1963 w/ 4cyl. tach
 

On my 63, my in dash tach works, but reads about double the rpm it should, I am guessing that it is a 4 cyl tach? Is there a resister or something I can do wiring wise to get it to read correctly?

4 cyl 63 Tempest tachs are VERY rare. 8cyl tachs are available repro.

I only thought the in dash tachs came in the 326 HO and the on dash where the 4 cyl. But I am just talking. Those repop (64 GTO) tachs are the same but are cheap and light needs to be modified but do work.

Well to be honest, I'm not sure, all I know is the car has a factory "in the dash" tach, and it reads double what it should, either that or I have a 10,000 rpm street machine, lol

I just assumed it was a four cyl car and that is why the tach read double?

Stan, the tach came out of a 4 banger stick car!

Cool Jim, how do I make it read 1/2 of what it does? I'ts a little nerve racking running down the highway at 6000 grand, lol

Any chance the distributor is from a V8? Don't just look at the cap. Remove the cap and count the number of lobes on the cam inside that opens the points.

These early factory tachs are a sweet option but so are the clocks in this same space. I have decided to stay with a clock. The factory 90 degree sweep clocks are too difficult to read accurately. I do not have the same problem with my 65 GTO tach but it is a full sweep. FWIW

Yeah, TA, that is exactly what I have, as far as the dist being a V8 correct, the car now has a 400 in it with an HEI, that is why I was assuming that the tach was reading double.

I'm sure there is some way to correct it.

Can you post a pic of the clock? I've never seen one-always a blank in place of...

My car is in storage but I recall it looking rather unique like that also. I like it.

The official name is "Rally Clock"

Mine had a 326 V8 with tach. someone removed the tach(not me)stole it.I found a4cy tach looked the same to me at the time.

How rare are the clocks compared to a factory tach. I know the floor shifter was rare, only 10% of cars getting one, but the clocks and tachs seem just as rare also.

There are eight known rally clocks and six surviving factory tachometers in cars currently registered in the USA.

Internationally that total would be seven tachs. (If Poncho Villa has a tach)

A nice tach for the 63 dash is an "old" Dixco tach which is a drop-in fit and an easy hookup.

Yes! Mine has the factory tach. I also have an aftermarket tach on the steering column that has the 270 degree sweep needle. I prefer the accuracy of that one. :(

That's the one in my black car. It's an old Sun unit with a 3-64 date on the back. Yes it fits EXACTLY in the dash pod.

I'm surprised nobody called BS on my statistics back there.

The fact that they were allowed to stand shows that there probably isn't much data to the contrary.

I kind of pulled those numbers out of my assumptive :D nature, based on many (15+/-) years of observations and keeping my own unofficial tally of things like manual trans cars, tachs clocks A/C etc. I think they're in the ballpark.


I'm curious about the history of your cars? how long you've had them and prior owners, stuff like that to see if they are cars that are known to my unofficial research or new discoveries... (PM sent)
