I tune in to watch the cars cross the block and see how much they sell for. Speed Channel shows every bit of nonsense except for the actual auction. It gets more cluttered every auction. I can't wait for Mecum. How do others on this forum feel?

They're selling the AUCTION not just the cars. ;)

I agree, the BJ auction sux. The Mecum auction will be MUCH better and it starts today!

I was at Barrett Jackson and I will tell you it was amazing! TV coverage is one thing, but live in person as a spectator is just wild.

The auction is a small part of the activity....

Highly Recommend you contact the Auction of your choice and find out when/where the next one is closest to your location and VOLUNTEER as a Driver etc.

Did that in 2012 for MECUM and had a blast.

Not my scene. The cars are over-restored and overpriced, usually. Not my type of people, either.

I can't stand watching it anymore on TV, so commercialized.

There are no commercials, no breakaways to Dick out at the staging lanes and the mind numbing April and the other guy she talks with. You actually see every car that crosses the block and you hear the auctioneers not the commentators.

Years ago when the televised car auctions were a new thing it was the best thing on television for me. The last couple years is getting really old for me. I flip off the channel after watching just a few minutes. Very boring hearing those guys talk about the same things about these cars car after car after car....year after year after year. No interest at all anymore.

these auctions have helped hype the price of musclecars right out of the stratosphere--out of the hands of folks like ourselves. to me, they have been the bane of the hobby.

Same here. We used to print out the list and highlight certain cars to watch for. I've watched maybe 15 minutes of it so far this year. Usually when a commercial is on whatever other show we're watching.

I like when they say "upgraded" when something was added to the car like tri-power or incorrect hood.

YEP! Watching Camaros, Chevelles and Mustangs gets boring very quickly. Sprinkle in a few over-restored pickups and there ya have it.

...and everything is a "custom" if it's not a restored original.
Unless it's their favorite brand, (Mustang, Camaro or Corvette) then it's modified to the owners tastes.

And don't get me started on "it's a Shelby, a Shelby, a Shelby......" :jumping:

I turned the auction on Wednesday night at 9:10 and as of
9:40 when I turned it off they had shown one vehicle go through, twenty minutes
of commercials and 5 minutes of mindless chatter.

I went once three or four years ago. I would liken it to going to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas for those of you from Texas. We also went to Russo & Steele, The Silver Auction at the indian reservation, and one other I don't remember which one. Every car guy/gal ought to go at least once if he/she can. Once was enough for me though. One thing that really surprised me was that the quality of a lot of the cars was not as high as I thought they would be. There WERE some very very nice cars but there was also a lot of Eastwood's paint where I thought stuff should have been re-plated, especially with the prices things were going for.

I my opinion a person would be far better off buying a car off of this site (or the "348-409" or "Moparts" site or whatever), or craigslist, or Ebay, than at one of those auctions. The nicer cars end up being overpriced when the hammer falls on them and you do not really know what you are getting. Every one of those auctions disavows any responsibility for what is being represented in the cars by the sellers.

x2 Walking around the tents for a couple hours always makes me appreciate what I have in my garage.

You don't see all that many Pontiacs go across the block at these auctions. That tells me one thing. Sellers don't like what they have and auction it off to get rid of it.

99% of Pontiac owners hang on to what they have because.... they love their Pontiac. :D

I quit watching B/J because of all the commercials and crap they dole out.

+1 on the lack of Pontiac coverage. I went through a couple of years of picking out every Pontiac and every 2nd gen F-body both Camaro and Firebirds. The lot # would be coming up and here they go to commercial. I get those cars are not as cool as stingrays to most but come on.

I would like to have a few beers with the guy Steve something with the thick black glasses though. Could be wrong but I think that guy is the real deal. I certainly can't correct him on much.

I don't think the've showed enough mustangs, vettes and Camaros though :gag:

He is the real deal. A few friends met him in Norwalk a few years ago and said that he was a great guy.

I don't care for B-J because I can't stand that pompous idiot Craig Jackson.

Aint that the truth, I am sure they make tons of money on the attendance and all the associated consumption that goes with that, plus the TV deal itself. The profit from selling the cars may eventually be secondary, or perhaps already is...

it might be a great place to sell cars, as you have a large, slightly intoxicated audience, but to buy cars its not too great an atmosphere. getting into a bidding war usually does not fare well for the buyer....

I saw decent pricing on some cars. For 25-40K, there were plenty of cars that I would consider. I don't believe that I could build a good car from a solid base for that price. And I don't think that I would want to.

It's a great show as well. I love my Pontiacs, but seeing an endless steam of pristine examples from all manufacturers is worth watching anytime. As long as the cars are changing.

Hey guys, I agree with most everything said here about the auction as to it being on TV... a huge waste of time for the few cars that pass the auction block. However, as for Barrett-Jackson itself I absolutely agree with Judge273 that "Live In Person Attendance" makes all the difference. This auction is an 'event' for the car lover and I believe you really have to be there to fully appreciate it. I spent last Wednesday at BJ Scottsdale (my third year) and for me it is less about the auction than it is just enjoying a smorgasbord, a feast if you will, of so many interesting and beautiful cars and, all in one place. My bell rings loudest with 60's and 70's factory muscle because I was there when these cars were new - graduated HS in 1967 - and to see them again like I remember them from the day is a total blast to my past. And I like the cars to be right! Now I don't know if a car can be over-restored... hmmmm, maybe the paint can be too pretty or perfect... but if the interior and under the hood (numbers matching) and chassis is correct and nice-nice, then I'm usually quite satisfied. As with many of us I can spot things that are not correct on Goats and that does bother me some but hey, I'm not buying anything. And speaking of buying... for me that is the only reason I catch BJ on TV and that is to see what the cars sell for. But I make use of the DVR; I record it and later play it back skipping the commercials and the cars I don't care about. Much of time the cars seem overpriced and I have to remind myself this is an auction (bidding frenzy), and too, many of these cars are near garage queens or museum pieces. Most certainly this is not the reality for the cars I own as I like to drive mine. Yes, BJ is commercialized but then it is after all a business... a really big business, and Craig and Steve do very well indeed. I have to admit I'm just a little bit envious.

I usually set the DVR to fast forward and watch it that way. If I see something that really catches my eye I put it on play and then back on FF. You can still see what things go for because it turns red when it sells. At least it cuts down on the BS at BJ.

Looks like Rick Hendricks will be having several car carriers headed to NC again. $1050000 for a 2014 corvette? Another mil for a 68 vette to name a few. I'll never know what it's like to have that kind of money.

if you're gonna watch the auction, do it via speed's stream. no commercials or stupid 'features' of **** nobody wants to see...

I think they should change the name from Barrett Jackson Auto Auction to Barrett Jackson Mustang Auction. I watched off and on every day it was on. I seemed every time I turned the channel to the auction, they were nothing but Mustangs going across the block. I'm fed up with this auction. The problem I've got is my cable provider does not carry the Mecum auction. I really like Mike Joy and Steve Magnante, they both seem to be fairly knowledgeable and I enjoy listening to them. So I guess I'm stuck with Barrett Jackson. If nothing else its entertaining.

Check with your cable provider to see if they have a package that includes the Velocity channel. Mecum is on Velocity.

A little is OK but 24/7 flats sux...IMO They have turned me away period....
Most of Speeds other shows are re-runs from back in 2006 or beyond or about imports..
Sorry...I don't care if I ever watch another car auction on TV..
I don't care how pretty or rare it is...I want to know/see how it performs..

Recorded on Direct TV and watched on the 3rd speed of fast forward. Tried 4th, but found that I would miss a Pontiac every now and then. I slow and watch most BOP offerings, but not much else. Watching that show live would be cruel and unusual punishment. Seemed the money was really flowing again.

I tried to watch the B-J auction but every time I turned it on there was either a mustang or a camaro or vette. I know GM made more cars then those 2 & the same for ford I know they made others cars other then the mustang. When the camara panned over the show field that was getting ready to come up I waited but never did see any of the the ones that were in the waiting area come up for sale. And the all the car that were for the charitieys 21 cars this year. All that is , is a chance for the rich to get a car & to get a tax right off. The more they bid the bigger right off. I also get real tired of seeing that little fool on stage with his sun glass's on like the suns out so bright he needs them inside. And craig Jackson sitting there with the only car with a reserve & making sure his is the only one while all the other cars have to take what the bid is wheather they lose or not. Seeing what they do on tv make me not want to ever go out & see it in person. It makes me wonder if I wanted to look at the cars I wanted to wouldn't be allowed because they would make me look at only the cars they want me to see. Plus I don't like the idea of having to pay an extra $ 500.00 just to sit up front to see the cars closer while they go through the auction. My money is as good as anyone elses but not at B-J because if you want good seats you have to pay out your ass to do so, or you get shi88y seats that make your ass go numb.

"Steve something with the thick black glasses" has an eye condition, which means he has to wear dark glasses because of all the bright lights. It's not because he thinks he's cool.

James, I don't remember what if went for, but man what a beautiful car, I got a lot of close up pictures of that one.

I agree with previous statements that you should attend at least once in your life. It really is a spectacle to behold. Craig is a creep of the highest order, but I will admit that business-wise, he is pretty damn smart. Lots of nice cars, but the quality of some of them are suspect.

Russo and Steele is run by a guy named Drew Alcazar, who used to be Craig's right hand, while still a very shrewd business man, he is not quite the creep that Craig is (by the way Craig HATES him for starting a competing auction and they battle each other through City of Scottsdale politics). I will say that Russo and Steele is not as big, nor as much of a circus as BJ is, and I think that the cars at RS are much better quality.

Hey chief, I wan't talking about Steve Magnante, I was talking about the so called persident of the B-J auction his name is steve to , he'e the one on the stage in the auctioneer's box all the time & even when he's inside being on camara being interviewed hes always wearing those sunglasses. He doesn't have any eye problem but I do know the Steve M. does thats why he has become so good at knowing what a car is when blindfolded. But the little jerk thats always next the craig is the one I'm talking about , he's craigs yes man now. Thats why if you look everytime craig says somethign he's nodding his head like a spring headed dog in the back window of an old merc. Just watch the next time you see a rerun on tv, he'll be there just nodding away with his head half way up craigs ,,,,,,well you know where.

i attended this event twice in 09 as a VIP
it was cool and all, but i could only stay so long in the auction tent area
1- LOUD
2- It's a rich's mans hobby, not for poorpers like me
3- It's so TVized it's not funny

although i do think EVERY Shebly made car was at this event this weekend

Steve Davis is the president of B-J. He does have a problem with bright lights and that is why he has to wear sun glasses indoors. The announcers explained all of this on Saturdays show. Just trying to clear up why he wears sun glaases in front of the camera's.

Fantasy entertainment is all it is for me, but I don't watch much. I do enjoy the classic 50's and 60's pickups that come through, which are few and far between.

It was interesting that BJ announced during the Westworld show that there would NOT be an Orange County BJ auction this year.

Instead BJ will be in RENO, NV during the Hot August Nights events.

Must be an excellent back-story to that “No Orange County BJA”…
