Help Determine Value 1968 Tempest

Went and looked at a 1968 Tempest today. First 5 of vin reads 23537. Seller was asking $3000 for the car and $800 for a 12-bolt rear end.

The car has a 350 Pontiac, none-HO and a powerglide trans. The car runs and idles smooth, owner says the transmission works as well. Car has A/C that appears to be all there and has the entire interior still with the car, Fiero seats instead of the Tempest seats however. The car needs some floor work but it comes with replacement pans for both sides. Also needs a trunk pan. Exterior wise the car appears very straight and I could not find any bondo with my magnet. It will need some lower fender patches and lower quarter work as well as full paint.

So I offered him $2500 for the car and the rear and I think we are very close. What do you guys think of a deal like this and the actual value of the car? I would be buying the car to fix up and use as a summer DD, not a full resto or anything like that.

Thanks in advance!

I think $2500 would be a pretty good deal.

The body and interior of this car is not that bad but the frame is shot if i recall. looked at it years ago.

MD79TA 11-11-2013 07:49 PM

I think the body on the one I looked it is just as clean looking at those pics. A/C is important to me as well

Well my 2 cents -get it as cheap as you can -if the rear is a chevy 12 bolt posi try to include it-make a lowball offer for the package -i dont think theres a line out the door for that car these days in that condition-meaning only a pontiac guys gonna love it and we pontiac old car guys are very small group ( if he says no -leave your contact info and -let me know if you change your mind) and youll spend a decent penny on the body not to mention suspention ect ect ect

That's basically where I left it. He has my number and knows my price. The 12 bolt is a spare rear end, the Tempest has its stock one still. with the rear included in my $2500 offer I am basically spending $1500 for the car and a grand for the rear.

I talked with this guy over a year ago and decided to end my conversations then. Nice gentleman on the phone, but that car is not for me.

I went to look at that when it was listed for $1200. It's considerably worse in person than the pics show. The pictures seem to be quite old. Interior is totally trashed with mildew. If I remember right dash has radio area cut out, and some dents or holes drilled the area around the column I think. Fenders (what I wanted) were much more rotten in person than they looked in the pics. Hood was bent, trunk completely wasted, frame rotted. Valance looked ok I think. No idea how he got the pictures to look that much better than the car does in person. I looked at it about 2 years ago ...I think it's still there. I'd take it for about $500.

I took a bunch of pictures of it ...can't find them now.

The Boss 11-12-2013 09:16 AM

That car has been on Craigslist here in CT for as long as I can remember. I can't imagine spending as much time as he has reposting it and answering the phone calls on it. :noidea:

MD79TA 11-12-2013 09:41 AM

Well, at least I know that one is not worth looking at! The interior looked really nice in the pictures too..

dataway 11-12-2013 12:24 PM

I drove about 2 hours to look at it and was totally surprised by the interior ...looked like it had been pulled out of a lake, or left in the rain with the windows open for six months. Black mildew everywhere, roof must be leaking and letting moisture accumulate inside. I'm sure under the carpet the floor is gone. I think it has a see through trunk and swiss cheese rear bumper.
The guy that owns it is confined to a wheel chair and has an unusual acting, foreign female caretaker or companion. The whole experience was unusual :)

LOL, unusual is an appropriate adjective. at one point during my inspection of the car the "foreign female caretaker or companion" began beating the nose of the car with her fist while shouting REAL METAL in a thick eastern European accent . My assumption was that this is a common sales pitch back in the old country. Not wanted to offend, I inspected the area she was hitting and confirmed her assessment of the metal. Thankfully, she ceased this bizarre behavior after in inspected the area.
