HELP!Need info on what side of 4-speed speedo cable goes in for 69 GTO

My muncie 4-speed tranny in my 1969 GTO ram air III has the speedometer cable going in the drivers side of the tranny and the one I bought for my 69 GTO has the speedometer cable going in the passenger side. What is correct.Dont know if the tranny in my car has been changed before I got my GTO or if its the original one.The guy I got the rebuilt tranny says they go in the passenger side. Also can I get my speedo cable to work or if I get another longer one can I get it to work. Please let me know on this>Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

The factory service manual I believe told me that the 4 speed and the toploader 3 speed in 1969 were passenger side speedometer cables and the 3 speed Saginaw was driver side. I know my toploader is a passenger side.

KO 04-20-2014 08:11 PM

3.55 and lower drivers side, 3.90 and 4.33 passenger side

cballweg 04-20-2014 08:50 PM

Hey Ben,can you tell me where they route your cable for passenger side?Does it go in front of tranny when it crosses over from speedometer or does it crossover behind tranny?

cballweg 04-20-2014 08:59 PM

Hey KO.thats really wierd they would change location based on rear axle ratios.Mine is a 3:55 drivers side but want to go to 3:90 gear since I installed ram air IV heads, intake and cam.Do you have any idea how they routed the speedo cable for passenger side? Thanks everone for your replies

tom s 04-20-2014 10:19 PM

my 69 judge with numbers matching 4 speed with 3.55 in the rear, also original had a drivers side speedo.Tom

cballweg 04-20-2014 10:28 PM

Thanks

webfoot 04-20-2014 10:44 PM

My car originally had a 3.90 gear, and there is a small bracket/cage nut at the bottom of the firewall, and there is a little clip that bolts here to hold the cable in place. (I am assuming this is the correct procedure, you may want to verify.) My trans is also pass side speedo cable.

I can take pics of what I think is the correct part.

Since you are apparently going for correctness, I believe you will also need a reducer to get the speedo to read correctly. I have my original if you need one.

cballweg 04-20-2014 11:19 PM

I have a clip also but it directs the cable straight back and then cable loops over to tranny on drivers side.Does yours clip direct cable straight back also and if so does it loop in front of tranny or behind tranny or does your clip direct cable sideways over to tranny right away and cable goes accross tranny in front of tranny and then loop back to rear speedo fitting on tranny? As far as reducer are you talking about a different speedo gear in tranny?I had them install a 3:55 speedo gear in new tranny for now since I have a 3:55 gear but eventually I want to change to 3:90 gear so wont change it for a while. Thanks for you reply and info

cballweg 04-20-2014 11:51 PM

Webfoot, does you cable run over or under tranny to passenger side?thanks

KO 04-21-2014 07:55 AM

cars with 3.90 and 4.33 gears had a small 90 degree ratio adapter connected to a short cable that goes under the transmission and connects the the main speedometer cable, there wouldn't be any room on the drivers side to accommodate the adapter

cballweg 04-21-2014 10:31 AM

Does this adapter fasten on tranny or speedometer or in between the 2 cables because I only have a one piece cable?I know they used to have 2 cables and now the replacements are a one piece design.thanks

KO 04-21-2014 04:19 PM

the adapter screws on the side of the transmission with a normal speedo connection, the short cable then screws on to the adapter and then that connects to the main cable. the main cable would be the same regardless of rear axle.

cballweg 04-21-2014 05:19 PM

So,could I just use one long cable I have thats 80 inches long and screw it into adapter instead of using 2 cables or is the short cable different on the end that screws into the adapter? Thanks for your help

KO 04-21-2014 07:06 PM

that should work

cballweg 04-21-2014 07:57 PM

Hey webfoot.Send me a private message on your adapter and if you have 3:90 speedo gear also.Im interested

webfoot 04-21-2014 10:39 PM

Don't have the gears anymore (I do have a HD pinion yoke if you will need that) but let me clean that adapter up and send you a pic.

cballweg 04-21-2014 10:48 PM

No,I meant the speedometer gear that goes in the tranny for 3:90 rear gear, not the ring and pinion for rear axle.Sorry

cballweg 04-21-2014 10:49 PM

yes,send me a pic

Hooch 04-22-2014 09:01 AM

This is a good I was getting ready to put my cable back in the car this week.
It would be great if you could put the pic on this for everyone to see. I would like more info on this matter for myself. My iv judge built in April at Pontiac has 67155 miles on the car and it looks like the cable was never out of the car until I took it out. The motor and trans was replaced in 73 so I cannot say for sure that someone didn't change it out so I need to know what is correct for my car as well, because my car had one cable not two. I would like if more people with iv cars would post on this matter.

Thanks,
Chris

Here is a pic of that adapter. I am not 100% sure if this is the correct part because it has "Stewart Warner" stamped into it in cursive letters. However, my car was originally a 3.90 rear and would have used one of these.

cballweg 04-23-2014 03:38 PM

Is this the one that came off your GTO?

webfoot 04-23-2014 04:08 PM

Yep.

cballweg 04-23-2014 05:16 PM

How much do you want for it?I also need the speedometer gear that goes in tranny for a 3:90 rear gear if you still have it.

cballweg 04-23-2014 05:17 PM

This bolted in to your tranny?

webfoot 04-23-2014 05:29 PM

It has the groove in the side for the tab that retains the normal speedo cable, the part I am holding goes on the trans side. The other shaft faces the front of the vehicle. You can have it for $20 shipped, I really have no idea what its worth.

I don't have the gear.

cballweg 04-23-2014 06:01 PM

Do you have a paypal account? If so give me your paypal address so I can pay you.If not how do you want paid and give me info and your address.Does it have a cable that goes into the tranny to turn speedometer gear like the ones I have seen of these do or is it missing? Thanks

webfoot 04-23-2014 06:34 PM

I don't have anything else that is supposed to go with it, sorry. As for how it works, I have no idea as my car was totally disassembled when I got it.

cballweg 04-23-2014 07:03 PM

Ill take it.If you dont want info on here send me a private message so we can determine how you want paid.I still like paypal if you have an account. Its easy and faster but if not youll have to send me your address.thanks

webfoot 04-23-2014 07:07 PM

I did a bit ago via PM.

cballweg 04-23-2014 07:20 PM

Sent address with paypal and PM.Thanks again

I don't know where all this info comes from but you are way off. As a restorer and collector of 69 gto' s for 30 years I've never seen or heard of a 69 having the Speedo cable on the passenger side. I've had ones with ratios of 308-433 and everyone had it on the drivers side. I've never seen a Speedo adapter on a stick car EVER. Automatics only. You do what u want but the correct trans is the one with the Speedo on the drivers side.

g68mike 04-23-2014 11:10 PM

I agree with Ram4 king. All 68-69 GTO's had the speedo on the drivers side. I think firebirds and chevy might have them on passenger side, but not 100% sure. Definitely GTO on drivers side. You can look in the 69 assembly manual and it clearly shows drivers side speedo's.

What about the 3 speed Dearborn? Serious question!

cballweg 04-24-2014 12:09 PM

Why would the automatics have the ratio adapter and a 4-speed wouldent? Thanks

I parted out a 68 LeMans with 3 speed Dearborn trans, as I recall the speedo was on the passenger side of the trans but I can't be 100% sure now.

I have one file photo of the drivers side of the transmission, It's not the best picture but I sure don't see a speedo gear mount.

FWIW

I owned a 69 GTO 4 speed with a/c years ago and it had the speedometer ratio adapter, as I recall it had a 3.23 ratio rear differential.

I suppose it is possible it could have been added at sometime over the years but the car did have it's born with drivetrain, motor, transmission and rear differential.

cballweg 04-25-2014 08:45 AM

Poncho447,was the speedometer mount on drivers side or passenger side?

The speedo mount was on the drivers side, I have never seen a GTO 4 speed car with a passenger side speedo mount.
