Furlough

Anybody else furloughed?

mods please not this is not a political thread.

Im thinking about jumping ship, lately all the layoffs and every year the furlough threats are getting to be unbearable

Mr Twister 10-01-2013 01:42 PM

I am an excepted employee. I have to report. Most of the people at my facility are still here. A few GSA, and NLRB folks got sent home from what I can tell.

69goatboy 10-01-2013 02:10 PM

Not furloughed, but us salaried slobs had to take a 3% pay cut a while back.
But we should get it back soon.

Good luck.

Half-Inch Stud 10-01-2013 06:50 PM

Not furloughed.

Seems the group I'm in has been deemed "on the Program, and critical to the mission" we talked about getting shirts that say " I am an essential asset".

but; I have to socialize my "near-term activity plan to the leadership, so they know xactly what they are getting for their money.

at LEAST we can generate some humor. For now.

((((going to a last day lunch tomorrow, between engine pulls))))

Captainofiron 10-01-2013 08:37 PM

Way back when we use to support shuttle we were considered mission critical so we wouldnt shut down, but now...

We were asked to safe all of our systems and get out by noon.

I even had to unplug my little refrigerator

455firebird1969 10-01-2013 10:57 PM

I'm essential and have to report for work, but my pay sheet is tracking it is a furlough days this week. So next pay period I will be short on pay! Supposedly I'll be getting the backpay later! but no one knows when?

I'm just happy to be working.

Lol I'm sorry as a honest hard working American you guys need to get a real job

arbys 10-02-2013 07:21 AM

I do wish all the furloughed workers the best but I do wish that so many of you weren't "insulated" from the real job world which the rest of us had to experience every day, every year.

Only someone who has never worked for a government agency would think that we are insulated from the rest of the world. Layoffs, benefits being slashed (if being given at all), budget cuts, and dumb%() managers are all part of every job today, regardless of where you work.

I served 26 years of active duty, five years as a contractor, and now I'm training IET soldiers how to maintain a CH-47 helicopter on the third shift (0100-0900), and you think you are above me, because you are "hard working and honest"? In what branch of the military did you serve? How many deployments have you made? How many holidays have you spent away from your family? When is the last time you flew all night in crappy weather, searching for a fellow American who will perish unless rescued?

Please elaborate on why you think a government worker needs a "real job".

arbys 10-02-2013 12:19 PM

I can't speak for thadeal4real but as for myself I don't place the military in the same classification as the everyday government worker.

Yeah, please explain.

Back to topic - Sorry for your worries, guys. Nobody should have to worry about their jobs.

there really isnt a way to work in the space industry that isnt government funded/supported

even when they say commercial or private space, it just means they are providing a service to NASA or DOD or NOAA or some other federal acronym

zephyrracer 10-02-2013 10:31 PM

Just want to say I hope some day people will wake up and see government isn't working for we the people it works for itself, everyone should be on the same playing field and the same rules, everyone should pay their share and the government as well, as a private citizen it erks my ass when government workers get an increase in living standards mine goes down !!! all retirement should be in a locked box and government hands off that's why we are in the trouble we are in. I feel for you but realize this government is turning people into surf and sloth basically slaves. I should close with what I have just said as I could expound on whats going on in this country and best not but I say this THE NEWS MEDIA IS PUBLIC ENEMY #1 AND SOCIALISM HAS TAKEN CONTROL OF THE NEWS MEDIA AND OUR GOVERNMENT.

Stop being pawns and take care Gregg

rexs73gto 10-02-2013 10:59 PM

Our goverment has not been working for the public for a very long time. The only one the gov. cares for it theirselves, & how much money they can get in their own pocket. I truly believe that all the sen. & congress should be paid what ever the national avg. person makes & then we will see how many would really want to serve the people who vote for them. NONE. They only get into politics to see how fast they can become millionares. It's not by the people , for the people , it's not all for me & none for you & hope you put me in for another term so I can show you how much I can do for me. Term limits, no more lifetime terms because it turn into a joke because they don't work for anyone but themselves. Why is it I work my entire life & when I need my social security I get enough to be below poverty?? A senetor makes $ 147.000 a year & only work when they want to.Everything they want ^ then some. I never got to vote if I got a raise but in the worst times the gov. can vote to get a raise any time they want. A joke. I have gotten 1 raise in my SS in 4 years when they have gotten more in raises in 1 years then I recieve total. I say get rid of all of them & start over with all new. Lets get these lazy assholes out & find some that will look out for the public & not just themselves. Then next we stop supporting the rest of the world & all the countries who we just give & give money to who don't like us & call us rotten names, FU@& them all stop giving all our moeny to people who hate us & give it to our own who love us. Close the boards & if they don't like it , tell them to kiss our a&&. Why do we have to be the country who pays the rest of the world. Feed the hungry, NO feed the USA.

No kidding! I have a degree in Electrical Engineering, and there would be almost no place to practice my trade if it wasn't for the Defense (my first 8 years) and NASA/Space (my subsequent 20 years) industries.

Most of the criticism of elected officials is probably valid, but the overwhelming number of federal employees, and federal contractors, are hard working Americans, and don't deserve the bad rap.

Social Security used to be in a locked box Johnson put it the general fund and at the time there were many people paying in, now there is no Social Security box its just borrowed money and very few pay into it, if this money was in a locked box and payed interest on investment it would be a good deal, 401k good deal you get a return for putting your money at risk, pensions are a good deal if the money is set aside and invested for a good return, there are many pensions that are being paid out of the general fund and not out of a pension security so when say an seiu member gets a raise or retirement pay goes up even though the market and private sector can't afford it then the private sectors quality of life goes down.

Hope this helps you if you need more explanation I will be glad to do so Gregg

I thought it was only 11 million lol.

I'm not hire-able anyway. Being a non-felon, college educated, drug and alcohol free, childless, clean cut, hard working white male I do not fit the new American mold. ;)

LOL

I generally agree with most of your points but the part that I bolded is just not true, all of the civil servants that I work with have had their wages frozen for years now, and the contractors get a 1 to 2 % cost of living increase per year

Hi I have no problem with anyone getting a raise, if the private industry can support a raise it's fine even in economic turn downs no one here is holding a gun to anyone's head and making them purchase their product, if people stop buying the private industry product private industry will cut cost and pay to stay in business on the other hand not all but most gov workers get raises and we have no recourse but pay. the real problem is when the gov worker retires after 30 yrs 50 years old 55 years old 25k a year for health care payed that is roughly 5k a year more than the private industry insurance for the same coverage and 5k of that is donated to Democratic Election over charging the public ( theft ) and along with the 25k health care what ever their retirement package is , public workers need to retire like the rest of us and retire at 65 if they can afford to retire earlier and on their own dime like the rest of us that's fine just saying the public cannot afford the lavish benefits of the government, we pay so much our government it is hard for a lot of people to save for themselves that's why I say all retirement should be lock boxed.

Take Care out their Gregg :usa2:

PonchoV8 10-05-2013 02:51 PM

This is DoEnergy and DoDefense territory. I'm sorry but we just can't afford to keep creating jobs for people so they can build develop and build drones to spy on us. :)
Yeah, I know it's a lot more than that, but what I'm really saying is that I feel for those having their employment challenged, but I think the bubble of government contractors and companies is way over due for deflation.

rexs73gto 10-05-2013 05:42 PM

You say the gov. workers don't get raises but your wrong they do get a bonous each years that is equale to or usually much better then the raise they would be getting, so mo raise is really needed. Also most all of the gov. workers make more then the avg. priviet worker makes anyway. There are very few & I say again very few if any gov. worker that starts out on min. wage & most start at what some are making after 20 years of hard work & no benefits. They (gov) workers also get several days off each year for the sillyest reasons. Plus they get extra paid days just because, with the best medical, dental & eye care around. I know when you get use to having everything just handed to you you want more but the gov. worker should have to work the same way everyone else has to , & only make what an avg. person on the outside does not 100% more then everyone else. The Navy guy who shot up the Navy base proberly found out that the guy next to him who worked for the gov. found out he was making 5 times as much as him for doing the same job & thats what made him go off. He realised how much he was getting screwed & took it out on the SPOILED gov. workers.

arbys 10-05-2013 05:58 PM

IIRC all the furloughed workers will get their back pay. Isn't that like a paid vacation?

PonchoV8 10-05-2013 07:08 PM

State government in Tn is pretty low pay. What they do get is job security. They also get more holidays than private and lots of sick time. And sick time can be banked until retirement when it can be converted to vacation, but not on a 1 to 1 ratio. It's still something most private firms don't get.

How costly is that? Furlough the workers and get nothing in return. Yep, that's our government.

beertracker 10-05-2013 07:57 PM

If this isn't a political topic I don't know what is! This is sensitive topic to the millions out of work people in the private sector who have no pay check or hopes of getting one. I can tell ya right now who is NON-ESSENTIAL; the 435 house members, the 100 senators, the 1 non-essential VP and the 1 liar in chief. If you want to stop this silliness just take THEIR pay checks away and see how soon the problem is SOLVED!

rexs73gto 10-06-2013 02:05 AM

They should all have term limits so we don't have to deal with the same liers & cheats for no longer then we do for the head leader in graft. Also they shoudn't be able to vote on any raise they may get. Also lets see how they will get along with making what the avg. person in America makes, no more then $ 35K then we that get the money we put in would be able to live a decent life on the money we should be getting.I worked my entire life & yes I said my entire life, I've worked since I was 11 years old & now I get the priviliage of making enough to be in the below poverty level for that & I vet to boot. Now the gov. can't even make a simple decision to give me a decant health care option without it costing me more money so if I pay for it then, I also get the priviliage to not eat for 3 days a week to be able to afford it. But every gov. worker gets what I can't afford for free & then some.

Formulabruce 10-06-2013 02:33 AM

The "DC" Government workers have got 23% AVG pay increase since 2009. These folks get 72% of their healthcare premiums paid as well. ( these are facts).
These are NOT the contractors, and "outside the beltway" Government employees.
There is a difference and its easy to lump them all into one.
