When you cant even put an old family pet down with dignity. Our old beagle/lab mix is at the end of his days. He has been going down hill for a while. I figured as long as he was eating & was able to get outside to do his business, to just let him be. He has gotten to the point where he gets a foot or two out the door & thats where he goes. My oldest son brought this dog home as a puppy his first day of highschool. That son is now over 30. Dog is going on 17 years. I have been calling around to all the local vets & animal hospitals. Cheapest I have found is 125 bucks at the county shelter & I dont even get the remains back for burial!!! Really sad when the allmighty dollar is more important than the loss of an old friend. Am thinking I will take him for a last final ride out to the Tonto national forest where we used to go on hikes many years ago. He always liked that area. Will probably be his final resting place!

This kills me to see them go down hill.

We have 4 Shepherds, 11,9 and two are 7. I see the oldest changing monthly.

we had to put our beloved yellow lab Lucy to sleep may 4th, she would have been 13 on june 15th. we had the vet come to our house to give her the shot because we didn't want her to go by herself in a strange place with strangers around her. myself, my wife and our son Adam were all with her and holding on to her when she took her last breath and i will tell you that without question in my 55 years on this earth that was by far the hardest thing i have ever done and i have a lump in my throat as i type this and can not hardly talk about her without getting emotional. she wasn't our pet she was part of our family and i miss her everyday and hope that we gave her at least a little bit of all of the joy and happiness that she gave us. we miss you Lucy and you will forever be in our hearts !!!!

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

call a horse doctor/vet.had one out to my house 3 weeks ago and put my Lab sindy down..fed here a huge ass ribeye b4 the doc came,all the neighbors came and gave her some as well.farm vets do it for the love of the animal,city vets do it for the love of money.sorry to hear about the loss,thats why the good lord made puppys.We are going to the pound for another Lab.It sucks as far as losing a pet/friend but the love ya get in return is priceless.Good luck my friend.

Get some pictures and videos of your dog before he passes away. Spend some quality time with him before he crosses the Rainbow Bridge. :( Not easy loosing a loved one.

Sorry for your pet. Our Pug-terrier mix is going down hill.She has hearing problems doesn't play with her 'squeaky' toys anymore.Stays inside alot.Still likes to ride in the truck.eats good. We had to put down my wifes cat Rose the day before Norwalk this year. wasn't a happy time.Irony-5yrs ago the day befiore Norwalk a little black cat showed up and 'helped' me work on the trailer.When I came home the wife had this little black cat inside-Jasmine' she is a trip.

i spent alot of nights the the last several months that Lucy was still with us sleeping on the living room floor with her so she wouldn't be alone because she couldn't get up or down very easily and her eye sight had gotten bad and i didn't want her to be scared of things she could no longer see, i don't really know how much it conforted her but i sure know good it made me feel even though i could barely get up and walk the next day. she was a very special part of our family and will not ever be forgotten and could not ever be replaced

Scott did the same with our first Irish setter Penny.The look in their eyes-always makes me 'feel'.The creator has something special for them.

Been there several times...another one or two comming in the next year or so.

i had somebody ask me one time who my best friend was and i replied... thats easy, its Lucy our yellow lab and he said its suppose to be your wife, i thought for a second or two and i said i will tell what....you lock your wife and your dog in the trunk of your car for 30 minutes and when you open it you will see which one is glad to see you and that will tell you who your best friend is..........i promise you it won't be your wife

In 06 I had to euthanize my keeshond. I had her for 11 years and she was my best friend. I also was the one who worked on her the last 7 days of her life. I am a veterinary technician by trade. When the shot(euthanasia solution) was given, I held her until I knew she was gone. It sucked. I have assisted in well over a thousand euthanasias over the years and nothing hurts worst when it is your own. My wife and I have no kids and are critters are our kids. My condolences to you and your family.

Keith your loss is bad and the situation really sucks.

We had to put our cat down. Sammy was about a year old, a big burly orange tabby that was a big pillow for me. I found him on the porch with a badly broken hind leg. I"m not an emotional guy at all, but i knew immediatley what the deal would be, but hoped for the best. A few other contributing factors froma pretty unusual summmer added to the situation. It was a very tough day.

The usual vet was in surgery so we had to go to the "emergency" clinic. In the end what bothered me most was how judgemental they were on my values. Certainly he could be fixed with a major surgery. We had talked about this before and we feel that since an animal can't consent, tell you he has chronic pain, can't understand complications, how is it fair to them to go through that? Rather than support we got opposition for our values. That really made it bad.

Maybe I'm not right....but you have to respect peoples' decisions. I deal with Jehovah's WItnesses at times and occasionally I have to recommend blood and blood products to them. I understand they respectfully decline them, yet I still do all I can to help. Sometimes it doesn't end good medically, but if that's their choice why should I deny them dignity in their decisions???

We left emotionally spent.

We put our Chocolate Lab Missy down 11 years ago, and I still miss her. Not a day goes by I don't think about her. She gave us 15 years of unconditional love and loyalty. Even typing this brings tears to my eyes. I haven't had a better friend in all my years than that dog, she went everywhere with me, never left my side, not once in her life ever needed a leash, and if she was here today she be laying at my feet while I type this, looking up at me now and then to see if we were going to go for her morning walk.....Cliff

Norm is now lying peacefully under a tall pine tree on top of the Mogollon Rim above Payson Az. Rest easy my old friend. The years were not kind to you but they were endured with kindness & dignity. In his final years he was totally deaf & could only see a change in light around him. He was a good old dog. Dont know his exact age but we had him well over 16 years. Thanks everyone for your kind words. Much appreciated.

My heart goes out to you Keith. I'm so sorry. But if anything they teach us love and never ending faithfullness. I had to put down our dog around 2007. I held her until she was gone. Like said previously. The hardest thng I've ever done. When all was said and I could beaily see where I was going. The Vet (which was wonderfull) asked if I was OK. I just said that they give us unconditional love and that we are here for them,. It is our duty to take care of them and love them and look out for them, especially when it is their time. Like human euthenasia should be, when they need to go why hold them back for our own feelings. God entrusted us with their lives, and their dignity too. We all will be together again sometime. Well,,,Our Sherpei/white lab mix has not come out from under the corner table in the living room for 2 days now. She is 10 years old & am sure she misses "Norm" Even her favorite cookie snacks wont coax her out. She has been moving a little slow with hip problems the last couple of months but dont think thats the issue. Going to spend some time with her tomorrow & see if I can get her to perk up. May take her for a ride in the Tempest. It's been a while since she has gone for a ride. She always liked rides. Would really hate to loose 2 dogs so close together. We will see.

So sorry for your loss. I'm still really upset over losing my 4 legged best friend. :(

My sympathies to you and yours.
I had my 11 year old Rat Terrier (Crash) put down in July. He was diabetic. The final two straws were when he went blind and a month later, he was no longer able to walk. The vet was very caring and attentive with him and let me stay in with her while she put him down.
What surprised me was that about two weeks later, we got a beautiful sympathy card from her with Crash's paw prints on it and everyone in the office wrote something on the card. I was impressed by that. My wife is going to frame it along with a picture of him.
