New Personal Best
 

I've always wanted to race my Tempest at Bakersfield, but I don't like big crowds. I had a chance to participate in a test-n-tune on 2-1-14. The DA was the best I have ever raced in, varying between 1200'-1500'. Best ET was 9.76 and best mph was 138.12. It was capable of more, but the 60's were inconsistent, and the car wandered all the way down the track. I had to abandon the first run. That's too bad as my 60' was 1.40 and the air was 1000'.

Outstanding! Do you know what the da range was at Carlsbad when I operated. I use to race there in the early 90s. And I met you at the McDonald's in Escondido it the same time frame.

Awesome runs. Too bad just about every time we see optimum atmospheric conditions for best power that the additional power has the tires overcome the track just a tad. I agree, there is more in there with improved 60' times......Cliff

The best air I ever saw at Carlsbad was 1800', and that was on a cool night. Normal "good" air was 2500'-3000'. For us that was great as our comparison was LACR. We were lucky for the air to be 5000' or less at Palmdale.

As usual Jim, always improving your game. Nice work.

Probably have gone faster now NA than you ever did in the street racing days (with the smaller engine, tri-power, and NOS).

It was -21 here this am. Does sound like a GREAT time. Nice OMT!

Yep! The streetcar is heavier by 300-400 pounds, the engine is a 428, and it is just a small nitrous shot - about 165 hp. I only had it out one time in that configuration. It ran 10.80 at 129.31. The speed is high for two reasons: it is a stick shift; and in the old days the speed trap went past the finish line. Now it ends at the finish line.

Congrats Jim. Just curious what rear tires you are running and what is the weight of the car ?
We tried stiff wall slicks on our "Two tons of Fun" Catalina and found that the car shasshayed all over, especially at the big end. Went back to M/T ET Street radials to solve problem.

I am running 29x11 stiff wall Hoosiers. I haven't scaled the car in awhile, but race weight should be close to 3500 pounds. The car is typically quite stable, but it is exciting on marginal tracks.

Congrats, Jim! Are you going to be at March Meet, or is it too jammed up/crowded for you? I tend to go every year (as a spectator) on Friday. Saturday and Sunday are SUPER busy. It gets better/bigger each year, though.

Jim, you need to bring your car back for the March Meet. It would fit right into C/GAS
9.60 index. It would be nice to see you and have one more Pontiac. The track is always better for that event.

Only on the streetcar. The racecar has a Powerlide with a 1.76 first gear and a 4.10 rear.

I've never even attended the new March meet. I don't like crowds that big.

The problem is that I am not licensed nor the car certified to run that quick. My guess is that they would be more stringent at that meet than they are at a test-n-tune.
