For those not going to Dayton--The 65 that PMD Never Built
From page 76 of Paul Zazzarine's 'Muscle Car Color History GTO 1964-1967', the article below tells that Pontiac intended to bring out Dual Quads to showcase the new Ram Air option in mid 1965. Instead they brought it out with the already available tri power carbs.
http://i617.photobucket.com/albums/t...uadarticle.jpg Since I already had the 'correct' afb's and a period correct Offy intake, why not build the car that PMD never build. Only roadblock would be a ram air pan for dual quads. After talking with my fabricator, he said No Problem! With only some minor adjustments and some additional cleaning, here are some pics: http://i617.photobucket.com/albums/t...ejoe/DSIDE.jpg http://i617.photobucket.com/albums/t...e/PASSSIDE.jpg http://i617.photobucket.com/albums/t...oe/RASCOOP.jpg http://i617.photobucket.com/albums/t...oe/ENGINE2.jpg http://i617.photobucket.com/albums/t...NGINE-PAN1.jpg http://i617.photobucket.com/albums/t...NGINE-PAN2.jpg |
That is about the coolest looking set up you can do and look stock.maybe grind off all the offy stuff and laugh while people are looking for part numbers
|
Nice.
|
That is pretty cool! I plan on something similar for my '64. Why not use the front fuel inlet and fuel lines/throttle linkage from Fab Craft? If Pontiac was gonna do it in '65 they would have used stuff that was already developed for the SD Program, right? I LOVE to see a Tri Power alternative! Good Job!
|
BAD ASS!
Jerry, Real Cool 65! I'm sure you can scare some folks with that ride! All that muscle and it looks like a column automatic?? HO exhaust manifolds? Great color also!
VERY WELL DONE! |
Looks great Jerry. Is the big surprise the dual quad ram air pan? I've never seen one that looked stock before. Kool.

Well done, Jerry!! Car looks great until you open the hood--then it looks even greater!!!
I'll bet it runs well. Looks like you used a TH350. |
Jerry, First Class Fabrication on the RAM AIR PAN.
Tell your pal, very nice work (and I see great fabrication stuff daily at work). Would you be willing to make a drawing/pattern of the AFB airhorn locations on the pan? Tom Vaught So how are you working the rear carb with the carb lever is right next to the throttle cable bracket? |
Yep the turbo 350 replaces the original factory 2 speed auto. And yes it's on the column. And this car came factory equipped with tri-power. I still have it sitting in my shop. I've been working on this for the past 8 months, and as of 10 pm tonight it looks like I may NOT be able to make it to the CoVention after all. Two weeks ago I had two guys coming with me and now both have dropped out. With my help I have to have someone to help loading and unloading the car. Unless my brother decides he can make the trip, I'll be sitting at home; all dressed up with no place to go.

Wow.
|
Beautiful Car Jerry!
Tom Vaught |
Very nice! What color blue is that?
|
Im sure I can speak on behalf of everyone here - Most would give up a limb to have a car like that. Enjoy!
|
Beautiful car Jerry! Was the ram air pan made from scratch or did you modify one of the repro metal pans?

Very Nice Jerry. Tom Vaught |
Did you find someone to go with you? Are you going?

Jerry,
Your idea for the dual quads is excellent whether or not PMD had actually contemplated putting them on the GTO. It sounds plausible to me that Pontiac could have had on the burner the plans to build dual quad 389 motors. Here they are almost two years after the 421 Super Duty motors. Remember in order for Pontiac to stay competitive, they had to take the racing model and bring it to the street. With the 1964 GTO a hit, why not push the envelope for 1965? As a side note; I have thought of turning my 1966 GTO into a Super Duty clone with Cameo Ivory paint and a blue interior. Kind of a "what if Pontiac had still been in racing by 1966" kinda theme. So, I say, run with your idea, it looks factory & cool to me. Don |
Looks great, Jerry.
Excellent concept and well executed. PM sent relative to Dayton. K |
Considering a build sheet is available for all 65 Pontiacs,i am confused how anybody can be mislead about how a car was built. Further more this car is not being represented as an original dual quad car. ANYWAYS,the car looks really cool, and is very well done. I love it.Nice job,Jerry!
|
I don't know if we will ever find a paper trail from Pontiac stating that they intended on having a dual quad option for the 65 GTO. I do believe however, that the idea had to of come up in conversations between the engineers. I know if I was working for Pontiac back then the idea of putting a 421 SD into a GTO would definitely have been on my mind.

As an option the GTO could have had a 421 in it from the get go. Think about that for a minute. Don |
Beautiful car! Nice craftsmanship on a great idea!
|
Thank you Jerry for sharing your work with all of us. I think it looks fantastic, and you deserve credit for creating something interesting for all of us to look at.
|
If you make another one don't waste your time on e-bay let me know how much. Car looks GREAT

They can age about any metal to look 50 years old or more in a few days. Nice job Jerry, looks super clean...bet its a blast to drive. |
The color is stunning, the rest ain't bad either.

How many tri-power automatics were made in '65? I have a weird fettish for those, very cool. |

Looks like we may be able to bring the car up to Norwalk after all, but I'm not counting on anything until the car is loaded and we're on our way. |
Fingers crossed you make it Jerry! I always like seeing your car run!
|
If we make it we probably won't run it this year due to the changes. But we'll definitely be parked in the pits. Wouldn't miss that part of it for the world!
|
Super nice job on the car and set-up. I have a 66 tri-power on my 67 Firebird, if you guys could only hear the "stories" and "comments" I hear about it. I stopped correcting people a long time ago. Why bother, their going to believe and think what they want any way.

UPDATE: I took the car to the Pontiacs at Pigeon Forge car show yesterday. Nice show with a great variety of over 200 Ponchos on display. After I got settled in the first person that dropped by was my friend Floyd Garrett of Floyd Garrett's Musclecar Museum in nearby Seirverville, TN. We talked for awhile and he asked if I would consider leaving the GTO in the museum for a while. With my new grandson coming, and my health declining I knew I wouldn't have much time for the car the rest of the year so decided to just drop it by when we left the show late yesterday.
So if you are in the area stop by and support Floyd. Or bring a boatload of money and buy him out of his museum. He's got to the point in his life where he's wanting to take off and travel. |
I am new to this post but read enough to laugh, love your car, the dual fours and really the hand fabricated Ram Air Pan.
Since it's been awhile I thought I would renew the rumor and because that someone is suspended. I know this is awful but I happen to slightly agree with Chuck Z. this was an idea on the table......if that starts a vicious rumor.............. well than let it be known I take full responsibility for my ourageous actions. |
Great car Jerry - it will be stunning in that collection for sure, but sometimes it's just nice to look out into the garage & see it sitting there.

I missed this post originally. Very nice job on the dual quad setup!
Back around 1985, I had an Offy 2x4 on my 65 GTO, but instead of Carters, I used a pair of 600 cfm Holleys (vacuum secondary) as they were $100 each at that time, brand new, from the local auto parts store. I made my own Ram Air pan using some 16 gauge steel, shaped it the same as the factory setup, and used black foam for a seal. It looked very factory, and I kept everything else under the hood looking stone stock. It ran VERY well. I ended up trying a ported 66 tripower setup (with Ram Air), then a Torker 1 with a 800 Holley spreadbore. But that darn 2x4 setup still ran the best (judging by the ol' butt dyno), and definitely drew a lot of gawkers at cruise nights. I had a few people ask if the 2x4 was an original setup (I ground off all the Offy script). At the time, there wasn't much info on muscle cars floating around, and there was a lot of misinformation about what was and wasn't available, such as rumors about factory 421's installed in 65 GTO's. http://smilieshq.com/smilies/rolleye0014.gif Again, very nice job on the 2x4 setup, and a great looking Ram Air pan! |
I've been to Floyd Garrett's muscle car museum. Nice museum with a lot of nice cars. Congrats for the invite of your car.
|
Beautiful 65 Jerry and that dual quad setup is great. I bet there's been a few double takes and dentures falling to the ground in the past year. LOL
Now, how can we go about getting a dual quad RA pan like yours? A PM is ok if you don't want to post details here. ;) |
