537 CI 4th times a charm

1 Attachment(s)
Well if anybody remembers me having problems with a 535 build I had done by a professional (multiple problems), It's been about 3 years and alot of money later. I needed a whole new rotating assembly, bore it .010 and custom pistons. I assembled it myself this time. Bolted on the tiger heads, the old 264-270 roller cam and my homebuilt low profile intake manifold with 1050 dom. It is still running rich and I have not optimized the timing yet, just a conservative tune until I get some street miles on it. Later this fall I'll fabricate a new sheetmetal intake with 2-800 edelbrock carbs that I hope will make an improvement. I put it on my chassis dyno and check out the results and what do you think?

Holy crap!!

Over the counter tigers?

Photo of said intake?

60man 08-12-2013 12:15 PM

Nice numbers....what's your CR,...valve lift...fuel ? Just curious..

Tigers are good..not a head slam to others..all is good.
Mine are out of box "Race heads"..not CNC ported..just port matched.
At my present lift they flowed 412....will be taking lift up to .9XX on next build.

Blued and Painted 08-12-2013 12:31 PM

Looks like the A/F is not that far off.
I've heard of so many tuning problems out of the e-carbs. I cant imagine running two. IMO.

The compression is 12 to 1, 185 lbs. of cranking compression cold, .799 lift at the valve, 1050 dominator, fuel is Shell pump premium with 3 gals. of 110 VP just to be safe, This is in a factory fuel tank full of fuel, so the 110 dilusion of VP is not all that great. There are 4 mufflers on it also, 2 Dynatechs at the headers, 3 1/2" exhaust pipe and 2 Borla XR-1's out the back. I did not update the run information at the top of the dyno sheet so some of it is incorrect.

60 man - Dave Wilcox ported the heads and we never flowed them but I know they flow over 420, maybe 440, I imagine he could port a little further but not alot. The port opening is 2 7/8" x 1 3/8".

Steve

p4msi1 08-12-2013 06:28 PM

Blued, I love the challange to tune carburators. Those 2 edelbrocks will tune right up and I hope to make big power with them. just hope my junk stays togrther.

Mr. Wilcox is good !! 12-1 should be easy on head gaskets..;) nice flow numbers...is that at your /799 lift? Mine were flowed by Bill Cerrelli and Jack Gaydosh..
FWIW: two 4150 Holley's (950) were worth 42 HP over two modified 750 AFB's...on a Gutsram..back to back dyno pulls.
Yours a badd arse street car??..ought to fly..
Good luck...

Half-Inch Stud 08-12-2013 08:12 PM

Would More advance be worth trying?

p4msi1 08-12-2013 08:47 PM

60man, Dave actually told me the heads should flow about 440-450 but I do not know at what lift. He also said I needed a .800 lift cam because that is what it would like. So, I did not worry about the flow #'s and just followed direction.
Also, I am going with the 800 cfm edelbrocks because of packaging under the hood. I'm hoping for another 40+ HP over the single 1050. If that happens I'll just enjoy it for awhile and look for more later.
It is a street car and it probably will get a roll cage this winter.

Steve

60man 08-12-2013 08:54 PM

I hear what youre saying....enjoy the ride.;)

p4msi1 08-12-2013 08:57 PM

Half-inch, yes advancing the timing will probably net some more power but for right now I am staying conservative on the tune so as not to hammer the bearings and am enjoying street driving it. This is the first high compression motor I ever had and need to learn it.I have 3.50 gears in the 9" and last week installed 255 60-15 M/T drag radials, man this thing really flys now, at least for me it does.

Brut4s, I may have a few pics.

p4msi1 08-12-2013 10:08 PM

Brut4s, I'll be trying to make sure that most street cars see the middle picture. This car still has power steering, tilt steering, power windows, power antenna, power brakes (kinda) and full stereo system but I did pull the A/C system out.

Blued and Painted 08-13-2013 10:11 AM

Uh Oh, another Bird with oversized hood scoops. :D

I always liked the 67-8 but the 69's are looking better every day. NIce Ride!

brut4s 08-13-2013 12:29 PM

Very Nice! Have fun and good luck!

wakesupremo 08-13-2013 01:27 PM

looks the absolute dogs kahunas to me. Very similar to my '69 convertible although Mine has now been reduced to a 'built' 400 as I have had so many problems getting a 469 built over here in UK. Lots of money and bullsh*t from engine builders.

Silver Judge 08-13-2013 06:36 PM

Impressive HP#s :)
You're gonna need some drag radials to drive the monster on the street
Love that super400 hood too !

What's up with the ft-lbs readings on that dyno sheet?
Don't see any values above about 522 ?

p4msi1 08-13-2013 06:52 PM

Wake, don't feel left out, we certainly have our engine building problems, too. Remember this is the 4th time this engine has been assembled.

p4msi1 08-13-2013 06:57 PM

Silver, last friday I put M/T drag radials on it. Also, 522 is the peak torque and it went steadedly down from there, unless you have a download problem, I can read the whole sheet.

p4msi1 08-13-2013 07:06 PM

60Man, What is your engine combo?

Bill Bolin 08-16-2013 10:36 AM

Cajun Man......I hope to see you racing with the Outlaw Pontiacs soon!!!

se428bandit 08-16-2013 11:03 AM

Looks like a nicely optioned '69 firebird. Is it a warwick blue car?

Steve Barcak 08-16-2013 01:01 PM

nice numbers, nice car. enjoy!

It WAS a Tiger headed 505 IAII......broke a rod last month..
Was strickly a race motor...14.8 CR....large SR cam.....857 lift..
Gaydosh has it now for the 541 build..and have head inserts done..tired of doing head gaskets.

wakesupremo 08-16-2013 01:25 PM

This thread is way above me as I have been told that a +0.060 overbore is too much. How much are you guys overboring and what is 'special' about the blocks etc that you're using? I am finding this incredibly interesting after the problems I've encountered.

Pitch 400 08-16-2013 02:00 PM

They're using the IAII blocks. Check out All Pontiac.com.

wakesupremo 08-16-2013 03:36 PM

Thanks. I'll do my research.

p4msi1 08-16-2013 06:03 PM

Bill Bolin, I figured I need to step it up before going to the outlaw Pontiac race. Its still has no roll bar in it but in a couple of months I'll solve that and pass tech. Are you racing? Hey does Tony let B-Boy drive the Goat?

p4msi1 08-16-2013 06:10 PM

60Man, are you loosing the head gaskets at 3-5 and 2-4 cylinders? The last time I saw the Dirty Bird heads, Dave install a copper insert in those areas I guess that is what you are doing also. Is the 541 more street oriented?

p4msi1 08-16-2013 06:13 PM

SE 428, Because of the options, that is the reason I have not really done too many racing type modifications, but its getting a rollbar soon and if its really nice to be, I'm also mini-tubbing it.

p4msi1 08-16-2013 06:16 PM

Se428, Light Stellar metallic blue, I think its an old Hyundai color. (See, I'll do anything to increase the performance of my car).

This caught my eye. It does look like an identical color to my Tempest (an '04 Hyundai Santa Fe color :o). It does make it faster, though.

Jim, I guess the "cat's out the bag" on our performance secret coatings. Pontiac tough with Hyundai stuff.

Yep.....loosing seal between two center cylinders....75-80 passes. doing the same insert I assume.... 541 is going to be another race motor...little more CR, & bigger cam with 4-7 swap. The GP is not a street car..a back half car with tin work..
The old 60 will be my street ride...:D

FWIW: the 505 made 719 pdft torque..!!

p4msi1 08-17-2013 10:35 AM

719 lbs. torque-----Brutal. What intake and carb?

60man 08-17-2013 12:35 PM

Using a Gutsram with dual Holley 4150's/850's with race fuel.
Ironic thing is we were trying to lower TQ as I was having trouble hooking up
with 60 Ventura. Go for HP...... will say it moved that 4,100 # sled decent.

Bill Bolin 08-18-2013 11:30 PM

I should have my car at the next race...Sept 8th at Mason Dixon. And NO, Tony drives his own car.

Not sure 60 will be ready..or I will be ready for a 14 second pass...I hope:rolleyes:

C'mon up Cajun man..;)

Bill and 60man, maybe I will but spectate only. Will probably drive the Trans Am which make almost as much HP as the 537. Prochargers are great. Check out the T/A, just finished it in Feburary.

Bill Bolin 08-19-2013 05:34 PM

Steve....Tony says you can have 3 and the kick!!! LOL ;) Bring it up to Mason Dixon and let it breathe!!!!

p4msi1 08-19-2013 08:49 PM

Hey, 23 and the kick and we got a race. See you there.
