PONTIAC LIGHTER CASCO vs ROCHESTER
 

Hi everyone, I need your help. We found a bunch of new Casco lighter assemblies and we need to know what year car goes with what type of insert. Different Pontiac plants used different lighter inserts for the different models. Please take a look at the picture and then take a look at your insert in your dash. I'm not concerned as much with the knob as the filiment...the knob will unscrew.Type A is a Rochester insert and Type B is the Casco. Which one do you have Type A or Type B & what year/make/model?

I don't recall ANY of the several dozen Pontiacs I've owned having the Casco style lighter.

I've owned '69-'72 A-bodies and '72-'75 'birds.

The 65 GP I just parted had a *factory* casco (NJ built car) every other 65 I've had has had a rochester

Ive never seen type B in a pontiac..i snatch every lighter i find in every yard i go to...

ive seen a couple in 64 impalas now that i think about it..

Type A 1966 Pontiac Lemans

In 1961, full size Pontiacs built in Kansas City used a Casco lighter while other plants used a Rochester (at least most of them, I can't be 100% sure about all plants), but the one they used back then had a different head than the one in your photo.

All type A, 64 GTO, 66 LeMans, 67 GTO, 68 GTO.

All of my '65 big cars, and my '67 GTO's used Type A.

Original Rochester lighter in my 66 GTO.... never used. Ashtray never used either. Not even by me. :D

I have a Casco in my Pontiac, MI built 65 GTO, that unfortunately now has an aftermarket replacement element in it.
Shaker 455 unfortunately lost the original I had when he got overzealous with his wideband meter plugging it in.
I think he was still frazzled from trying to learn to shift the vertical gate:)

The Rochester lighter assembly in my Kansas City 65 GTO has it's original 1965 element, but it will not fit my MI car- the Casco is smaller in element diameter (or vice versa).
I'm interested in purchasing either one if you have assemblies with the element included.

I would like to convert all my cars over to casco, elements are easier to get and it seems like the lighter plug accys like cell phone chargers and gps stuff were designed for casco sockets. The can be intermittent in the rochester ones.

I've had several 67 & 68 Lemans dash faceplates I've pulled out of yards that had Casco elements. I'm not sure if it's by the area where the plant was or what they had that day making the cars...

My 69 GTO has the "B" lighter. I had scrounged up an "A" lighter somewhere and figured it would fit because the knob looked the same but I was wrong. You can screw the knob off but the element won't fit in the hole.

I've got the type A in my 62 GP. I guess that's the Rochester. It looks fine, but doesn't work for some reason. All new wiring to boot.

Amazing this got sticky in the Lobby.. must be a 69 GTO is involved LOL

Found this CASCO tag this weekend while sorting thru some stuff in the basement. I wonder if they are reproduced. Be nice to attach to the lighter while at car shows.

Have you tried checking to see if there is current to it.. the outer shell is negative as its ground to the dash frame, and the centre is positive.. should have power all the time. Funny the lighter nowadays is to charge up an ipod or something like that and not a smoke :>)

I have a 1969 GTO built February 69 in Fremont CA with a type B Casco lighter. The knob is smaller, though, and it has the light which clips onto the outer case. Do you sell the Casco lighter by itself with the larger knob?

I've never seen a casco style in an F body. Although I changed mine over to casco. I put the original knob from my Rochester onto the casco element with casco socket. Pretty much looks original but I don't have to worry about a melt down anymore.

My 65 Lemans has a type B but the knob does not match the other knobs which all look like the Type A.
I recently purchased a new type A to match the knobs but its too large to fit in the socket????????
The type B lighter I have works great but looks like crap sinse it dosent match the knob of typr A.--------Hope I didn't confuse you.

When I bought my 69 Firebird (built in early 1970) it didn't have a lighter and I'm in the market for one. Is there anyway to tell which version of lighter I should buy?

1972 B-body Grandville - Rochester type A lighter
 

I can confirm the 1972 B-body Grandville- from either the Pontiac, MI or Fremont, CA plant- have type A Rochester lighter plugs ( 3 of them on the Grandville, 1 in the dash and 2 more- on the sides of the front seat)

I'd like to purchase a couple of the Rochester plugs if anyone has them to sell- 2 of mine have broken into 2 pieces (top/bottom) where the plastic became brittle around the screw threads.

Will R.: What I've been seeing is that most of the cars made have the Rochester type. Both Rochester & Casco will fit in the same hole, so if you do not have any at all, then go with the rochester type.

CASCO lighters in all my PON 68 GTO & LeMans cars of old. Recently re-installed such to power the GPS....

When I was working in the parts department at the Chevy Central Office Service Center in Detroit in the late 70's we found that the parts catalog wasn't helpful in determing the correct replacement lighter element for any model car or truck. We just told the technician to bring us the failed element (either Casco or Rochester) and we'd give them the correct replacement. Didn't matter whether it was a Chevette or a Corvette or something in-between. Even if the technician needed the housing that mounted in the dash or ashtray we asked to see the element to determine the correct housing brand. Have to believe engineering and manufacturing had some rhyme or reason as to which models produced at which assembly plants in each model year used which brand made sense at the time. But you could't tell that by looking at the parts catalog. While that may be how Chevy's were done I have to believe Pontiac, Olds, Buick, GMC and Cadillac worked the same way.
