Ebay problem
bid on some wheels and won the auction.
price for shipping was displayed as $83 I went to pay it and seller says shipping was $160 and didnt include insurance. So that would mean even more if I wanted insurance. Seller had only 1 feedback and I contacted him while auction was ongoing and asked if his newbieness would be a problem. He assured me it wouldnt and said he had a good record(yea right 1 sale). I called ebay and they advised to cancel the sale and leave a neg feedback. Seller claims the wheels weigh 34# with packing. I called BS because I have exact one here and it weighs 22#. The only way it would add 12# for packing is if he used bricks. He keeps saying that he can get more for them blabla if he relists and claims they are worth the extra in shipping. I used my fedex account and ran the #s including 4 lbs for packing on each wheel and it actually came up cheaper than the $83 quoted by ebay shipping calculator. This guy claims hes not trying to rip me off, says thats what wheels weigh and shipping costs are actual thru UPS. Ive shipped wheels all over the country and never used 12# of packaging. Plenty of times Ive eaten extra shipping charges if it ran over the quote. In defense of Ebay they are completely on my side. I dont want to let these go and am thinking of paying for them and forcing his hand. |
Walk away!
|
Tell him you'll pay the advertised $83 to ship or do you'll have to do what EBAY recommends. Leave it up to him.
But if he's dicking you around with shipping I'd question the quality of the product in the first place. |
In the past a friend of mine has sent the sellers 4 boxes and 4 shipping labels. Seller boxes them up and UPS picks them up. It has always worked out well for him but I would be cautious with your seller.

I was thinking of send him my fed ex account preprinted label and ship using my account.
But that doesnt address the problem of 14# of packaging per wheel(x4) Ive told him to combine into 2 boxes, its the cheapest way to ship. Yes Ive done the above suggestions except the first one. |
If he's going thru a UPS store for shipping quotes they always add a premium to what UPS charges, that's how they pay for those trendy strip mall store fronts. Check online thru USPS, Fedex & UPS using his weight & double check his #'s. If you have an account w/UPS sending shipping labels & boxes may be your best bet.
As a seller w/1 feedback he's got nothing to lose by getting a bad feedback. He'll just start a new account & ebay will do nothing to prevent that. Just curious how many wheels did you get & how did the seller come up w/the original shipping quote? |
4 wheels
Ebay asks how much they weigh when you put the auction page together I know how much the wheels weigh as I have an exact same wheel. |
I think you need to walk away or find a compromise on it. Is it still worth it with the extra shipping? Sucks that people don't stand behind their sales.
P.S. what phone number do you have for ebay?? |
It may well be that the wheel is shipping at a heavier weight because the total dimensions exceed 84"
That would have to be a box of 20x20x13, which is big for a single wheel |

His coming up with 14# EACH more is whats BS. I sent him another email offering to use my Fed Ex account, all he has to do is get some wheel boxes from a tire store, pad the chrome front and stick my prepaid label on it,drop off at Fed Ex. If he doesnt want to do this to complete the sale I smell a scam. |

it wont do me any good to give you a ph # as it has to generate a ticket # for each call |
The seller is probably lazy & got a quote from local packer/shipper type joint to buy their boxes & for them to package & ship the wheels. Squirrels like that need to be beat senseless. If you have a Fed Ex acct, it might be worth shipping him 2 HD boxes & a call tag, that way, he gets the proceeds of the sale & you pay for what the true shipping costs are. Not sure how that will work with eBay, eBay has irked me so much in the last 5 years I rarely list parts for sale.
|
OPH I agree and mostly buy there now not sell.
Seller has agreed to pick up some boxes at tire store pack them up and Ill send him a label to use my Fed ex account. Yes I believe the same that he was lazy and thought he could drop them off at UPS store, walk away and all the work was paid for by me. Oh and a call tag isnt always a good thing, they limit the insurance on it because the person packing it isnt the account holder |
Sellers remorse or just plain screwed up. File a dispute with ebay and make ebay force the seller to abide by the terms he agreed to. It's too easy to let the guy off the hook by cancelling the transaction, particulary since you really want the wheels.
|
I guess it all depends how rare the wheels are. If they are not ultra rare or dirt cheap, I would tell the guy to stick them up his a** just out of principle. Otherwise, I would agree with 66Post and get Ebay to force him to abide by the original terms.
|
I don't think ebay can or will force a seller to complete a transaction. The whole "your bid is a binding contract" is total BS.
The wife recently bid on some .925 silver jewelry & won it for the $9.99 opening bid, it probably had a scrap value of $50 or more. I paid via paypal immediately but had my doubts it would ever show up. After several weeks the seller emails a tracking # which turned out to be bogus & he never responded to any emails after that. ebay did eventually refund our bid + shipping but no downside to the seller other than a negative feedback. All ebay cares about is collecting their fees! |
That's another thought Cammer. Like Stave says happened to him and his wife, it could be a scam. He's trying to get all he can out of you and then you never get what you bought.
It it was me, I'd walk away from this one. Just my :2cents:. |
we ll see
I sent him shipping labels via email thats on my Fed ex account he says they will go out in AM I get email notification on tracking. Hope its not a scam and Im paying for a box of bricks to get sent. |
just got an email update that says 2 packages were picked up and are on their way.
Could be full of bricks for all I know, but seller didnt make a dime off the shipping, its all charged to my Fed ex account. Cant wait to see how good they are. |

I got the wheels Thursday I sent the seller a call tag and they shipped them on my dime(Fed Ex account) I got the wheels with no shipping damage but was sick in what I saw. Seller advertised:"These wheels are in great condition on the face of them". Wheels all have chrome bubbling on the face and are cheap chinese copies, not GM wheels. When I explained to the seller his reply was"they have a part# on the back of them." Now ebay says I need to pay for return shipping if I want a refund. Ive already paid for shipping to get them and now return shipping too? This means Im paying almost as much in shipping as item cost in the first place. And I will have absolutely nothing for my money??? I see no incentive for a seller to be truthful in advertising his items with this kind of return policy. |
anyone have this happen to them before and if so how did you rectify?
|
I thought the "ebay Buyer Protection" covered (their words) your purchase price + original shipping? Provide them w/your FedEx billing & you should be reimbursed. You'll have to eat the return shipping though.
I had one seller send the wrong item & since it was their mistake I expected return shipping to be paid......no dice, I had to pay it. Once returned my seller went dark, poof....disappeared..... no replies to my emails. Filed a claim & ebay refunded the purchase price & original shipping to me. I'm sure they just back charged the seller's paypal account for the $$$$. Hope it all works out for you! |
shipping 4 wheels across country isnt cheap.
I dont understand the logic of a buyer paying if the seller is at fault. Maybe someone needs to prosecute for fraud and have Ebay as a willing partner, since they allow it. |
I'm sure in that little window where you agree to their terms & conditions you absolve them of any complicity.
We've all been there - return them & get what you can or suck it up and sell them locally. |
Fleabays shipping guestimator is always wrong with a heavy or oddball item!
He prob. is a newbee and set his shipping price to the fleabay shipping calculator and then found out the actual cost when he took them to PO/UPS to get the REAL shipping price! This happened to me when I tried to ship a few light/bulky Olds parts. Fleabay calculator said $20 bucks.......PO said $75 UPS said $100 ! It was a large flat box 60 x 30 x 5 inches and weighed 10 lbs. It was a NOS olds plastic splash sheild. The newbee found out the hard way and not out to actually screw you IMO EXCEPT for the condition part. Thats why experienced fleabayers post "actual shipping cost"............... Fleabay protection plan is a JOKE! |
How about posting a link to the auction, maybe we could all learn something from the way it's listed.
|
Not so sure that if I return them Ill get anything for the initial shipping.
Ebay has no record of that being paid since it was put on my shipping account. |
Two years ago I bought a set of Pontiac heads on e-bay. Turns out the heads were cracked between valve seats. Returned to seller. He refunded cost of heads plus cost of shipping both ways. Altho dissaponted in the heads I gave him a positive feedback for being fair. I have mostly good luck buying on e-bay, but have been burned on a couple of small $ items. Mostly I beleieve the buyers are at the mercy of bad sellers. Sorry for you troubles, Cammer. Looked bad from the getgo but hindsight is always 20-20.

Maybe you will learn a lesson
Quote:
You had an opportunity to cancel the sale thru ebay You declined Several members advised you to walk away You declined You get what you pay for in life, some folks don't like what they get They blame the Seller .... If you want cheap wheels, go to a swap meet or a garage sale Jim |

As for your comment about getting cheap wheels, that was totally uncalled for. Ive been looking for 2K C5 wheels for 3 yrs, flea markets,Ebay,Craigs list,LS1tech etc. And,Yes I will blame the seller for misrepresenting the condition. |
You ignored the red flags
You ignored the red flags:
New ebay seller Shipping cost different than stated in item description after purchase Wheels priced below market cost (I am guessing) You got what you paid for - you just don't like it Learn your lesson and move on Don't learn your lesson and repeat Over and over again ..... Jim |
Have you contacted ebay on the initial shipping cost refund & what did they say?
Since the shipping wasn't paid thru paypal they may be able to use that as their out. It's possible they can't charge back to the seller what wasn't originally paid thru paypal. If they refuse the shipping refund sell 'em locally & recoup what you can. Some days you're the windshield, some days you're the bug! |

Maybe this is something we need to do more of..... One more reason to buy locally where you put your hands(and eyes) on it. I remember helping Bob Vidan ship some parts over 25 yrs ago(that was BC,before computers) to this day I still have not met him but would gladly do it again. |
You will have to pay shipping back to him to get your original amount back, and it must be delivery confirmed. I lost $20 to a scammer on a barrel that was cracked.
|
Quote:
I asked him several times why he only had 1 feedback and why the account was only 6 months old, asking if he had a previous account(and maybe lost it due to poor feedback) never once did he answer. I asked ebay to check into this also but they said they couldnt. |
The barrel I bought had 4 pics of some of the typical things M1 Carbine know to take pics of. When I got it it had HEAVY external pitting which was strategically hidden in the pics. I bid top dollar at about $320. When I complained about why he didn't disclose it or take pics of it, it was "oh, I kinda remember some sort of pitting. I didn't remember to mention it." The barrels have a gas cylinder underneath which has a small hole to aid in cleaning if you remove the cyl. It was cracked, welded up, painted and cracked again. "Oh, I didn't realize it was cracked. I'm old and can't see that well. I'm retired on a fixed income." Sending it back insured and delivery confirmation, which is required by ebay dispute resolution center, cost me $20 which you don't get back. A junk barrel had to go back insured.
