BARRETT JACKSON 2014
|
Color change and wheels hurt it in my opinion
|
Nice looking car.......who can argue with a "loaded HO"?
Anaconda Gold (original color) would have made it look BETTER... I do recall seeing it in HPP,but thinking it's been through Ebay recently?....or maybe in the "shark tank"? |
I was at the BJ kick off cruise at the Pavilions this past Saturday and bought my tickets for this coming Friday. I'll be there to check out some stuff and say hi to a few customers. 1400 cars this year, should be a good showing. Always a good time.
|
here's the recent post on the Formula 455HO:

I wouldn't expect high sales this early in the week, especially a Tuesday. Must not of been considered cream of the crop to go so early on the block so that should tell you something. Still though, a final sale price of $32k seems like pretty decent money for a car of this caliber. Seller should be happy.
|
I will say who ever bought it will have room to work with whats there.
AG isn't a bad color if one so chooses. Sheetmetal looks good. Interior is nice and has some neat options. Y99 (14 Inch honeys listed with rallys shown) if really intact also a great option for a Formula. Engine bay and all can be fixed... Hope its still there on Friday so I can see it in person! A win win? |
Usually the cars that sell will sit there for the week. We'll see ;)
More money than I would pay for a car this incorrect, but it just goes to show a car doesn't have to be correct to sell for decent money. Just a matter of getting it seen in the right market. |
I guess we see things different. Not a bad body (correct fenders) and nice color, nice original type (deluxe) interior, and under hood mostly there. Need a 2270 carb and some other pieces to make correct.
What do you see that is the most work and not worth that money? Granted it is shown in auction pictures which only shows the good stuff. Body could be bad and underside rotted, and more I guess... |
Actually I'm more open to cars like this, more so than I guess I'm coming accross. It's not that I see it as a bad car, I just wouldn't pay that much for a formula with a non original color and missing certain parts and pieces. If I were to do a color change I would have at least picked a factory color for that year.
Not much more money and you could have yourself a pretty darn nice TA. Don't get me wrong, Sunset Orange is a beautiful color that looks great on anything, but painting a classic muscle car that color sort of sets the tone for the rest of the car to have custom touches. I'll admit at least it's not black or red. I wouldn't miss it if I didn't have to paint another car that color. I've grown to like the obscure stuff I guess. Hard to judge these cars overall until you see them in person. Like you said, they look great on TV and in pictures, but when you walk around and see them in person you start to realize why some cross the block with low numbers and why others command a premium. This car would have actually done better if it were scheduled for prime time this weekend, but obviously there is something about the car that made them feel it was better suited for the Tuesday spotlight? Whether it was the color change, or something else we can't see on camera? It will be interesting to look at Friday. |
72 Formula HO
I think that is about top dollar for a car that needs to be stripped bare to correct the color change. How much would that cost in todays body/paint shop dollars? It is a nice looking car, but a lot of it needs to be correctly restored which will cost more than a non #'s matching car is worth. (in My opinion) That said, I would stiil love to have it!

Some production numbers by Lloyd:
1972 Formula 455-HO total = 276 1972 Trans Am with M22 = 458 1972 Trans Am with M40 = 828 1972 Trans Am total = 1,286 Total 1972 455-HO TAs and Formulas= 1,562 Not sure on split but it could be close to TA M22/M40? A rare 72 Formula 455 HO w/ Y99, gauges, and factory spoiler loaded with options is as desirable as a rare 72TA? Someone thought so... |
I looked that car over pretty hard. It had an SR block, late model Chevrolet q jet and an HEI distributor. I thought what it got was good for the seller. Buyer may not feel the same way though.

I like the color of it. Its sharp.

What would a "non-original" paint color do to the value of your 71 T/A?..........I'd say,it would reduce the value of the car an amount equal to the cost of repainting,in the correct....or at least a factory available color... Different story if this were a base bird, Esprit or started life as a Formula 350.......JMO |

Do I think it hurt the value of the car in question having a color change? To a few people it does, but I think that most people who are buying cars at these auctions are buying them because they like them for what they are. Most are buying cars to drive and enjoy. The car not wearing its original color is not a issue for me. In fact, I think it looks better. |

Since I'm not sure about this i'll make it a question. In 73, the Y99 Suspension
upgrade also got you 15 inch wheels. This 72 states Y99 and 14 inch wheels. So my question is, were 15 inch wheels part of Y99 in 72? |
Yes in 72 y99 is 15 wheels steelies standard or options includes rally I or honeys listed on phs.
|
Are there any other early second gen birds in this years Scottsdale BJ and RM?

Not to take this too far off subject, just a gripe really that I heard alot of people talking about this weekend.....
What's with all the various channels throughout the week broadcasting BJ??? I've counted 4 different channels at different times, some switching in the middle of the day, even on the fox business channel? Today it's on some other channel, and then at prime time tonight, probably the biggest night for BJ, it's broadcast on National Geographic? Talk about odd. I know Speed is gone but why couldn't they find one channel and stick with it? I gave up earlier this week and quit watching it, too much trouble. I have a feeling their viewing audiance count is going to be down this year. Hopefully BJ takes notice and corrects it for next year. |

Interesting that you still have Speed. That channel died down here late last year and is no longer available on DirecTV.
