wheel choice 1965 GTO
 

Below are a few pics of a Lemans convertible (Not mine) that have Hurst wheels with whitewall tires. That is very unusual. BUT I like the looks. My 1965 GTO is exactly the same color combo and although I was going to run a set of Hurst wheels with Red Line tires as a secondary set (will also keep the spinner caps with white walls) I now might go the same look as this lemans..... Let me know your thoughts on the white walls VS red lines. THANKS

My opinion is Redline, blackwall or in a pinch thin double whitewall.
I've never liked whitewalls that were that wide.

Newer tires are OK with raised lettering also.

I prefer the redline, but whitewalls on Hurst rims were not uncommon back in the day. I agree, the look is nice. My blue charcoal '65 hardtop came exactly like yours from the factory: whitewall tires and custom wheelcovers.

got rid of the redlines, spinner wheel covers run 15x7 rallys wife says car no longer looks dumb in her opine guess its no longer numbers-matching yuk

Very classy with the whitewalls.

The whitewalls really contrast nicely with the dark blue body.

Convertibles of the sixties and whitewall tires just seem to go together well.

I have run the Hurst wheels on two of my cars over the last 16 years. Now I'm excited about stock wheel covers. It is rare to see hubcap cars, and the 65 spinner is super rare. I like that with the whitewall on an original car, much more than Hurst wheels but I am biased to stock and original which some consider boring.

There was a time I would have said 'No way' to whitewalls on a GTO. Now...maybe I'm getting old but they look as good as any and better than some.
The pictured LeMans looks great and very original with the whitewalls and Hurst rims in my opinion. If you like it, DO IT!

I've never been a redline fan. The whitewalls wouldn't be for me, either - but I agree you should do it if you like it.

I have to agree with BMan; The whitewalls give it an air of "sporty yet classy" while the redlines say "sporty and aggressive". My 64 convertible is the exact same color scheme and I thought about going with whitewalls and the original tri-bar spinner wheel covers for an alternative to the 16" Torquethrusts - you know - for when you want that timeless classic car look.

I like the redlines for the nostalgia look. Plus - the GTO was the first car to ever sport them!

I really would like to put a set of full polished with whitewall tires ... So, I will most likely sell both sets and buy a set of full polished and install a set of whitewall tires (just like in the Lemans I posted earlier).....

I prefer the poverty hubcap, gives it a more race look, plus most of them came that way back then, and now everyone throws a set of ralleys on them, and not to many still run these:

Racer 81, That too is a great idea. I actually have an original set of poverty caps that are as good as NOS that I bought for my 1967 Firebird over 35 years ago and never used them. .I have 2 steel wheels (extra ones), and I had no use for the red lines BUT your idea would look good with the poverty caps and red lines for the "aggressive" look for on occasions. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Rally 1 wheels
My 67 Lemans convertible was Montego Cream, white top & interior and Rally 1's with the thin, dual stripe white walls.
If I ever get it finished, it will be that again.
And yes, I am that old to remember driving my older brother's 65 GTO convertible to a Friday night dance with my then girlfriend, now bride next to me. :D
And he ordered it with the Rally 1's and whitewall tires ;)

Another "rare" option is the poverty caps with trim rings (actually, it wasn't an option, but could have been done).

A few years ago - someone asked if they had ever seen poverty caps with trim rings here on the board. I hadn't - but happened to have a full set of GM NOS trim rings still in the package. Decided to put one off to take a photo for the poster that had asked.

I liked the look so much I put the other 3 on.

actually it does look good with the trim rings.
I will have to dig out the poverty caps I have and take a picture of them to post on here to see if they are correct for my 1965.

My car was built in Freemont and they used black wheels. I think body color wheels with poverty caps will look better on my car and existing black wall TAs.

No, not until 1965 was the GTO offered with Rallye I wheels.

All 1964 GTOs used either standard 'no extra cost' dog dish caps or they could be optioned with a variety of full wheel covers.

That beauty looks like it was originally born a LeMans. Note the nine chrome louver ornaments just in front of the rear tire, featured only on the LeMans trim level.

The GTO hood, grille emblem and '6.5 Litre' fender emblems were added later on.

DING DING DING. You win the prize. The $295 GTO option was added, let's say, not at the factory. ;)

It's all good as long it's all upfront. Great looking car either way. Auto or stick? Hard to tell from the photo angle but it appears to be equipped with two 4bbls?

Wow, you guys are good. Yes, those are dual quads, but not there now. The 469 stroker (with Butler inners) is mated to a Muncie backed by 3.42's. All of which has been beefed up (lightweight flywheel, custom built tranny, HD axles, the list is long).

Freshly restored, this southern car was sprayed Viper blue. check out those original floorboards! I can't wait!

Are those redlines recaps? I noticed the lines around the tires near the tread. I'm getting ready to make the tire decision on my 64 convertible project and this thread has confused me even more, as so many of the options look so good. I am going to start off, at least, running the original deluxe hubcaps with spinners, but can't decide between redlines, 1/2" white walls, or white letters. Way back in the day when there was very little money we first opted for no hubcaps at all and solid black wheels with the white walls that the car had on it when we got it. Kind of a severe poverty look, I guess. Then when the tires wore out we replaced them with white lettered wider tires. Finally, after saving for quite a while, those white letters were mounted on a bright shiny set of chrome reverse rims.....now THAT was cool (to us, at least)!

Champ, your '64 with the blackwalls, rings and poverty caps looks really, really nice. I think that setup makes that car pop! I've personally never taken a shine to redlines. Red is a strong color which makes the tires themselves pop but clashes with all the other colors around it (IMO). Again, really nice pic with the blackwalls - thanks for posting! Eric

I personally like the redlines better. Of course, my car is white and the wheels are black - which works very well with the redlines.

I'm old enough to remember seeing these cars at the showroom (my Dad sold Pontiacs starting in 1963...) with redlines and to me none of the early year GTO's look right without them (even though my car was originally delivered with whitewalls).

To me the redlines compliment most colors. In fact, I can't think of a color they don't look good with. It's only lately that the whitewalls have started to look nice to me also.

I'm with Greg 100%. Only in the past few years and in my old age, have I started to appreciate whitewalls on these cars. Redlines still my favorite, even though mine came with whitewalls and Custom wheel covers.
