2002 Firebird Formula SLP 400 actual miles
Here is the background
I have a customer who for some reason during the 1980s and 1990s and 2000 bought several different muscle cars drove thm very little and stashed them in a basic old garage building. The first car I sold for him was his 1987 Grand National that on it had 1,600 miles on it. He has a GMC Thypoon and a 5.0 Mustang notchback still sitting with low miles. I just this week 11-10-11 had him get over to my house his 2002 Firebird Formula SLP car with a mere 400 actual miles on it. Window sticker and SLP sticker still attached to the door glass and the temp Virginia tag is still on the back. Even the caution sticker for the airbag is attached to the dash. In a sealed box is all the accessories from SLP with inventory list on the box lid. Down side is the car has not had great storage. My buddy will post the photos as it sits on my driveway before I clean it up. It is a t top car black leather gut 6-speed. It is not real bad under neath compared to the GN that was parked in 1987. I hope to get a price from the seller shortly. I get a flat fee from the seller for selling his car so I have no reason to play with the asking price. The car is quite rare as I have not checked yet but I know not many formula SLPs were produced. We will not start the car as the buyer would need to drain all the fluids and start from fresh. I don't see any damage from rodents. Its ashame these cars were stored like this. Awhile ago from another source I got a 2004 caddy CTS V car that only had 90 miles on it still had the original gas in the tank that I sold for that owner. My buddy will post the initial photos here shortly. I don't believe it would take much of an investment to carefully detail everything and change all the fluids. The end result is someone will end up with a very low mileage formula slp car. [email protected] As I clean up the car other photos will be posted as will his asking price once I get that info. While this is a strange set of circumstances I have had other cars that I have sold in similar circumstances. |
No offense but that's a crime. The car is covered with mold, even on the inside. What a shame!

Here are the production numbers. It looks like 167 total SLP Formulas, 25 are Red, of those red ones 17 are manual shift.
There were only 901 total formulas for 2002, the 167 is included in that total number. |

Appreciate the production numbers....I agree that sometimes its hard to grasp what some owners do.......and I have seen a lot of weird stuff concerning cars over the years that just is hard to comprehend.
This car being the newest is in the better shape than the others would be. I did sell the GN that shared the same enviroment. Worst cars have been brought back than this. As the production shows this is a fairly rare example. If it was on Craigs list it would simply state needs a little TLC!!!! Humor aside....it is what it is.... [email protected] |

As to the questions...I am bugging the owner for a starting price now....
Just so everyone is clear I work on a straight fee so I have no pressure to jack up the price.....as I do not work that way... as for cleaning it up I am not going to go crazy simply wash it half dozen times and air it out and clean up the interior and stuff I am not going to do a 100 point clena up like my cars are. Will be getting my buddy other photos to post next week. The car really is not that bad all things considered remember it has not been exposed to sunlite since it was new so the paint really is nice and brite... as for the wheels I am not 100% sure they will look like new again but those wheels are around and nothing special. The one neat thing is all the original SLP stuff is still factory sealed in the box in the trunk. [email protected] in the meantime any one wants to throw out an offer I can advise him... |
It's sad that somebody would let a car get in that condition.If he would have pulled the car out of the garage once a month and had a dehumidifier this would have never happened.

Washed the car today the body and paint looks super no flaws at all no stains nothing paint shines like new and is still slippery and smooth. I can't believe how just washing it was enough. Cleaned the interior it looks almost as good as new. Granted it was not stored in the best circumstances but it was not exposed to any sunlite so nothing is faded. I will get my buddy to post photos Monday. The car now looks like a 400 mile car....exception being I don;t believe the wheels will come back to like new. However, that being said those wheels are not something special. The seats look like new again. [email protected] Regardless of what comments have been made it still remains the simple fact it is a very rare example of a Formula Firehawk and could be one of the lowest mileage ones in existance. My commission is a fixed amount whether it sells or not. The box of acceessories from SLIP with the VIN number on the label of the box has never been opened. |

I am not trying to collect offers and I apologize for not stating a price. I am bugging the owner to get me a price he wants. Don't be fooled by the initial photos I posted them to be honest. the car literally looks 100% better now and has no smells whatsover.... I will have Mr AMC post photos Monday and I will post a price sometime on Monday I appreciate everyones patience. here is the scoop the seller checked with a few people that know these cars and has instructed me to price it at $31,900. Will post up to date photos probably tomorrow as my source that does this for me is traveling today and I have no clue on how to do it. [email protected] |
I know these cars very well. My mother has a 99' convert. 1 of 6 and my Dad has a comp t/a. If theengine bay is still rusted you will never get that price. Go to the firhawk.org site they will gide you in the right way.

Concerning the rusty engine you have to read this thread from the start....car has been sitting since end of 2002 in an unheated enviroment....we live in Pennsylvania which contributed to the condition as shown.

Guys, i have pulled one car out of this guys collection a month or so ago. These are truly low mileage vehicles as stated. Its an absolute shame on how he stored them, but they will clean up without disassembly. We have developed a system to remove rust without damaging paint or decals. We have put this to the test to the car i picked up from this collection. take alook at the link of this system working, fyi, i have since re-done this spraying system. this is the "old" set up. This car is still being treated as we speak. We developed it for the "survivor" cars more or less so no disassembly is required. This car is not that bad underneath....and the paint and body is absolutely flawless no fade no stains no scratches no dings. Putting the word here first...... the firehawk is still available however the owner has moved it and brought me the 1990 Mustang notchback 5-speed.....been parked since 1992 in the same building as the firehawl was. Caer is 100% bone stock bone original with the exception at time of purchase he had a pop up sunroof installed. Has documentation of this. Car has what I consider the standard options posi, power windows and locks, lst year I believe for air bag. am/fm cassette. One super rare option it has is the factory Ford engine block heater...Ford sticker is still on it...card about wheel lock still attached to lug wrench also card about wheel lock and card about manual trnasmission is still with the car. Car has no paint work super straight body no dents no dings...miles is either 5,400 or 5,500 not sure which. I am confident the paint will come back as it had no sun exposure. Color is a dark grey with a beige or lite grey cloth interior. Notchbacks were not high dollar Mustangs. I will get my buddy to post a few photos on this thread early next week. The owner is seeking $11,500 or best offer. I think its a realistic price. You seldom ever see unmolested 5-speed manual notchbacks let alone one with so few miles. In the Mustang world everything is available and cheap. There is no sun fade on any of the trim on this car. Doors shut like day one.... It is what it is, as my commission remains the same regardless of price. He may have the window sticker I am not sure. In the glove box unopen is the Ford demo cassette....kinda neat. Back then VIN sticker is on every single panel, helps tell you its original body parts from the factory. Headlites have no yellow or haze would pass for new if I could put them in a Ford box. Tires like new but I am sure have age crack sin the tread. Wheels have some corrsion but are the cheap slotted stock ones. Rust is not bad rear housing and driveshaft rest is pretty nice underneath. Maybe not a dynamite color but that is what it is like a dark grey. [email protected] From another source I found a 1967 Corvette stingray 4-speed that had been parked all original since 1989. As for the tires I know from Buicks people pay crazy money for hard 1987 tires heck back in the day they paid big money for old red lines until repros came out...
I have car on a lift in my building at the house....tires are really nice only noticed some cracking between tread on one tire....others seem ok...I would not drive a performance car on them at high speed but they are original... original battery still in the car.... Car has some great potential...they are fun cars years ago I had 3 of them 2 where 5 speeds....cheap cars in the day... [email protected] |

Just a FYI to everyone who havent read: I'm sure everyone knows but in case someone stumbles on this link online: Old Tires run risk of failure. IIRC, six years is the line when they should be replaced. I have a 05 GTO with low miles and inspection people pointed out some problem areas on mine so I replaced. Date codes on tire sidewall. Owner of these cars just informed me new price on the Formula Firehawk is $22,900 is the new asking price. Another thought would be a packaged deal for Firehawk and notchback Mustang. Again just passing the word. At some point these cars will find a new home other than mine.... [email protected] |
What a shame this amazing car had to endure such an environment... Just a couple thoughts I have on this car... You keep saying the wheels cannot be brought back to new, but they are around so it's not a big deal... I hate to burst your bubble, but Firehawk wheels aren't too common actually, and the only ones I have seen for sale are in similarly rough shape. The guys who realize the rarity of their cars and keep them in good shape want to keep their original wheels. And in order to have the wheels redone you would need to have them replated and all of the shops I have spoken to send them to Cali to get done, having these wheels rechromed would be triple the price of a new set of torque thrusts or more, not to mention the car needs a new set of tires. And when cars sit for that long things tend to dry rot and seals dry out... I wouldn't be surprised if that motor needs a few gaskets to be replaced. Cars do not sit well... While the car is rare and original, it needs more than a bit of TLC, and I don't see why anyone wouldn't be just as happy with one that has a bit more miles but was actually driven and taken care of... And I don't know a single person who would ever even consider buying a car without seeing it start up first.
All things considered, I think you are asking a hefty price, and I am interested to see what it brings. If it was in better shape and stored in a proper environment I would consider it. |

At some price this car will sell look what others bring back from the dead from older relics..... I have sen these wheels for sale at swap meets maybe the center caps are unique. I agree expensive to rechrome. Tires are cracked between the tread. The car is what it is.... I bought the 1,608 mile GN a few months ago from the seller of this car, with Dennis acting as the middle man. Dennis and the the owner are stand up guys who can be trusted. I highly recommend both, as I truly believe any "discrepancy/problem" with a car...would be dealt with a very fair, equitable manner.
The GN was in far worse shape than this car. Massive amounts of surface rust on every unpainted underside area. But, it has cleaned up amazingly well, thanks to Tom Fischer at www.musclecaralley.org. :) Many in the Turbo Buick community were skeptical of the car...it's worth...ease of clean up...etc... Now, they are seeing it differently, and now, I have a 1,608 mile kick-butt GN!! |
I appreciate the kind words....I can only present cars that I am told about its up to the buyer(s) to determine if they want a project like this.
Like I stated earlier I have seen far worse examples restored. I just sold a GN that I was going to dismantle but I had a local customer of ours want it to restore because it had the factory astro roof and wanted a challenge. Pontiac is with this SLP example if the production numbers don't lie only 17 ever existed and its doubtful if any exist still sporting both window stickers on the door glass. As the saying goes....from my prospective and as any sales person can tell you....you only need one buyer with the money..... car is srtil lavailable I did sell 3 of his other barn cars since then a mustang typhoon and riviera..
takes about 20 grand to buy the slp car...body and paint is super still brite and smooth not a single blem in the paint stickers still on the door window... [email protected] |
