A FEW PICS of OUR 43K MILE 1964 TRI-POWER GTO
 

I took some pics of our 64 GTO yesterday and I thought I would post them here. The car is all #s matching and has 43K miles on it. It spent the vast majority of its life in CA. I was told its 85% original paint but I cant be sure of that...it looks like it very well could be. It was clear coated about 3 years ago and looks great I think. It runs and drives great. I would think the Alamo Beige and Portugal Gold two tone paint is pretty rare. I will be listing the car in the classifieds after the holidays but wanted to show it off a little bit first.

It was on ebay once or twice a few years ago as I saved some pics of the engine bay showing the rare Vacuum Tri-Power unit.
It has been cleaned up nicely and is a very unique combination of colors and drive train!

Pontiac Engine Log shows this 1964 77J to be very rare. Only 693 were produced.

Yeah that's the way it looked when I got it....I repainted and detailed the engine. I just couldn't stand it not looking as clean as the rest of the car. Maybe I ruined the patina as they say on Pawn Stars but it sure looks a heck of a lot better!

V E R Y C L E A N, Heads-up/seat belt buckles go on the inboard side of the seats

Those look like the Autokrat seat belts for 1964. I almost bought this car on ebay the last time around. I like the odd color combinations myself. I have never seen floor mats like that. So stock looking, yet they aren't.

Thanks...the buckles are on the inboard side of the seats. I believe they are original to the car (I would assume dealer installed)...they are marked AutoCrat but the tag is so old the date of MFG is not legible. They certainly aren't recent additions...

I put the floor mats in it to protect the original carpet...they are made by Legendary Auto Interiors.

Thanks guys...the car was sold was sold on ebay about 3 years ago out of a Costa Mesa CA (it was part a Hollywood producers private collection for 23 years) then it went to Tupelo MS were it was displayed at the Tupelo Auto Museum for a couple years and then we bought it several months ago.

Curious what the small holes would have been for on the inside door jams?

Also, any chance of posting a couple big clear pics of that rare automatic transmission kick down switch and bracket mounted at the left rear of center carb?

Well I didn't know what that switch was for....I thought it had to do with the vacuum operated Tri-Power set up. Our 65 doesn't have it but its a 4spd so that would make sense... We are on our way out of state for Thanksgiving...I will get some when I get back.

The holes in the door jams are from dealer installed Ziebart rust protection. I am not sure if in 64 they left holes like that or put plastic plugs in them...I had a ultra low mile 75 45HO TA that had had it done and it had plastic Ziebart plastic plugs in the holes...I would probably think they didn't have them in 64 but I am not sure.

My '74 Chevelle was Ziebarted (I'm the original owner...or my mom was, anyway).

I believe the plugs are either black or a reddish/brown on mine.

I have seen them in yellow and black...maybe they had colors to match the car? Also the ones I have seen have had the Ziebart logo and name on them. It seems the plugs started showing up in the mid 70s though...so I am not sure if they had them in the mid 60s though.

As i recall you would take your car back for a respray after a specified time. These were a type of check up of sort. There was a no-rust warranty. Plugs could have been swapped then to newer style. :2cents:

My '66 Lemans which was white was ziebarted when new. The plugs were white. It helped and didn't help. Areas that didn't have good coverage rusted like hell...

I remember this car on EBay, too. I wanted it then; I want it now!

My brother looked at that car in the early 80,s. It was in Akron. Was going to buy it as his first car. He actually drove it.Ran good,even though the 3/2,s were blocked off.Really nice car,he just could not do the 2-speed thing.Looking back,should of bought it and put a 4 speed in it.Its one of the best 64,s I have seen to this date!

There's a few cars that I'd like to own but for one reason or another couldn't or didn't act on. For the time being I wait and watch to see what comes around. Thankfully I enjoy every year GTO, they all have great design elements unique to there time.

A four speed conversion would make the car a performer, but would destroy its uniqueness and wow factor. This car is so weirdly optioned with that column shift 2 speed that it pretty much has to stay that way, IMO. If I owned the car, I might swap in a 200R4 and bag the ST300, though. It would still look correct, but be drivable on the open road. It would be a shame to modify this survivor in any way, though, IMO. Too rare, too unique. Heck, it's almost as rare as a '64 Tempest or LeMans that hasn't been cloned into a GTO!

First of all any old classic and/or muscle car is "rarely" used for daily use these days so driving a 2 speed automatic on occassion is no big deal. Plus you get to feel just how it was designed to operate back in the 60's.

Second, to cut open a virgin floor and weld a bracket on the frame of an Original Rare 64 GTO like this would be a CRIME! This would also hinder the value now and in the future.

When I first saw this car on ebay a couple years ago I mentioned putting the 2 spd. shifter on the floor with console, but even that idea would be wrong.

Wow...I am glad your brother didn't get it and cut it up. The car still runs great and the 3/2s work great...I can't imagine why they were blocked off then. I would question if you were sure it was the same car but I am sure there's not another one out there like it so it probably was.

I have told several people of your wanting one to change things on find another one and leave this one alone...it survived 50 years unmolested...let it be for another 50!

I agree it would be a shame to cut a hole in the floor for a 4 speed. Also a shame it was ordered with a 2 speed column shifter.The car would be a blast to drive with a manual transmission,. At the end of the day its just a car.

I think the car is all but sold to a member on here...but if not I plan to list it next week. It's amazing the interest I have already received in the car and haven't even actually put it up for sale yet.

Well I was expecting payment on the car tomorrow but some kind of "family situation" on the buyers end has caused him to back out so I will be listing the car in the classifieds and on eBay this week.

I do apologize to everyone that inquired about the car and I told them it was sold...But I took the buyer at his word and thought it was.

Robbie, Sorry to hear that! It's unfortunate that some people can't stand behind their "word"! You won't have a problem selling such a rare 64 GTO in this condition!
I would love to own it myself as I'm partial to the Tri-Power with Automatics (77J = 693 Built), but it's not in my best interest at this time.

Its not a big deal at all Chris...I know this car will sell easily. I really don't have any hard feelings toward the potential buyer at all...he is a super nice guy and taught me a few things about the car I didn't know. I know things happen and I take him at his word that he had a situation come up and he couldn't complete the transaction...it just wasn't meant to be for him to have this car. The car will end up being where its supposed to be...cars like this always do.

In the mean time since I took advantage of owning it a little longer and we drove it to church this morning...we had the only beige & gold 64 Tri-power column shift auto GTO there!

97Ramsst, thank you very much for sharing your car with us during your brief custody of it. It's a special car, and is much appreciated by us on the forum. There are so many neat old cars that just sit in exile, locked away in dark garages for nobody to see or enjoy. Glad you drove it to church and snapped the photo...if it weren't for the 'new' cars in the background, it could very well be 1964. Thanks again for posting.

that car belongs back here in ohio where it came from! the dealer that sold it was in cleveland hts. They used to have a turntable and would put neat new models on it. they really went after performance cars also! fred

Hey Robbie, I hate to see her go but I do appreciate you taking me for a ride in it the other week when I was there picking up another car.

I can guaranty the new owner is differently going to be impress with how well the car has survived and been preserved not to mention how good it drives. I even believe they might be surprised at how much power the car has with the power glide!!! I can tell you that I was not excepting it to kick down and move like it did.

Seems like in 64 Pontiac was a little ahead of the curve back then.

I caught that after I posted it and it was too late to edit it....I can't believe it took somebody that long to point it out! LoL

I was getting ready to send my buddy your article by Email and I was about to list the colors when something didn't register true with the Portugal Gold name. I did a quick look at UltimateGTO and confirmed the color is Singapore Gold.

The car is absolutely gorgeous!

About these two-tone paint jobs. Back in the day, a home-town Pontiac dealership salesman special ordered himself a 64 GTO that was "pink" with a black painted top. The pink was not anything Pontiac offered. It was more like a "Mary Kay" color.

Thanks for all the feedback and compliments on the car. It left today headed north to its new owner...a fellow forum member and enthusiast that will appreciate and preserve it.

Like I said before cars like this have a way of ending up were they are supposed to be...it went out to CA for a while and did the Hollywood thing...then it came down to Tupelo and set beside Elvis's Caddy for a while and now it's headed back back home to OH. I feel very fortunate to say I was the caretaker of it for a while.
