I believe this car is being offered outright at $24,500. I had a friend drive down to see it and he was quite disappointed despite it's beautiful appearance in the pictures. He told me there was a surprising amount of bondo in the car.

I remember this car in Darrel's warehouse the first time I flew over to see him in Texas.

It does appear to be a very early SSJ and quite possibly the first one made. Darrel Yoder owned and restored this car probably in the 2002-2004 range and he was a hawk when it came to doing the cars correctly and researching their backgrounds. One of the best in the business in finding and documenting rare cars.

This is the car that I sold to Darrel back years ago. I have the PHS on it. A friend found it about 15 miles from here in AL.

The car did not come with the Hurst SSJ emblems,supposedly due to the early production and emblem availability. It had regular SJ emblems on it. I was told that there were two cars built close together and this was the first one.

Darrel told me that this was the first SSJ made. It is the car on the factory Hurst Brochure for 1970.

It has brown interior and was numbers matching when it was sold.

I see the seller has my documents and Smoke Signals story about the car in the pics on ebay.

Anyone interested in the car that may have questions about its history,let me know.

same here, I had a triple white '72 that could have made an awesome hurst clone

GPs are a great value
 

These cars are way under valued , but like 63-65 Riveras GS, 66-67 Olds Toronados they will come up and be at 50K for top notch cars before you know it. A 70 GP 400 sold at Mecum in the low 40's through it looked like it had more invested in the restoration. GPs are a great value when you consider the quality, how well they drive and styling. Just my 02 cents..

I'm still trying to figure out the link that confirms the fact that this is the actual car that Linda Vaughn used. Anyone else figure that out?

Hard to be 100% positive on that issue without her or someone at Hurst verifying it (maybe Don Morton). But, the fact that this is a very early VIN SSJ and the non-SSJ emblems on the fenders puts it as a frontrunner. The stock Pontiac fender emblems suggest that this is a pre-production SSJ...

Hurst may have had 1,2, or 3 of these SSJs around at that time, so it's near impossible to conclude, at least from my POV.

So the guy calls me a couple weeks ago, sez this car is up for sale and it is nice, rare etc...Knows I'm some sort of SSJ expert or something....OK....


So I told him I know the car and he sez it's up for about $25k and he can get it for $20k

Told him to buy it at $20k if he likes it, but that's top market on the car. Go ahead try to flip the car but you"ll probably be holding the bag on it. Maybe get some more on ebay or whatever. MEgabucks? no.

Still at 20-25k would be a unique eye catcher at just about any show. forget about the "Linda claims" and just consider it an SSJ. Im bidding on it

my green car has about as much rust on it as the bumper brackets of yours....don't recall you seeing it...

Here's the car used in the 70 SSJ color brochure. You'll notice the stock SJ emblem on the driver's side but not on the passenger side. A keen eye will tell you why. Any guesses?

Looks like the same photo but reversed. In that case the emblem would be backwards.

Bingo. The chrome mirror is visible on the "passenger side", and if you look closely, you can faintly see the RH-drive steering wheel. Not sure why Hurst didn't bother with a normal passenger side shot, but it's clear they mirrored the driver's side photo thus reversing the emblem which would have read backward.

Did you notice that they both went to the same dealer?

I thought the SSJ cars were supposed to start out as the J model? Something to do with the paint?

70 info. says how to order a SSJ: either J or SJ model GP , cannot order cordova vinyl top (due to the landau top being put on and sunroof installed at Hurst),also Rally II wheels were mandatory as they were painted gold by Hurst. Must be polar white or Starlight black. Most other options were available

Interior colors were : black, gold ,brown saddle and sandlewood


Some info out there does not deal with the 70 SSJ.

Is this the same car that Darrell Yoder had on e-bay from May of 2002? Dug out the old ad and he claimed it was car #65. Had a note the car was sold to someone in El Paso Texas and then to Don White in Philadelphia?

I believe Darrel had two 70 SSJs at different times, but my memory is a little sketchy. I physically saw the ebay one, but I vaguely remember him talking about another 70....

Those two SSJs went to the same dealer (18-764) but the lower VIN car has a later date. I'm not sure how that happened.

Hello Harvey, the ad I dug up from May 2002 was written by Darrel (from Brownsville Texas) and he - like you was well versed in the SSJ. His ad listed the Formula steering wheel as opposed to the wood wheel on the current ebay car, and Darrel listed it as car #65. Did you see it in person?

Frankly, I'm not 100% positive which one I saw in 2004 during my visit. I think it's the ebay one but I am doubting myself a little since this was 10 years ago. I am fairly sure that he had two of the 70's, Larry's black & gold SSJ, as well as his green & gold SSJ.

I think the #65 car was restored and sold around 2002 and the ebay one was sold around 2004, but my timing may be off. And I don't recall seeing a Formula wheel on the SSJ I saw in his warehouse. I can ask Darrel's son who Larry & I sometimes correspond with.

Thanks Harv, it is hard to remember that far back! The #65 car was sold in May 2002 and I keep referring to it as the e-bay car because I have the print out from ebay on it. I guess I never did see his other 70 SSJ. I seem to recall he also had a white 71 SSJ that sold on ebay? Jim

Harvey, Darrel bought my 70 in 96 or 97. Last we saw each other, I believe you had some idea of its whereabouts, PA I thought you said. I've completely lost track of it. Too far out of the loop. Heck, I've been out of FL for nearly 3 years.

Boy do I remember your 70 SSJ! All I can say is RATS, for a couple of reasons!

I had actually forgotten that Darrel bought that car, and I know yours was in darned good shape back then, so I'm quite positive he had multiple 70 SSJs. And I'm also sure the ebay one isn't your Orlando car.

Where are you living these days?

From what I have been told last night is is going to be in northern Alberta not to far from the tar sands soon. I sold a 69 four speed to the same guy many years ago. He has a few Grand Prix's.

I am not the buyer. I emailed the seller's agent for more information and he didn't respond. I cooled on the car mostly because of the body filler rumors. I was the high bidder before the auction ended though, but the reserve had not been met.

Could use the price for current SSJ market values. (No I'm not selling my cars)

When the bidding seened to stop at around 21k the buyer probably offered arount 25k to make the sale happen

Should be easy to tell if the car has emblems or not in the photo.

20K value on 70 SSJ cars
 

there seems to be a lot of 20K talk on the value of these 1970
SSJ cars............I am surprised members with these cars who
are being called upon as experts are referring to these values?
does anyone know of one of these cars anywhere for sale?
I would like to get some of these cars myself and would
be very interested in speaking to somebody that has any
for sale at any price and for sure around the 20K mark.
(that photo as well as the one in Texas that was on e-bay)

none for sale here got way more than that in them. and they are only worth the stated price ranges. That was a 20-25k car, and that's what it sold fror maybe a little more, we'll never know.

So there ya have it. Beautiful cars, rare, difficult to restore, usually pretty loaded with options (cha ching for resto) hard to find and everyone wants one.

they are not for sale because we love them, otherwise we would not bother to restore them. They are financial disasters to restore. Who can afford that? So why give them away for $20-25k? Or even $40k. No mine would be about $100k each for the restored cars. STUPID MONEY. Nobody has that for an SSJ. They should go for something red, Italian and with at least 4 valves per cylinder.

What is the highest selling SSJ ever? Harv, what did the silver car do at auction? It was George Hurst's personal car with his name etched it the door glass. Only silver car. Should be a $150k car right? Harv, chime in....

I agree with what you are saying it makes sense.

I was noticing an early thread that suggested
somebody was looking for an "SSJ expert value"
on the one on e-bay.

That was when the 20K number seemed to be mentioned.

I think the same that that car could have went crazy at
the end if the auction was not ended early once it met
the 24,5 reserve and was obviously going somewhere.

I think the guys who are like you and have and want
100K for there cars (not 20 or 25K ) would have jumped
up and took it well past the 24,5 number.

I would very much like to buy a 70 SSJ and hope more
sneak out of the wood work like this one did. I was just
very surprised and happy to see the value of the last one
did not make the bidders go to high early and stop the owner
from selling it. I am assuming all the real bidders were
waiting for the last minute

Never figured out what that silver car went for after Mattison got it then it went to auction, and frankly I've lost track of it. I want to say Louisiana or Rhode Island for some reason.

The Doc Watson SSJ pulled in around $50k if I'm not mistaken.

I would surely take $50k for mine.....quite possibly the last unrestored one left....

Mattison offered me the silver one for like 25-30k if I'm not mistaken and I told him I wanted it but then he told me that he and Dana Mecum bought it instead. I don't what happened to it after that.

I had an arrangement to buy the car even before Mattison, but he got together with the seller, Darrel Yoder, and pulled the rug from under my feet. Was not happy with the maneuver.
