master cylinder paint
 

Is a 69 gto master cylinder(power disk brake) painted or cast. The Restoration Guide says cast in 68 and painted black in 70 but does not directly mention 69. Anyone use cast gray paint by Eastwood or VHT.

I would think you would want to paint/coat it with something otherwise the bare casting is going to rust quickly. My poor memory tells me it should be a cast gray.

Anyone use Eastwoods diamond satin coating or cast gray manifold paint for these (Question mark button broken)

There was a 10K mile, original owner 69 RAIII GTO at Dayton.
MC was definitely black

Not saying this is better than anything out there but I'm very happy with offerings from www.KBS-COATINGS.com. IIRC this company is headed by ex-POR coatings guy?

Thanks all. Pic from Brians sure looks black to me. Just want it to look factory correct. Just bought a repro from PY . Looks very nice. Gold anodizing on cap is sort of mottled with non-uniform finish. Wouldnt mind keeping that cast iron look without turning brown from rust.

Can you tell me who owns that car? Or pm the info to me? I did not make it to Dayton.

I think they used both black and bare, maybe a plant or a late early thing. I know I saw enough bare ones in the 80's in bone yards to be pretty certain they came that way.

Or maybe the black ones were SR units painted to look nice in the box

Do not know who owned the car. The owner was never there. His friend brought the car who is a member of the POCI.

He told me that his friend only drove it the first couple years and then just parked it. His friend had no interest in shows so he asked if he could bring it.

The guy that brought it is wearing the jeans next to it in the picture. Darrell Davidson (notime here) had the car parked next to him. He might know who it was.

It was a very well preserved car. If I remember right he cleaned it, changed the fluids, battery and lower seal and that was about it. He said it was sitting so long the clutch was frozen. They keeped rocking it and it broke free.

Looks like black phosphate to me not black paint. Interesting how it looks to have been plated before they machined the unit. Look how rusted it is on all the flat machined areas.

Great picture. Looks like a time capsule. Someone else had mentioned to me that some of the SR units got black paint to keep from rusting while sitting on the shelves.

Well if you want a factory look I can tell you that my 69 LeMans had light surface rust the day I picked it up in Dec of 1968 from the dealer. BTW that master lasted into the early 90's with regularly flushing once a year and the rear wheel cylinders lasted until last year.

At this point it looks like it could go either way.
I prefer bare by bead blasting and keeping oiled to prevent rusting.

I may go that route as well. Keep a light coat of oil on it. Some Camaro owners suggested this as well.

The oil to use if you are going to oil it is called Gibbs Lubricant, check it out!

Is it safe on gold anodized surfaces. I used to use Ballistol, but it will dis-color or damage yellow colored metals or coatings. I used it on my brake boaster and it did discolor some of the anodizing.

I ended up using the VHT cast gray paint. It looks great. 2 light coats. Hard to tell the paint from the regular cast iron finish.

That is Denny's car. Yes hes the original owner, only thing changed was fan belt and battery and he still has both and brought them with to the show. We hung out quite a bit at the show and saw him last weekend.
