oil pressure sensor location
 

My GTO came with the oil pressure line located here:

The gauge seems to dance between 80 and 100 PSI (gauge could be broken).
I've got a mechanical autometer oil pressure I want to use (instead of the current one) with a copper line instead of the plastic one and was just wondering if that's a good location.

there is a plug next to the distributor...that is the best most accurate location.
I have a guage running from both sites. seems the factory location at the oil filter sending unit reads a little higher than the hole next to dist...about 10 psi or so.

Mine picks up to the drivers side of the distributor hole in the block.

Have mine up by the distributor also.

On the filter housing is before the oil filter. Next to the dist is after the filter.

Anyone have a pic of the dist location handy? I would like to have a sender for my gauge, and a low oil pres. switch for a light/elec. choke.

I put the mechanical oil pressure connection at the dist hole. reads a few pounds lower than at oil
filter at warm idle.(had 17 at dist. location and 20 at oil filter when a swapped them).
- Use ONLY copper type line for a mechanical gauge!!!!!!

For piece of mind I put the factory type idiot light sender back in oil filter housing with stock
wiring. Car has idiot lights and like all them functional as well.

The plug in front of the date code. The square socket to remove it is 5/16".

I've encountered quite a few of those engines, one very recently. I've never actually talked to someone who painted it that way to find out what their logic in thinking was... Amusingly enough all have been Pontiac 350s.

Got it that way.. painting the engine is on my list, there's just too much other things to complete first..

I know what you mean, there. My car actually came with the wrong oil filter mount. (It's not angled, so the instructions for changing the oil filter include "dent the filter with a hammer so it clears the frame.") I've got the correct part, but haven't got around to it yet.

hmm.. at least some previous owner didn't dent the frame to clear the oil filter.. :)

That square drive factory plug may be tight. I thought a gun had gone off when mine finally broke loose.

I run off the filter adaptor on my GTO and off the block on my Grand Prix. Both have done fine but I prefer coming off of the top of the block, very accurate readings.

I have a question does anyone have a photo of the delivery location available? I want a gauge sender and an oil pressure switch for the light/electric choke. Pgsharp

What do you mean by “ delivery location”?

On the factory filter adapter the 1/8” pipe threaded hole where the idiot switch goes into is right off the pump output.

The hole that’s plugged off on the top of the block on the drivers side as in these previous photos here is on the output side of the oil filter.

If it’s the original square drive plug do not attempt to remove without soaking it with thread penetrant first and heating up - it is very easy to strip the square drive.

I have never had any luck in a car getting these out with heat unless I had a Oxy torch to use, and even then you need to use foil to keep stuff from catching fire.

I find that a big flat nose tapered punch that is just small enough to fit in the square and a good size ball peen hammer is the way to go.

6 to 8 hard it’s will distort the plug enough to jar the threads free and then they come out.

The location of the oil pressure sensor varies through vehicle make, model, and engine. In many engines, the oil pressure sensor is located close to the oil filter, typically threaded into the engine block or oil filter housing.In some setups, the oil pressure sensor is located near or at the back of the intake manifold.

Pontiac motors from the factory regardless of body style have always had the sensor/ or sender on the oil filter adapter.

You must be thinking of the mid 70s when Pontiacs could be had with a SBC or a 403 Olds motor.

That pipe plug removal is tuff. I tried making a square adapter out of a 3/8" extension. Even slight rounded sharp corners. Didnt work. Someone suggested getting Snap on socket specifically for those plugs years ago. Then I got a compression driver, strike with ball peen hammer. Soak with penetrating oil.Works for me.
