pretty nice 1973 survivor car here....looks to be very well preserved i'd say, tho i do wonder if the front valance has been replaced. thought *all* 73's had a plastic valance?....

gorgeous car! But look at that rear wheel well - was there a spot weld quota on the line that day? Sheesh

Valance is a replacement metal unit and those spot weld look correct. The weird thing is the undercoating or lack there of.
When they sprayed that sticky stuff it went every where including springs, shocks, drive line...?

Interesting it shows on the window sticker that it went to zone 7 dealer 991, and the other stuff shows Red Holman as the dealer.

It must have been a zone car, be nice to see the PHS on it.

another thing that caught my eye is the fitted trunk mat, standard interior cars would not have had this originally. must be a Dealer/Owner add on???

I'm probably in the minority, but I like the whitewall tires. That is one neat car- too bad it left Michigan. Nice to see they put a transverse muffler instead of the turbos.

I like them too....something different...they make the car look clean... I must be getting old.. LOL... If radials were ordered were whitewalls standard in 1973? My SD came with radials and am trying to figure out which sidewalls it came with.

If your 73 came with radials........they WERE whitewalls.........

Other than the exhaust,shocks,front springs,trunk mat, lower valance and front brake pads it looks to be pretty much the way it left the factory.....

Interesting color combination.....pretty "reserved" for a T/A.... and NO big chicken.....

For ME....any white Trans am with a rubber nose and chrome rear bumper NEEDS to have blue stripes.....JMO

No. The GR70x15 radial was available in blackwall, whitewall, or white letter. One of the choices was the infamous, exploding, Firestone Steel Radial 500. Here is the original set on my car. The 1973-only version of the 500 has the white "F" shield logo on the side. For 1974 they replaced the white "F" shield with an embossed black logo.

The set of whitewalls on the white 73 survivor at T/A Specialties are Uniroyal Steel Belted Radials.

That is certainly a beauty but it is irritating that they slathered on all that KY Jelly on the tires and engine compartment. It makes it really hard to see the details of the components. The original rust proofing really saved that car, though. The second owners service booklet notes that he replaced the shocks in 1979 at 10,000 miles. I guess they kept the original spirals and reinstalled them. Wise decision.

Most of the polyethylene valances were replaced under warranty within the first weeks or months of ownership since the majority of them arrived already cracking. Some never even made it past dealer prep.

Original window sticker is cool for sure! whats the build date? All the SD phs I have seen have WW period. What does your phs note from Jim?

So far,I've checked my 73 dealer album/order guide and there is NO mention of radials in the Firebird tabbed pages that I could see.....

The 73 Fleet guide shows whitewalls and an order code......VJ GR7015 W/W steel belted radial ply ...optional on Trans am or 342...which is Y99 (on Formula)

Pontiac Selling Facts.....Sept 21/72 and March 15/73 both show GR7015 WW as optional on Trans am ONLY.....but ALSO show them as being optional on the Y99 Formula handling package,with NO sidewall specified.....

Perhaps the white letter radials were a Y99 Formula deal ONLY?

I DO have some more loose price /option pages to look at later....perhaps they will shed some light on the subject....

Cant beat this for proof: Photos of the car, the two days after he bought in August 1973, with those tires on it. Even has the polyethylene valance, too (the dealer later replaced it when it fell apart)

And the PHS.

Never did find an invoice in the car though I did look when I pulled the seats to do the heater core.

There is a little discussion on the white letter version of the GR70 radials replacing the whitewall version, late in the model year. That would explain the initial whitewall equipped cars. Since the SD's came out at the end of the 73 production run, they got the white lettered versions.

My assumption would be that the content of the Sales Code 341, Y99 Formula Handling Package changed more than once during production. My 1973 Pontiac Accessorizer & Selling Facts shows two tire choices for Y99: F60-15 white lettered or GR70-15 whitewalls. But neither of these match Steve's package MSRP of $167.00. The most expensive as of this booklet's printing (March 15, '73) was $157.00 (GR70-15 w/o Space Saver spare). Steve's N142xxx was likely a 07B build, so perhaps the later additional offering of White Letters to the GR70's accounts for the extra $10.00 MSRP.

BTW, gotta love the "Hony comb wheels" noted on the dealers own invoice.

hey steve I just noticed your partial vin # and thought for some reason it looked familiar and pulled up my copies of the sd formula phs sheets on my computer and realized it was a different one that I had it is the same vin with the last 3 digits of 376 without asking for your last three, is yours pretty close to this one? which brings me to the question I never gave any thought to, were all the sd formulas built really close together and anyone know what the breakdown between plants were.

Between plants?? All '73's were Norwood built. But then, you knew that!

Mine is high 142s, almost 143000.

The other SD Formula sold at Suburban was the Admiralty Blue, four-speed that another member here has. They were delivered together from what I recall. If you read my car's thread you'll get the whole story on how Enrico scared the hell out of the zone manager and the dealership wound up getting two allocations instead of one.
