1969 GTO Ram Air III 4spd - Frame Off
Here is my latest project, a frame off on a Matador Red '69 GTO Ram Air III 4-spd (non-Judge)
PHS options: 4BBL 400 R/A 4spd Trans 3.55 Safe-T-Track AM Radio Hideaway Headlights Remote Mirror Rally II Wheels Hood Tach Console Power Steering Tilt Column Disc Brakes Soft Ray Windshield Ride Handling Pkg. I have a correct WS engine out of a 69 Judge that is rebuilt and ready to go in. All new everything, this car is really going to be sweet. Unfortunately I don't have any before or disassembly pics thanks to a computer crash which I am upset about. Frame is almost done. I am not using the brake valve shown in pics, I am using an original Pontiac unit instead of the Corvette unit supplied with the new kits. The rear frame rail looks bent to me, are they supposed to be straight across, or have a slight inward curve on them at the gas tank opening? http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...3-19180059.jpg http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...3-19180159.jpg http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/k...3-19180622.jpg |
Very nice John! Looking forward to seeing it all come together!
|
Looks good John.
I agree with you that the rear frame rail does look bent up and inward some and also think they are suppose to be straight across. How is the body? What interior color does she have? |
Yep...
tweaked a bit...but looks good otherwise! Ron
|
Damn that's a clean, pit-free frame! Looking good John.
|
Nice frame!:)
|
Looks nice. Yes the rear crossmember is rolled a bit.
Is that a 70 Superbee / Coronet on the rotisserie in the background?. MIke |
Thanks guys. The rear crossmember has been straightened since these pics were taken. Body is starting to look really good now. Will get pics up soon.
The Dodge is a '70 Coronet R/T 383 auto. |
John, it looks good--look forward to more pictures. I assume this will be as stock as possible.

Maybe it is a 70 Super Bee they came standard with a 383,real 70 Coronet R/T's came standard with a 440. |

More pics coming soon. I want to get them on Photobucket as a backup to avoid losing anymore pics. |
Looks good! I vote for the rally gauges.
|
Gauges
|
Gauges without question. Make sure you put in the correct ones (not '70). :D
|
Here are some pics of the body. Almost ready for color primer.

That is going to be nice. Was it a driver shape car before? Where did you find it?
I am working on a matador red, black interior, Judge now. As far as loosing your pictures, you might want to take the computer somewhere and see if they can recover them. -Doug |
Nice John.
|
that looks awesome :D

Color Primer
|
Sweet car, John.
Definitely gauges; that's a no brainer. Both of my 69 Judges were hood tach/idiot light cars, which didn't make any sense to me. Scott |
Body back on frame
Engine is in, body back on frame. A few more progress pics.

How's the project coming John?
|
Not much progress lately. They had to finish the '70 Dodge and get that out the door, so mine is still in about the same spot for now.
|
Jammed!

Cool!!!

Looking good! Can't wait to see the outcome!

Looking awesome
That is looking awesome GTO JOHN! Mine is in the rotisary doing body work now. Looking forward to getting to your point hopefully by spring. I was wondering if I could bother you for a couple of close-up shots of where the tail light panel meets the quarters. Mine are rusted out there and need to do some fabrication around there soon and would like to see how they were attatched there from the factory. Cannot find a replacement tail panel and I want it to look factory when I get it done. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Dennis. |
Dennis, I can get you some pics when the car comes home. I also have a couple tailpanels that might be usable. Need to get them dug out to see.
|
Thanks!

That would be awesome, I have kind of surrendered to the fact I was probably going to have to do a lot of playing around trying to fab something. The center section of mine is fine, all I need is the ends. In case you happen to have one that is damaged, or whatever in the middle, it would still work fine for me.
I cant tell you how much I appreciate this! :D Dennis |
Looks great John!!!
|
I had a red on red Matador 69 GTO convertible for 15 years before selling it in 2000, correct Matador red is almost pornographic!
|
Once other thing, the car came with standard glass and I was thinking about installing factory tinted glass. What do you guys say?
|
For what it's worth John there are certain things that a 69 GTO must have and if I'm keeping one I'd add them even if it was a Ram Air IV Judge convertible!
1...hideaways 2...soft ray glass all around 3...power antenna (unless it's a judge) 4...wood wheel 5...rallye wheels 6...gauges and either tach And no Cordova top! That's just my 2 cents but I'm right about it! |
Color Sanding
Got paint on it now. Color sanding and buffing is next.

DAMN!
|
Car is done at body shop. Going to get pictures and settle final bill tomorrow, then off to interior shop for headliner, then final assembly can begin!!
|
Thats going to be one mighty damd good looking GTO , John.
Great colors and equipment - bonus points for HideAways - as always. :D Everything looks real top notch. Congrats to you Man May it serve you well for many years and many roads ahead. :usa2: |
Very nice looking 69!!! Thanks for sharing pics and progress!

Final Body Shop Pictures
Here are the final pictures from the body shop. I'm very pleased with the results. It was neat to see how the Matador Red changed colors when different lights were on inside the shop. Still have not seen it in the daylight yet....

Wow John, That looks awesome, very encouraging. I hope to have my 69 in paint next summer! Thanks for the updates and photos.
|
Oh my!
That is so nice! |
No new update other than I got the headliner installed since the last update. Getting started on the final assembly including dash, interior, and trim after the New Year.
|
One more question: since this car had black interior, I have heard the RAM AIR hood decal should be black also? The white decal would really pop in contrast, but I want to put the correct color ones on.
|
John, I would go white on the Ram Air decals, white would look better
and show up better, and there was no rule about the hood decals matching the interior. Factory photos from when the cars were new show many cars with black interiors and white hood decals. |
I would go with white, would match up with the GTO emblems. Car looks excellent, reminds me of when my old Judge got painted, dammit. John.
|
My red on red car had white RA decals from the factory but it also had a white top.
When I restored the car I put black ones because I found that the white ones had too much pop (I had switched to a black top). That being said the white ones look nice since the match the white of the fender emblems. I'd color key to the interior. Seems to be what they did with carousel judges. |
All the Matador R/A cars i've seen have had White hood decals.
Sure that i have not seen them all tho. 69 Judges have been interior color keyed - and opposite of interior color. Original paint car examples. Do you have the build sheet for this one ? Sometimes they have an ID box for callout color - or at least most of the 70 Judge Bsheets did .... |
