day long and left with some money.....decided to drink instead. :D

Talk about the lowballers ! :p lol
My 79 TA 4spd 6.6 WS6 hardtop was 2 options shy of fully loaded - with 2 window stickers. Still was only around 10k and change.

What was sticker price for this one ?

Great looking groovy car Boss. Love them 79 4spd WS6 cars !
Every 79 i've dealt with had buildsheet in rear seat springs or under rear seat - if you wanna grab it out quick and easy to get axle ratio.

70ram4 08-15-2011 01:02 AM

Nice car Chris. Time capsule

The Boss 08-15-2011 08:36 AM

Thanks guys.

MSRP of $8,190.55 & I'm going to have to go out & pop those seats later today now that it's likely to be under them. :D

The Boss 08-15-2011 02:42 PM

Not there, but I did find a quarter - thanks! :D

Where next?

David Jones 08-15-2011 03:40 PM

My GTO's sheet was on top of the gas tank.

74 SD455 Formula 08-15-2011 04:07 PM

try behind the back seat. thats where i found mine, when i had a 79 formula.

Baron Von Zeppelin 08-16-2011 01:43 AM

I'm flabbergasted it wasn't in back seat vicinities.
Sorry about that Boss.
You did take the upper cushion out too right ?

One of the goofiest was a 79 403 TA Auto A/C ... 2.41 axle.

The Boss 08-16-2011 07:29 AM

No, I didn't pull the seat back, may try that today if it stops raining long enough!

Baron Von Zeppelin 08-16-2011 12:31 PM

Thats where its gonna be then.
From memory ... .. . thats where i got most of them.
The upper cushion.

BINGO & Bonus!!!

Pulled it a few minutes ago, not only was it where you said (or most of it) but there was also a piece of plastic under the sound deadener material that when I pulled it out contained an NOS glove box cylinder!!!

3:08 Rear Gear

tripower 08-16-2011 04:25 PM

Cool find! Wonder why they tossed that cylinder back there????

Probably just left laying around inside and the line worker said "f-it"...

The Boss 08-16-2011 08:58 PM

That's my guess - in the parts drawer now! :D

The Boss 08-16-2011 10:08 PM

On e-bay now - no reserve & priced to sell - go get it!

Baron Von Zeppelin 08-16-2011 11:31 PM

Glad you found that buildsheet Boss. Congrats !

One of my ex GF's - her first car was a 79 Bird 301 4bbl Auto same color as this Formy.
She outran my room-mates 81 TA Turbo/Recaro Pace Car with it. lol
He was hurting !

ponchjoe 08-17-2011 09:03 PM

Does that mean it will need a clutch? :)
Good to meet you at the Nats - GLWS, neat car

The Boss 08-18-2011 07:36 AM

No, he did pretty well - stalled it a couple of times & did his first burnout too. ;)

Good meeting you too Joe.
