1969 gto convertable Ram Air IV
 

Hi guys,
A year ago I got wind of a Ram Air IV motor for sale while at an out of town swap meet. Got in touch with the guy when I got home and was able to buy the motor. After talking with him I felt there was a chance the car it went in was still around. A year of dead ends finally tuned up a Ram Air IV gto convertable of amazing condition, Zero rust ever, all original panels, Loaded with options, Red, white top, white interior. Its basically my dream car.

Its missing original exhaust manifolds, and the hard to find carb, power driver bucket seat and passenger recliner. The seats were parchment. Maybe someone in the phoenix, scottsdale area has found the parts that belong to this car??? That's a long shot but it could happen.

I will post a few pics in as found condition.

Very Very Nice.
Run the phs on the block and car and see if they came from the same dealer.
iirc 59 verts recieved the RA IV. Not sure of the breakdown from Auto to 4sp. Boss will know.

So the engine you bought at a swap meet a year ago is the original engine to the car you recently found??

The car is a freemont car. Build is february 2nd week. as for the motor being original to the car ,the buld date is december 27 1968. I have seen ram air IV's being built earlier than car before,but never this early. The vin is barley legable but appears to be correct. Have any of you seen ram IV's built 8 weeks earlier than production of car before??

I'd think since the RA IV wasn't a very active combo, they'd have a longer lead time possibly?

(make a few batches of RA IV's and wait for the cars to get ordered?)

Fremont had barely visible VINs in different spots than most.

Not to say it doesn't happen. But never seen a WW RA IV built that early before, and it matches a car you found later is like winning the lotto X2 with it being a solid Matador Red with parchment hideaway vert.

I would venture to guess the block date of Dec 27, 1968 would be legit for a 02B Feb built RAIV. Especially a Fremont car. That is really only about 6 weeks anyway.

I would try getting ahold of Classic Performance Restorations in Phoenix. They run across alot of Pontiac stuff in the area. Maybe they have or know of the missing parts?

By looking at the engine compartment pics, I'm betting that car has been restored before.

Thanks I wonder how many ram air IV convt had 433 rear gears. This one still retains its correct rear end. This car was restored in 1992 it had 33,000 miles on it the, and still does. It had original paint on it then and there was only one dent in the left front fender ,and it was small. It had no rust,thats right it is dry az type body,its amazing. I have all pics during resto ,and pics before resto. It was like a time warp. The car was put in storage and never finished. I have buffed the quarter and fender they are both perfect. There are a couple of chips that will need to be spotted and the front bumper fits perfect but does have a few cracks. The powder coating is faded under hood as it sat outside for awhile.
all in all it is in amazing shape.

Well i dont know the whole story of this car but I do know it left the restoration shop in 1994 to have the motor put in it. The shop was Randys Specialties paint and body in Phoenix,he has done alot of gto's and judges . He says the car left his shop to have the motor put in and never heard from the owner again. I do not know all details however the guy I bought the motor from showed me pics of the car. He said the guy left the car there for a few years and never got him all the parts to put the motor in. At some point the owner came and got the car I am guessing in about 2001. He tried to take the motor but the guy kept it and told him he owed storage. Meanwhile I purchased the motor from him and kept trying to find the car.
I finally found the car and bought it. I think I am the third owner. Im sure I will find more details,and I am still hoping to find the interior,although its been so long,I will give it some time.

Any one out there know someone who may want a 1966 bonneville,convertable 421,tri power ,factory 4spd,air, tach and guages,buckets console,silver blue with white interior, it was driving when it was stored,I think original paint whats left of it ,az dry car, body in excellant shape. Its 20,000.00 but excellant restorable rare car.

Stoplight to stoplight and all those options for such a short ride. That has to be one of the most highly optioned RAIV convertible out there?

Any updates on it?

When I look at PHS's for IV cars I notice there were two kinds of buyers, the drag guys with little or no options especially anything that back then was conceived as a "slow you down" option and then there are the "midlife crisis" and "rich kid" cars that tend to be optioned up like this one.

I think some people just wanted the "top" engine, I suspect most of the people in that second group ended up hating them as a RA IV is not the best daily driver with no bottom grunt and high spinning gears. There was a guy here in Montreal who bought a triple blue 69 RA IV convertible new (my friend knew him) and he sold it 6 months later after repeated trips to the dealer to "fix" the problem with the engine running rough and gutless.:mad:

I heard a collector is going to look at it when good guys show is on in November see what happens. Car is real expensive so the buyers will be very limited.

Very nice score! I'm sure you are very glad you found the body to go with the engine. Did you state how you found the body? I might have missed it. Were you just looking for a 69 to put the engine in originally, or were you dead set on reuniting the engine with the car? I hope you will continue on this thread as you restore your dream car. It should be an easy build due to the shape of the body. At least you have the most important parts if you cannot find the rest. Good luck and enjoy!!

I went back thru the thread but all I see is that he found the car. I guess that could mean the guy he bought the engine from told him who the person was that brought the car to him and he seeked him out and found him, but I didn't get that from how I read it. Anyhow it's late and I'm cornfused so I'll read it again tomorrow.

The multiple RA IV firebirds he's claimed to have found and bought, Judge convertibles he's found or owns, RA IV TA's....the list goes on.

How he can manage to stay on a board where multiple user ID's (read personalities) is expressly prohibited is beyond me.

Hello Rocketer I am new here was referred by a guy in Maryland I have been buying parts from. I am restoring a 1969 GTO RAM AIR IV Convertible also, I read the whole thread sounds like a great car. I have never seen a axle option like that in a convertible before was it ordered like that to race?

Is it ok if I PM you I am looking for a few parts to finish my car and was wanting to know if you might have anything to spare. My car was built in Baltimore and somehow wound up down here in Loooooozianna.

Tell us more about the RAIV GTO convt. Sounds like a neat car. What color combo, what options? How/where did you find it?

Not that he needs it, but i do have to defend Hobi (or whatever he goes by today). He may be a bit unorthodox, but he is a straight shooter and has always been fair to deal with. I would say if he claims to have it, he has it!
