Mondello Tiger Head CNC Upgrade

We just completed port development on the "Race Ready" package standard port Tiger head. For discussion purposes and the variations in flow bench data, the following information is the actual increase in CFM from the baseline head. The port CSA is about 2% larger, the goal was to improve mid lift airflow.
Intake lift / CFM Gain .100 +5 .200 +12 .300 +11 .400 +11 .500 +21 .600 +21 .700 +26 .750 +33 .800 +19 .900 +15 Exhaust lift / CFM .100 +22 .200 +20 .300 +22 .400 +28 .500 +29 .600 +18 .700 +19 .800 +21 .900 +22 The package uses the standard 2.250" intake valve, 1.800" exhaust valve in the standard valve location. Port velocity is increased to achieve strong low to mid lift numbers while keeping the port size to a minimum. I've attached port mold pictures below, the new port is the one on the right. It is nice to see actual numbers as well as port shapes.
Looks like you and your crew have settled in nicely at Mondello. I can only wait to see what other developments come out of your shop in regards to the Pontiac market. |
I paid a visit yesterday. All I can say is if you are a Pontiac enthusiast or any brand for that matter this shop has a lot to offer! There will be some nice stuff showing up in the future. A bunch of things already developed to meet and exceed anyones needs. It appears new products may also show up that will benefit us as well.

Intake development
Any one working on an Intake for the Pro Port Heads??? I think Wade at BOP had mentioned something maybe coming in the new year. We will definately need some development on Intake choices for all the new port designs that are coming out. Nice port moulds on the Tiger head.

Nice shaping...those should work out great. If you raised the floor did you weld it up or? What is the cross section area at the pushrod on your port? What is the actual flow volume (cfm) at .700 lift on your intake port? Thanks |

We raised the floor about .125 with epoxy, moved the port over about the same. I don't have the CSA data with me, peak air flow was just under 450CFM on a 4.375" bore. IIR the CFM on my Tigers I got from AllPontiac/Cerelli with same valve size/location flowed like 412 @ .750..so +33 is right there..Glad to hear velocity mentioned... If I ever go to a 535 CI I might be in the market.. Would love to visit your new shop sometime.. See ya at Norwalk |
Very nice work Calvin! Will these heads require more offset on the intake rockers since you widened the port? Any idea how much $$$$ to modify the Tiger intake manifold to match?

I've always liked the Tiger heads and felt that they are the ultimate all out classic inline race head but even though I've entertained the thought of putting a set on a serious street car I also realized it wouldn't make any sense unless you run .800 inches of lift or more to maximize the heads potential. ( which kinda throws the street part out the window.....) Thanks to Calvin Hill and Bill Anderson's port modifications we now have a "streetable" Tiger that flows over 440 CFM at around .750''-800" with strong mid flow numbers to boot. I've been told by a reliable source that the CSA went from 3.55" to only 3.61"!! So here is my dilemma....... do I buy a pair to put on a 535 inch Pro Tour/ Texas Mile 72 Firebird and then use my ported CV-1 heads on a future drag build or should I hold out and see how the new Edelbrock Pro ports turn out. :confused:

440cfm @ .750 is moving some air. Wish my heads did that.

Milepost, that's the exact engine in my stock looking 69 firebird street car. 535, ported tiger heads, and custom intake manifold low enough to close the super 400 hood. yes, it has .800 lift with 264-270 duration on the comp cam. 11.1 comp. I just took it for its first ride, and untuned, it feels as fast as my procharged 80 formula. The 80 formula puts down over 600 HP and torque to the ground, so I'm using it as a gauge. Will hit the chassis dyno in a month or two to tune it.

65 NSS, thanks for the time and effort you guys put into these projects. We ( Pontiac people)now have no excuse not to kick Bowtie Butt, at least on the street classes and lower level racing. Now the rest of us have to get off the computer and start stroking checks to all you guys and buy the real good stuff and keep you in business.

Correction...my .750 lift CFM is only approx. 392 not 412.....My memory sux..Sorry ...found flow sheet.:rolleyes: My heads are also a set of "early" heads. They were flowed in '07....Not sure what a set of newer Tiger's flow...

I agree with your "classic inline" evaluation. Edelbrock including the Pro Port may end up better suited for "classic inline" applications that arent biggest bore maximum rpm combos. I see best advantage of the Pro Port is custom tailoring to an application. Time will tell though. Its not inconceivable that someone meets or beats the Tiger with a Pro port... just seems less likely. Keep in mind a few years ago it seemed quite a stretch to think a std Edelbrock could hit 350 let alone to where it is now. There are some very talented people amongst us always looking to raise the bar. Put politics and loyalties to the side and reflect on just how far we've come from a strictly technical viewpoint.... truly amazing. And... thanks for making a very overlooked distinction... "classic inline" vs the other options we have available. |

Milepost, Here are the pictures of the Super 400 hood, the sheet metal
metal intake manifold and the water crossover. I built the manifold out of .100 aluminum and 1/2" plate stock for the flanges and made the crossover to kinda match the sheetmetal manifold. I have not tested the manifold yet so I don't know how well it will work but it does all fit under the hood. I have alot of money in the hood so I was not going to cut it up. Steve |

My Tiger head design still has allot left un discovered, and guy's like Calvin are just starting to bring it out. This head was designed with allot of room for diversity and I'm glad to see that some are tapping it. I have a prototype from way back in 2003 that I used for R&D that has several different port configurations. Some of you might remember seeing it at Norwalk or in the article HPP wrote when I first started showing it to the public. One port is the as cast that was tested for the article that flowed 422. Another port is a max effort port that flows 480 cfm with a 2.350 valve. Another is a port very similar to what Calvin has done (not as wide) that flows 440 with a 2.250 intake valve.
