As a few of you have guessed, I've picked up Steve Schappaugh's 73 Formula/Trans Am show car. It should come as no surprise that I'm a HUGE fan of cars that look like you just pulled the cover off of them in some old garage after 30 years in hiding and this car more than fits the bill. I had been looking for a 73 Formula to build a SD clone for Pure Stock & F.A.S.T. racing and this car came along at the right time. Unfortunately I'll have to build it for Street Class or just for fun as both classes will not allow me to run it with the "Show Car" paint scheme. :rolleyes:

The car is currently running a rebuilt 79 TA TA Pontiac 400 and T-10 but that will be replaced by a 73/74 SD motor sometime in 2014. Heads and a carb are on their way & I haven't yet decided if I'll use a SR 455HO block I already have or a SD block. Intake is still in the air as I have a 72 HO unit like what was on the car during it's show days but I'm leaning towards an LS-2 intake if I can find one for the right price.

Car is outfitted with the ASC sunroof, Recaro seats in NOS condition and a 70's era Blaupunkt Stereo with multiple speakers & remote. The car is only showing 14,000 miles and the enamel paint is in super condition only needing a little work to be perfect. The only change to the exterior of the car will be the addition of SD 455 decals to the shaker and possibly a wheel/tire change to something more towards stock - we'll have to see. The A/C will be removed and a full compliment of period correct Stewart Warner gauges sourced from Ram4king's private collection will be filling the holes in the dash - Musclecollector has even promised me a pair of NOS Levis Bell-bottom blues! ;)

I'm hoping to track down the owner who performed the modifications to get more history on the build, when it was done, where it was shown, answer questions about the obvious BMW M1 influances and if there were ever any magazine appearances. Thanks to Steve for letting me catch him at the right moment, as my son said when I texted him the pictures "THAT CAR IS SICK!" I'm real excited, and can't wait to get it!!! :D

I love everything about this car. The paint, wheels, sunroof, and interior are killer. I wouldn't change a thing except the engine.

Nah, no side pipes but how about a set of oval pipes that dump out in front of the rear tires? The current ones are cut off after the mufflers, may go with stock too.

Love the car. The wheels gotta stay, too, although I might change the color of the centers from gold to a dark charcoal or something.

Those 80-84 Gm and Ford used Recarro's are in sweet shape! would cost a small fortune to redo.

Hmm,interesting threads about the sunroof.A friend of mine bought a 1969 Buick Skylark 2dr-ht.The car was equipped with a manual sliding sunroof.The car was made in Oshawa and shipped to the GM plant in Antwerpen,Belgium.I sent photos to the Buick Club in USA and they told me that the car was a fake.I investegated further and voila,they actually did apprx 100 sunroof cars in 1968 and 50 in 1969.WHY? To get the car more attractive to the buyers at that time.A lot of US military folks worked in Europe at that time.And this was NOT like the "Sun-Coupes" that was avaliable in 1972,spec on Buicks.I have`t seen a 1973 Firebird with a sunroof before.But I have a picture of a 1970 Dodge Charger with a sunroof,must be quite rare.

PHS faxed me the first two pages on Tuesday but no invoice page. :doh: I figured I'd have to wait until the 2nd to get another copy unless the mail showed up first. Low & behold, it showed up this morning. :D

As predicted, no sign of a sunroof - the research continues.

The more I think about what I want to do with the car, and the fact that I can't run it in the PSMCDR & FAST classes, I'm thinking of leaving the A/C on the car and just replacing the dash vents with the gauges. Has anyone ever done this? how difficult is it to just remove the top two vents out of the dash & replace with gauges?

Very easy. First remove the lower vent knee panel with the two plastic dzus screws. Then remove the steering column bracket bolts so the column can drop down a few inches, so the dash face can clear the wheel. The woodgrain/engine turned dash face comes straight out once you pull all the screws out (including the two long ones that come up from underneath). Then there is a the dual vent "pod" behind those two vents, that is held in with a 4 screws. Once you remove that pod you will have the room for the gauges to go into those two vents.

P.S. use a repro dash face for the gauges so you don't cut up the original one.

Im running two gauges in the AC vents on the dash. I didnt remove the duct work, and its not in the way. They're mechanical gauges too.

I've been in touch with the prior owner who had it since the 80's, he'll be putting me in touch with the original owner. :D

Interesting thing - when all of the modifications were done to the car in 1976 it was painted black. It got the white paint job in 1981 when the black repaint over the original lacquer began to fail. All of the work was performed at Suburban Pontiac and the SD engine was built by HO Racing - cost over 4k in 1976. :eek:

Not that it really matters but the original 400 engine was sold to a mechanic in the service department for $500 when it got pulled.

Someone really went to great lengths to commemorate the BMW sport package cars (ME3 or something like that) of that day and time. They even used gold inset basket weave wheels like those on that vintage of BMW's.

Looks like a great car that just needs a lil corrective paint work and some wheels.

You did see the car on a transporter on Saturday. it was dropped off to me on Monday, and Chris came in to get it after he went to Mike Nixon's funeral down in Indiana.

I knew it had to be the same car. Not a paint scheme you see everyday........thank God!
