Exhaust Sounds

We need a thread of people's rides of how their exhaust sounds and what they have for a setup on the exhaust.. Headers, etc

brut4s 11-16-2011 10:00 PM

X2.. that's a good idea!

ta man 11-17-2011 02:06 AM

I have two videos I could post..I just have to remember my photobucket acct details.

That would be cool!

grandville455 11-18-2011 09:02 AM

Nobody wants a thread where we can hear different exhaust systems on their cars? I think it would be a great thread and help people decide what they want for their cars etc...

ta man 11-19-2011 03:03 AM

Short video crappy sound...462 ,1 3/4 hooker super comps,3 inch PYPES X ,cone reducers into 2 1/2 inch Ultra flows into 2 1/2 Flowmaster mandrel bent tailpipes.Has ran 116.95 with full exhaust...http://s668.photobucket.com/albums/v...exhaust006.mp4Check out the dragstrip video too...same exhaust first time at track with current combo..

grandville455 11-19-2011 12:15 PM

That sounds good! That is pretty quiet! Now thats a start come on guys I know we have more video's of your exhaust.. Don't be shy :D

hopper146 11-19-2011 02:24 PM

Heres a short one of my Firebird...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PU2Uj...&feature=feedu oh wait...do I need pipes hooked up to the headers? haha... OK, have a flowmaster 3" exhaust on it now...I'll have to fire it up and video it, when it stops snowing...-25 right now...lol

The X pipe really made the exhaust quieter especially at full throttle...before when the car had 2 1/2 inch exhaust and same mufflers it was like no exhaust at all at full throttle. On a side note...The ultraflows and larger tailpipes actually were worth almost 3 tenths at the time...this actually go me into the 13's a few years ago one of my first mods in the right direction.

grandville455 11-19-2011 03:40 PM

Yea My car was pretty quiet with the 3" X and 2 1/2 race pro's, and 2 1/2 tails. I am wondering what a 3 1/2 X , and 3" exiting the X into 3" ultra flows and tails will sound like :D, I made a video yesterday of mine with open headers, but it sound's like crap, Dunno if the video recorder was picking up weird resonance or what, but it sure sounds tough other than that crappy humming sound! Carb was sticking on the throttle plates again in back and wouldn't let it idle down, minor issue .. Oh well its running and just got minor stuff for spring now!

ta man 11-19-2011 05:04 PM

How about making clearance on your floorpans to use a bigger case muffler..is your back seat usable..or does it have one?

grandville455 11-19-2011 08:22 PM

I thought about cutting a notch out of the longer mufflers like lee did too as a option possibly? The back seat is out ,but don't want to do anything to the floor pans..

BLANK1 11-20-2011 12:41 AM

Here's a video link to some videos of my 68 GTO and my brother's 69 GTO. My 68 has a 3" exhaust w/x-pipe and 3" Flowmaster Super 44's. My brother's Executioner 69 GTO has 3" pipes with an H-pipe and Super 44's with 3" tailpipes. The 505 on the dyno is in my brother's 69.

Looks like a nasty wear mark on the inside of your drivers slick...your suspension hitting your rubber?

Jeff Hamlin 11-20-2011 01:06 PM

Good eye Steve we did find a a bolt incorrectly installed before we set out.
Not as bad as it looks, more of a scuff.

65gto69 11-20-2011 03:34 PM

Video of mine is in my signature (first link), only idle.

Setup is in my signature, exhaust system is: heddman hussler 1 3/4" to 3", 3" pipes to dynomax super turbos before the rear axle.

Second link is at maple grove with cutouts open.

My buddy might but its a 540 BB Chevy in a 70 Chevelle.

gtorich 11-20-2011 10:29 PM

Darby i have an old one from 10-10-2007....if you do a search under "Street pro mufflers" it comes up......as usual i can"t seem to get it into this thread.

This is with a 455 crower 60919 cam 2 1/2 pypes with X over and street pro mufflers, this also has a tri power on it.

New set up is the same 455, except 290 cfm alum heads by sd along with their OF cam.

Maybe someone with more "Puter" savy than me could post it in this thread.

How about a comparison before and after blocking the intake manifold exhaust crossover. Some have said there is an audible difference.

Engine is 1971 455 overbored to 462, 6X-8 heads running about 9.75:1 CR, Comp Cams Magnum 280, 800 cfm AVS e-brock carb on a P4B. Exhaust is Hooker Competition Headers, 1.625" x 28" into 3" collector, 2-1/4 inch exhaust pipes back to Dynomax Super Turbos, no H-pipe, no X-pipe.

First link is the way it sounded before I blocked the intake manifold exhaust crossover:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fmccth_JWeQ

The second is the same but with the intake manifold exhaust crossover blocked:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pd3Dm...eature=related

Not sure if I can hear any difference.

Whoa, can"t believe i got that to work. LOL

Forgot to mention, Dougs headers on the vid, before i got the alum heads i was running 6X-8 heads with a mild port job.

grrr421 11-21-2011 02:22 AM

Has a better rumble than mine You win.

ahnuld 11-21-2011 03:31 AM

Mine is in my signature, at time idle was high and exhaust leak at header. TRi y's, tripower-not stock at all, 3 inch with thrush welded mufflers. Have electric cutouts but there closed in vid.

Darby, that was with the 6X-8 heads and Crower 60919 cam............I now have the 290 SD alum heads and the "Old Faithful" cam.........kinda odd but it doesn"t sound too much different than my old set up

Maybe i need to get some different mufflers instead of the street pro"s

Okay cool, I am working on this 3 1/2 X that came with the car with bullets just to see how they sound on it lol, got some welding to do to add some width to it as my headers are wider, hope to have video thursday of it?

mogeo 11-23-2011 10:10 PM

First is idling, then my son revving it up, then with the electric cut outs open. The sound gets distorted with the electric cut outs open because its too much for the mic:
http://s942.photobucket.com/albums/a...t=100_0660.mp4

Next is me light throttle pulling away (not enough room):
http://s942.photobucket.com/albums/a...t=100_0659.mp4

400 .30 over
10.75:1 16x
212/224 112 LSA
Edelbrock/ Holley 770 vac sec.
LBMs hogged out to 3" with 3" collector, 3" dumps, NO "X" (yet), to 2.5" mandrel bent tubes with tails and 2 Magnaflows.

Rich

grandville455 11-24-2011 05:44 PM

Sounds good, what magnaflows? Here is mine with a 3 1/2 X and 3 1/2 Bullets, I had to cut the X cause the headers that were in this car were Hooker super comps, and they were narrower than my Hustler's with those adapters, anyway after trying to figure out where to cut it and how much to weld back in etc so i could get it as close to the rear of the trans as possible, cause that's How it will be in spring. I ended up with a 1/4 gap at the top of the drivers collector ,cause the bullets were hitting the bottom of the floor by tunnel, this was just to hear how it sounded it with them, I will change it or just get a New X I haven't decided yet, But it sounds good! When I revved it the smoke is from dumping trans fluid down my carb from before to store it, and the mic kinda gets muffled when it is revved up too. This was just a test tho as its 50 here today !! Turn up the volume! :D . It's put away now til spring :(

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...1124155649.jpg

mogeo 11-29-2011 11:03 PM

Mufflers are Magnaflow 14” case MPE 11226.

Sounds real nice. Great idle!

Cant believe more have not posted.

Is that the road paver cam in there Darby? It sounds pretty beefy! What all have you done to the motor since it's gone in the bird?

My only sound is the old retired wagon in 2010 before the wreck. It'll sound different in the 65 next year!
The link in my sig is all I have.....
Iron headed, 60245, RPM and Quad, Dougs 1 3/4 headers, 3" pypes w/X, race pros, and 3" tails.

Ron Yes it is!, The Wagon motor going in the 65 huh? The only thing different is some 1 7/8 hedman hustler's on it now.So next year instead of the 1 3/4 dougs and dumping after the X Will be those hedmans with a 3 1/2 x out the X then flowmaster reducer cones to 3" Ultra flows and then 3" torque tech tail pipes, No more open exhaust. SO it will be interesting to see how it runs with all that. Even so I am sure at some point it will be faster and will want the bigger exhaust if it doesn't now, but somehow i think it will love it!

gearbanger 12-20-2011 11:05 PM

I got a cool CD for Tom Hand years ago that had sounds of all the different mufflers with and without x pipe, at different RPMs and revving. It also had flow tests on the mufflers. It was worth 10 times what I paid for it. Don;t know if it is still available or not.
