1970 T/A jacks
2 Attachment(s)
I have looked in the assembly book and it clearly shows 3 different styles of bumper jacks. I am not 100% positive on the correct ones, i am posting 2 different styles that are from 70 model yr.
The light blue one is from a Norwood t/a with ralley spare The dark blue is from a van nuys. I'm not sure if its correct for a space saver or full size. I ask because i have 2 70 Van Nuys built cars here, 1 with a full size spare and one with a space saver, and they both had the dark blue style in the trunk. Whats correct ?? And does anyone have a picture of the 3rd style ? If it does exsist ?? |
I can tell you with a high level of certainty that the lighter blue one is what my '73 Rally T/A uses.
|
|
i guess the "Y" style is the other type of jack.
but, I see no discussion of the "type" of spare tires that came with these jacks ? |
Spares....
Trans ams had 15 x 7" Rally's with F60 x 15 RWL Goodyears.....
MOST Formula 400's came with 14 x 7 steelies OR Rally II's with F70 x 14 RWL Goodyears....... Esprit's & base birds came with E78 x 14 dual stripe whitewalls... UNLESS a stowaway spare was ordered... |

ok, thanks. But, which jack is correct for the spare tires ??
Here are attatched pics from the assembly books. Look how the base's have the part number of the what i assume to be the jack next to them. In the 70 book they match up with the jack numbers, but after 70 they don't match what the jack numbers are. |
jacks
I don't think they had a diff jack for spacesaver... The LS1 van nuys here, has it's orig spacesaver. The jack I got for it in cali, is the dark blue one you pictured.
If they used 2 diff jacks for van nuys cars, please let me know... thnx Quote:

now we are getting somewhere.....thanks roundportponchos.
Anyone else ? Go look in your trunks already...lol |
jacks
my 71, is a van nuys car also. It does not have "Y" styled jack...

71 TA
It has a full size spare, & dark blue jack, looks close to our 70.
|
ok, thanks.
|
How long should the jack posts be for each style of 70 jack? I assume Camaros used the same but for an extra hook. The Camaro guys say the jacks were 32 1/2" until around June of 70, then went to 34 1/4
|
3rd week july 70 Norwood.......mine has a "Y" in the trunk
|
van nuys jack
Does anyone here have a spare 71 van nuys jack set up... thnx
|
71's used the silver painted "Y" style shaft,1970 VN's used the silver cadmium plated square shaft and the 1970 Norwood cars used the gold cadmium plated almost a teardrop shape shaft. ALL 3 used different shades of blue and the VN lug wrenches have a "W" on them and have a noticeable different bend on the handle. The 71 lug wrenches I have seen are painted grey while 70 VN or N seem to be painted blue.

Thats why said my 70 has a "Y" in the trunk...I don't know if it was put in there in Norwood Ohio or Evergreen park Illlinois. But I do know it was in there in 1975 along with the original spare. LOL
|
Craig.. who knows.. we now know anything I say is maliciously planted as false info.. So if I said Norwood plant cars had the gold plated jack and yours has the Y, well that is proof again I am full of sh!t..Ask 68 bird, he surely knows the answers..
Oh.. and my disclosure: I do not mean to offend anyone personally or professionally, This is my opinion only, I do not know anything about cars(actually I drive a moped) and.... of yea.. did I say I know nothing about Firebirds, nothing at all .. Craig, you know this is not directed at you. you have a thick skin and have known for a long time I am full of sh!t :) |
Damn, you guys just can't work anything out can you? Sound like a bunch of bickering women, lol. Sometimes I think I joined a Mary K site :D
|
Bill,
Did you ever finish your book on 70-72 birds? Curious when that might come out. |
Can't we all just, get along?:D
|
Glad to see some of you can joke and not take things so personal. ;)
|
Hey Jonesy.....are there pics of a car that you may own posted anywhere on this site? if so Could you please post a link....I would truly like to see them

'jones.. no I am too damn lazy to complete this damn book. as I type I look at four 3" binders full of notes and text, just too damn lazy to convert to a word processing form. sorry ..but doubt I am going to ever finish it.. just more work than I care to spend..
Also, here are some pictures of the gold 1970 Norwood jack with the 1970 style tire iron. that tire iron has never been out of the rubber sheath, the jack has never hit ground as has the spare tire never hit ground. that trunk looked like a time warp,. |
I am surprised this has not been pointed out. Look at the 71,72 and 73 sheets form400 posted in post #6. each list 3 jack assembly numbers, and 3 base assembly numbers BUT look at the base numbers, they list in parenthesis which jack the bases go with, there is a mismatch. from 71 on, no where near 3 base match with the 3 jack assm.
1971 two match 1972 1st one match 1972 2nd none match 1973 none match Thank the notes section on these pages denoted by the circled number next to the jack and base listings will tell you more.. |
Bill, does that jack assy. have a date code on it? I've got a couple of short neck style lug wrenches -- one with an O on it, the other no marking. ...?

I'm thinking I've had pics of some of them on here at one time or another, however issues with photobucket never leaves them up for long. I know I've at least emailed pics to some members that expressed interest in buying a couple cars. If you like I could try to PM a picture or two or PM me your email if you prefer... |

Best of luck with it, truly hope it reaches the light of day at some point. |

Well, I could've been like some others and stripped all the good stuff off, then sold it back to you ;)

That catalog is from 4/81 so the numbers will have changed.

I realize that the MPC says that the keystone style was the only one carried over to 1971, but, despite what it says is not the jack style that has been observed as correct for either plant for 1971. First, I don't want to speak in absolutes since we know this stuff goes, but, a number of years ago I put together a chart for the 1970-71 cars with build date, plant and jack style and jack date code. I looked at a few original cars and even called/emails cars for sale and on Ebay that were original owner, low mileage or look to have been untouched. I was seeing a consistent pattern of the keystone jack for 1970 Norwood, the iron "T" style for 1971 Norwood, and the square style for both 1970 and 1971 VN on data points for these cars where the jack date code made sense to the build date. All three of these styles are around 34"-35" long so they all fit the trunk brackets and are interchangeable (but note that in cars with the space saver spare, the brackets were set in different and the jack laid parallel to the rear seat back). Furthermore, I noticed that the A-bodies seemed to follow the same pattern but I did not really collect data on them. I did see a number of 1970-71 Fremont cars that had the same square mast jack. In fact, a few years ago I picked one up on my local craigslist that came out of a 1971 Fremont built Lemans and has a date code of C1. These square mast jacks are not exactly falling out of trees and are especially scarce this side of the Rockies. Here is another thread where a member has a 1971 Fremont car with a C1 square mast jack. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...highlight=jack |

Tom, post #33 looks like a '74-5 jack assy. to me.

Hi all:
Just a little extra information on the jack issue. On April 29,1970 the jack handle/lug wrench changed from 9775167 to 3987070. This would mean that 1970 cars built around that date would get the newer handle. My July 1970 parts book shows the 3987070 used for 1971 All A,F,G so it looks like the change occurred on April 29th and carried to at least September 1971. My Sept. 1968 parts book shows the jack asm as follows: 67 F/8 & T/8 9783142 68 F/8 & T/8 9793541 69 All 9798342 Made by Universal Tool & Stamping My March 1969, July 1969 and November 1969 book shows: 69-70 All 9798342 70 All except Pont. 9798138 Made by Auto Specialties My July 1970 book shows: 70 P/8 9793842 70 All except Pont. 9798138 My July 1970 book also shows three base part numbers adding to the confusion. |
