The wife and I have been talking a lot about what color to paint her 62 Catalina wagon. Ultimately it's her decision but these are the 3 colors we've been dicussing the most. We'll make the interior match whatever color we...oops...she decides. Let me know what you think. If you have another color you like, let us know. If you have any pics of wagons with one of these colors that would be greatly appreciated.

OK, so it's time for nerdy Engine-Ear to chime in...

What are the factory exterior and interior colors? What shape is the original upholstery in?

Bamboo Cream is boring.

Never saw a Belmar Red Safari...that's kinda neet.

Yorktown Blue is great...still like Ensign Blue WAAY better on ANY '62.

...but since you are open to new ideas, why not Frost Silver? I think it's a late-production '62 color (maybe a differnt name for '62, BTW) and frankly, it's an absolutely righteous color on a deuce.

It was originally white w/ blue interior. The original upholstery will need completely redone. There's a few pieces that are probably o.k. without touching them but the majority is rough. I like the Ensign blue and had thought of the Frost Silver also, just seems we keep coming back to these 3 colors. I'm not a fan of the Bamboo cream myself but she seems to like it. Dad's 62 is Belmar Red and we just thought it would be neat to have matching 62's.

Now you've really got me thinking about the silver.

I agree with Matt on Ensign Blue. Belmar Red would be my next choice.

Ensign Blue is uncommon and looks cool as hell.

Then again, so is Silverleaf Green and Frost Silver...

I'm starting to lean towards Frost Silver with dark blue interior.

I'm with those guys on the Ensign Blue with a small amount of flake for depth.

I think it would look good painted a 1965 Iris Mist.

I think that was actually the first color she had mentioned. Maybe go with a white roof and Iris Mist on bottom. What color interior??? Gray?

Iris Mist with white or even Bamboo Cream and a gray interior would look pretty sharp.

What color is the interior?

Remember, there is a lot of sheetmetal there, so choose wisely.

Belmar Red with the right wheel and tire combo would be killer -- love that color. It could even stand a two tone with a Bamboo Cream.

A sleeper color to me is '65 Mayfair Maize, very distinctive but not a hammer to your retinas like a Daytona Yellow would be. Would look great with a 70/78 blackwall and cragar ss wheel combo.

Cadillac Firemist/Firefrost colors from the same era, which would be available as a special order color. I recall a gold/bronze that was gorgeous.

Those all assume a fairly stock outer appearance; if you are going for a custom look, some Foose-like two toning may be in order, like a muted cream over champagne with a nice pinstripe.

If you want her to be the baddest mother in the valley, paint it like the Smokey Yunick #22 car -- gold over black with the red stripe with a fawn interior.

PS: I meant to use Dawnfire Mist for Belmar Red, if Belmar is the bright 'fire engine' red which I definitely would not do.

Mayfair Maize is the ugliest color Pontiac ever created.

Some shades of green aren't bad but I'm personally not a fan of it. I reuse to buy a green car for myself. Although I did buy a 72 Lemans that I'mcurrently driving and has green interior. Already have black seats and a black dash to star changing it over.

Red, then as Matt suggested, Silverleaf Green.

Just realized I had a typo in my last post. Meant to say I refuse to buy a green car. NO green or any shades of it for me. The wife would probably go for the Pinehurst Green but if I'm painting she knows to not even suggest it.

These colors do not look the same and I did not read through them to figure out if they were still Ensign Blue or not, but are listed as same

The lighting and/or screen I am looking at may have affected these but to me the post coupe race car looks like could be either 1961 Bristol Blue or 1962 Ensign Blue. The hardtop Cat looks like it could also be Ensign Blue but seems a little darker to me.

I had actually found these pics but the difference in color has me wondering what is correct and what Ensgn Blue is supposed to look like. That why I was asking if anyone else had some pics. I'm hoping there will be one at Norwalk to look at.

Both articles indicate that the color is Ensign blue but they look very different to me. I'd say the second one is more accurate. Gay's car looks more aqua blue and doesn't even look like a factory color. JMO

Exactly what I was thinking.

Thinking hard about painting it Ensign Blue or maybe something like a Cobalt Blue with a silver roof. Then again, don't know why I'm thinking about it at all, it's the wife's decision.

White roof goes a long way toward keeping them cool inside in summer.

Not advocating the color (though it has grown on me - especially the interior) but the white on top sets off whatever color you choose.

X2 for the white roof. My ride stays as cool as a cucumber (And kind of looks like one) on the hottest summer days.

I think I'd do a later blue like Nightwatch with a Silver roof.

I personally would not do a darker blue and silver, just my preferance is all. Reminds me of the late 80's early 90's when everyone was doing a similar combo. Mustang, Daytona and such (switched obviously). I do however like the lighter blues and silver, looks a lot more classic vs a custom rod.

Just my thoughts and to each their own, thats the great thing about these old cars, we are welcome to do whatever we want with them.

I appreciate everyone's input and received a lot of great ideas. At Norwalk my wife saw a 1965 GTO painted Iris Mist and decided that was her color. Going to go with gray interior. Not my first choice but I do like it. As long as she's happy that's all that matters.

I like the Iris Mist selection. It will look killer! But I would go with Parchment interior with plum trim for the dash and on the door panels. If you ever saw the parchment with the iris mist you would know what I mean! If you go gray interior, it would be too much on a big wagon and would detract from the exterior color. JMO.....

COOL! Get color samples for Plum and for Dark Blue Metallic with the Iris Mist paint. That may change her mind.

Very nice car and color combo!

Parchment interior does look nice. My only issue is that this is going to be daily transportation, and I do have kids. Don't want to think about what that parchment interior is going to look like after a while. Want something to hide dirt a little better. The GTO we saw at Norwalk had black interior, might go that direction just to be practical.

If you are going with a cloth int, a tweed or something, the gray will look nice and be more comfy. I'd use a later model front sent too like I did on my 61 Safari. Get something out of an 80s or so Buick, etc. Something with a split bench with recliner. You will be happy you did.
Safer with headrests too.
Have you thought about belts/should harnesses?

I used '69 era belts/harnesses and wellded mounts to the B pillar for the shoulder belts. It works well.

'62s have no safety equipment-
think about
head rests
shoulder belts
disc brakes
dual master
as minimums.
Gotta take care of those loved ones you know.

Yep, already have plans for dual master cylinder and disc brakes. I was thinking of mounting later model 3 point seat belts. Had not thought about head rest though. I was intending on using a pair of 64 GP buckets and console. Also thought about quick ratio gear box.

Cloth = stains with kids. Leather is not that expensive.

Bringing up an old thread... Well my wife had decided on the 1965 code P Iris Mist for the exterior and I thought we had decided that the interior would be gray cloth on all the fabric areas and plum on all the metal. Well I sprayed a piece of metal with Iris Mist, then sprayed a plum color next to it. Now she's not sure she likes the plum. So I'm asking again for ideas about interior color. We've thought about two tone gray, and black & gray but I think it might look better with something a bit brighter. What do you think?

Go for two tone gray for the interior, gray cloth and perhaps silver on the the metal.
The car will be colorful enough with the Irish Mist for the exterior.

I'm with Matt on the Silverleaf Green, but then again, I may be biased. :D

Nocturne Blue would be my second choice.

Either with a white or parchment interior would rock the house!
