Really need some help on my 68 firewall

3 Attachment(s)
Hi guys, I am trying to figure out what holes are needed, & what ones were added by previous owners over the years on the firewall my 68 GTO project. I stripped the car over 10 years ago, & I just don't recall their being so many thing mounted on the firewall. There was a mallory coil & an alarm siren to the left of the voltage regulator, so I figured there would be 4 or 5 extra holes there, but I have over 20 holes that I am not sure if they are for something, or just extra holes. It looks like a crazy cork board! I am planning on welding up & smoothening out the ones you guys can confirm are extra, & I won't hold anyone accountable for their thoughts. ;) I just need a little more input form those that can take a peek at their firewalls & see what is what.

Pretty sure the was a wire channel behind the brake booster, & some ground straps, but other than that I am at a loss right now. I don't want to weld up too many things just to re-drill them in the wrong spot, but I really don't want extra holes when its finished & painted either.

I know this is going to take some effort, & I appreciate anything you can tell me. I numbered each suspect hole & circled them in red.

Thanks!

two more pictures. I am guessing many of these holes are from devices inside the car, so only the screw threads stick out?
that would makes sense, but I have googles many images & just can't find anything definitive.

If it's easier to post the same picts from your assembled car, that would be incredibly helpful as well.

Send me your email via private message and I'll send a bunch of pictures from several cars showing original firewalls to help. Kurt

# 6 is for a one of the rubber coated wire holders

Any idea why there would be two holes (#5#6) right next two each other. Aside from the larger one that holds the throttle cable of coarse. They are almost on top of each other. I guess I'll be patient & wait for the picts.... ;)

Thanks, 68RT

Here's a pic of my passenger side firewall. Looks like #13 is for the engine ground strap. On my firewall, all the other numbers aren't holes just dimples.

Holy cow look how clean that is next to the regulator! I think I have a lot of extra holes there! ;) Thanks for the help so far!

I'm taking notes......

Pretty hard to take any good pictures of the drivers side firewall having the brake booster and wiper motor in place.

where did the hideaway hoses come out? thats got to be one of those larger holes?

Yeah, i just looked. The hideaway hoses come out of the big hole just above and to the right of the fusebox bulkhead hole.

can you see if there are any screws on those other circles I made. any picts at all would be awesome, but I understand if it can't be done. Im just flying blind. I think 68gtoMN might be sending me some too.

tekheavy 03-21-2015 02:26 PM

It looks like holes 1 and 2 are for the plastic piece that holds up the engine harness.

its funny, cause there are two dimples for the plastic raceway, but the holes are not in the dimples. Thats fast production for you in 68

Holes 3 and 4 have screws sticking out from something mounted on the inside.

So here’s my updated list:

I highlighted the ones I am still unsure of. maybe screws from the inside?

2 plastic wire tray
3 screw from inside near fuse box
4 screw from inside near fuse box

6 coated metal wire strap

I found a couple pictures I took of a 68 lemans I parted out years back. I blew up the picture best I could & scanned it. Is there supposed to be two wire straps? Looks like I can just see something near the throttle cable location, then a larger one closer to the washer motor.

Thoughts? maybe hole #16?

tekheavy 03-21-2015 04:07 PM

Directly to the left of the throttle cable, I have a screw coming threw from the inside. About an inch to the left of that and slightly down, I have an open hole. Not sure if that may have been for one of those straps you're are showing or if it is supposed to be open.

So maybe I shouldn't weld up the two holes to the left of the throttle cable? ones for a strap & the other is from the inside? they are really close together on this car.

OK, to save everyone further bother & confusion I decided to take the info from tekheavy & a couple other pictures I found & welded up all the other unknown holes. As usual I was just getting to carried away with something that isn't that critical. If I filled in one I need, I'll drill it out later on.

So, with that being said, I have just three left that I can't decide on.

The 1st, it just below the stud for the heater box,
The second is just below the rubber plug hole. The last is close to the trans tunnel & a bit larger in diameter

here's my last picture.

Thanks again tekheavy!

Great thread.

2 appears to be for j-hanger (AC wiring?)
1 dunno

3 :no idea.

68gtoMN 03-22-2015 02:05 PM

15 - several of my pictures, 15 is unused
16 - is for J hanger (see pic below)

9 & 10 appear to be dimples in two of my shots (see 54K mile original below) that someone opened up. Also, of note, some judges at national meets mark off points for having plastic hold-down straps on end of heater core stud. Note original position here.
