So the paint shop that has been painting my car has somehow managed to misplace my gas tank, chrome trim on lower valance..... :mad:

aside from letting them know my frustration, I have let them know that they will be paying for the trim, new gas tank, sending unit, and everything else associated with what was lost.

i have looked online for new gas tanks but it seems like most gas tanks come without the filler neck. I found a used gas tank craigslist, but i just want to make sure its a 68 gto gas tank.

is there any coding (numbers) on the tank to help me tell whether or not it is a 68 tank?

any advice before i make the purchase?

The tank for a 68 is vented. There is a line up near the filler opening and anther on the top corner. I got my spectra tank (made in canada) from rockauto or someplace like that with the filler neck installed. I think 69 and up uses a different venting method.

Sorry I can't help with numbers, I only know what it looks like.

You should order a new tank from RockAuto.com....very good prices (and very reasonable shipping as well) on the high quality Spectra Premium brand tanks (the tanks made in Canada as the previous poster noted.

the rock auto tanks look good. the only problem is they do not come with the filler neck.

im gonna try my luck with this gas tank i found online. does anyone have any pics of 68 gas tanks?... just to get a visual.

Why don't you want to buy a new tank & new filler neck. There new & putting the neck in is no big deal, it only takes about 5-10 min.'s to put the neck in, & if you don't want to do it any raditor shop can do it for a little bit of money. Besides if the shops paying get the new one with the new neck.

I wouldnt use a used tank. It could have rust in it and it surely will not look as nice.

Checked Rock Auto but theirs did not have a filler neck either.

I just pulled out a gas tank from a 68 Lemans. Might be able to get some pics in a day or two.

Hopefully you can find a new tank & then find an old tank to use the filler neck out of it.

Could you search ebay for guys selling parts for A-bodys, & possibly email them to see if they would sell you just the neck from a useless tank? I'll bet there are still a bunch of them out there, but nobody would bother selling them normally. I junked a 68 tank that was internally rusted about 5 years ago.. :(

I ordered my tank from Advance Auto Parts and it came with the neck attached. UPS used it as a handle. I had to re-solder the neck.

I bought a new tank for my 68 Lemans from our host here - PY. It fit fine once i "rolled" the flanges to match the original tank I removed. Neck was solded in place and did have the vent pipe soldered in too. I'd spend my money here before going elsewhere.

I bought my tank at Advance also. Walked right in and paid them for it in the morning and it was there at lunchtime. They had it right in their warehouse. Price was significantly lower than the repo houses and no shipping cost or waiting for UPS. I paid less than $150 for the tank AND the sending unit combined.
I got a '69 tank because the neck was attached. The only difference is that the '68 neck has a slight upturn that the '69 does not (see John's pic above)
Once I put the bumper on, I saw that it was fouling the gas cap....but it flexed into position quite easily using upward pressure from a floorjack and a 2x4.

Greg, is the photo with the bumper on BEFORE you gave it the floor jack treatment or after?? Is that a GM34D tank?

That pic was before I gave it the jack treatment. I honestly can't remember the part number and no longer have the receipt. The only thing I recall was that the store had one tank without the neck and one with. I was familiar with that and I think the first is the '68 and the latter is the '69. That's the whole issue with the neck as the '68 has a kink in it that the '69 does not.
When I jacked it up, I only moved it enough to clear the bumper. It's not centered, it just works.

I bought a new tank with filler neck attached in 2010 from none other than Performance Years, the host of this forum. It was part number RPR71 and at the time it was $159.00. The problem was it cost about that much to ship!! But it bolted right up and seems to work fine.

I would certainly have bought mine from PY but the same tank at the same price with NO shipping charge was hard to turn down. In fact, I paid $150 for the tank AND the new sending unit. I can't remember the part numbers but they were the same parts, Canadian mfg., that PY and Ames had. Ordered them at Advance Auto Parts in the morning and had them at 2pm.
I made it up to PY when I ordered my Pypes system though...lol

If anyone else with a '68 happens across this thread, just FYI... I got the same GM34D "Made in Canada" 1969 gas tank from Rock Auto along with an A/C Delco sending unit. Parts were shipped instantly, and based on Greg's experience, what we did was compare the tanks side by side after removing the original '68 tank, and slightly bent the filler neck on the new 1969 tank to match the curve of the original. It fits perfectly and it's awesome to have a working gas gauge again!!! No need to go thru the swapping filler necks. The GM34D will work fine with a small amount of tweaking.

Any pictures of the tank installed by chance? Or is it pretty much Like Greg's picts above?

I'll post pix tomorrow, I can't right now, the car's at my shop and I'm not there right now.

You were smart to bend it before you put in on the car. Glad it worked out for you.

It's pretty much the same as Greg's, and I had the same problem with the filler neck. I had to bend it to make it fit the opening in the bumper. Wasn't too bad. If I had it to do all over again I would have gone to Advance. Frankly, I never thought of that at the time.

Bumping an ancient thread! I am in need of a new gas tank for my '68 Lemans. The original tank was fine, but I removed it when I was planning to go with an in-tank pump. I got the new tank and gave the old one away. Now I have changed my mind on the in-tank pump and need an original type tank.

My question - does anyone manufacture a correct '68 tank? I know I can modify a '69 tank and I'm ok with that; I'd just prefer something ready to bolt in if it's available.

the 69 style works fine & Spectra made a nice looking & fitting tank. you just have to bend the filler neck up a bit to have it sit where its supposed to in a 68, but its really no big deal. The one I bought was made in the Spectra Canada plant. I was very happy with it. I assume they still make them there?

Here's a later thread to show a simpler way to get the '69 neck aligned with the '68 bumper opening. Very easy but you have to keep a close watch on the solder joint. It could be touched up easily with a butane torch or big watt soldering iron if necessary.

Ames sells the correct tank with neck for 68 . I just put one in mine early this year . They have a stainless version too . Part # L205R

Thanks for the info. I ended up ordering a Spectra Premium GM34D, so I'll just have to bend the neck slightly before I install it.

Got it installed this weekend. The neck was surprisingly easy to bend.

Good deal. Make sure that there's no spider web cracks in the solder.
