Best Hi-Port porters?
Not trying to start a battle or debate, just trying to be pointed in the right direction of the person known to be the most knowledgeable with these heads, it can be hand porting or CNC program?

SD has a good port even though they don't advertise it.
Also Jim Robertson comes to mind. |
Second for Jim Robertson. I know he's had at least two sets go through his hands.

You prob. seen my flow sheet before but here it is again. For around $3500 back then, it was a good deal.

I do not know anyone with that engine. What I do know is if KRE offers the power level it will deliver, I've been on their pump. Do you offer more power with their parts? I don't know anything about Tom's race.
What I do know KRE is the quickest Pontiac 1/4 mile with Pontiac power. They also have the quickest Pontiac powered door car on the planet. What is your point? Quote:

Jim Robertson does nice work. See my signature. Keep in mind it's a pump gas street/strip engine with rockers/stud girdles and not a high compression race piece.

If you have an 8.50 chassis tag, a set of 370+ HP's, .750 lift cam and a 535 can get you close at about #3000. Easy on springs too. I ran 8.69 @ 159 with very little tuning, chassis or motor. I told SD Dave that I wanted to run 8.80's all day long in the heat and not change springs every year. It runs mid 8.70's to low 8.80's most anywhere. Here's my cam card, to give you an idea.

To the op, just do your research, set your goals, see who is running what you want to run or making the hp you want then find out who did their heads. |
Hill Performance has done some real nice flowing KRE HP, trend is @ PY.

Agreed, not always mandatory. Nine years ago I bought a very early set of High Port castings and we had a fellow named Rick McConathy do the port work. Rick was well known for his Chevy cylinder heads and was associated with Naiser Racing Components in Houston, Texas at the time. I believe now his business is Slick Rick Racing Heads. These guys were well known and very competitive in Texas Pro Stock Racing circles. On the first go around the heads were 403 cfm at 0.800" lift, later with additional work 412 at 0.850" on Jeff Naisers flow bench. On my engine builders bench they went 417 cfm at 0.850" lift. Later with these cylinder heads our 930 hp 526 cid Pontiac engine was pretty good stuff, today it's no big deal. Same with the heads. . |
FWIW Dan Barton is at Naiser now doing their heads now.

Best porter for what application? There are to many variables in this. If you wanted every last bit they could possibly give you the bill will be huge. Not to mention the valvetrain expense (like previously mentioned) it would require to make power with them. Everyone has a budget (some larger than others) that they have to stay within. Its not that hard to figure out how much airflow you need to make X horsepower at X cubic inches. You may not need as much flow as you think.

IMO. Any of the cookie cutter CNC versions from various vendors would get you into the 850-950hp range. Beyond that it will probably narrow the field down and drive the price up.

I've got a set of Dan's worked over HPs to go on the 500 if the E heads on it don't get me the et I want. He freshened and twesked the KRE hand ported E heads that are on it.
Saw Slowbird's stuff when I have been there before too. A few other guys from here's stuff also over the years. He did my 409 heads also. |
