I had to go to the the local O'rielies Sunday, ball joint failure on mister gold.
I had to break out mister Judge to get parts and a a ball-joint press, ran into someone who had a 70 superbird 440 six pac 4 speed dana rear axle. I love this car they were the second owner and they were takin out for a drive in the hills. I had to get a pic.

Yessir, gotta say that is a cool car experience and Thxs for sharing & posting the pix!

Cool cars, yes. But he should have left there feeling jealous after seeing your Judge.

This one was parked at a local service shop a few years back - did a double take then had to circle back for a picture.

From what I understand there are far fewer of these than the birds right?

I think that Judge looks better.... The shop restoring my '70 Judge does a lot of Mopars and you may notice a Superbird in the background of several of my update pix. They did two recently, one was a national show winner. Cool cars. Rather have the Pontiac product though.... ;)

Yeah Chris. The '69 Daytona production was in the hundreds, closer to 2000 for the Superbird.

Superbirds and Daytons are my all time favorite! I would sell every old car I have if I thought I could buy one, but I don't think the math works right on that :-ohwell:

I remember seeing a Joe Dirt style old beater survivor Superbird/Daytona in Dallas traffic back in early 90's

I've always loved the winged cars.

The fierce competition between Chrysler and Ford back then to win on stock car tracks led to this final throwdown by Chrysler; building Chargers and Road Runners with custom, pointed noses, and ridiculously huge rear wings.

Ya gotta admire their audacity.

Some people think they're ugly, I think they're cool as heck.

If I recall correctly, 503 Dodge Daytonas built in 1969 and 1920 Plymouth Superbirds in 1970.

Here's a photo of my car back in high school when I was 17 years old- an orange 1970 440 4bbl/auto Superbird.


And my yellow 426 hemi Daytona in 1991.

I remember growing up, and seeing a new Daytona sitting on a Dodge dealers lot, in a small town in Michigan. We went through that town probably a dozen times a year, seems like that car sat there forever before it disappeared.

I recall a story that the required 500 cars to be available to the public in 1969 where short a hundred or so at count time. Perhaps NASCAR officials look the other way as some of the cars went around the building to be counted a second time!

That was the 1969 Charger 500 model not the Daytona. I think it was something like 392 built instead of 500.

I have a memory from very early childhood watching a white winged car (not sure if it was a Dodge or Plymouth) cross through the intersection at the bottom of my neighborhood - it took my breath away. I was told the doctor who lived up on the top of the hill owned it but I never saw or heard of it again.

I suppose they are past the 1988 12k buy price....

Ride along with owner in his then "Pre-Joe Dirt" yellow w blk gut '69 Daytona 440 4-spd up and down Houston TX Westheimer on a cruise night back around 1984.

It was set up drag race style w aluminum slots w 50 series tires, rear spring shackle kits w air shocks to allow tires to clear wheel openings, "Grump Lump" hood-scoop, headers and LOUD exhaust. An excellent survivor w mods that could have been easily corrected. It was a great classic that the then new "IROC Z" crowd turned up their noses at...I was the only person to take notice, strike up conversation and seemingly appreciate the car for what it was.

Way back in the mid-late 80's I was in middle school and just starting to get into muscle cars. Some lucky kid would get dropped off at school every day in a chalky orange Superbird that looked like it had been through the mill. I didn't know exactly what it was but I knew it was special. Hope his family held on to it.

1974 - I was 6yo living in Hardin MT. Remember seeing a Petty blue Superbird at the hamburger stand. Car looked like it had the sh** kicked out of it...so did the people driving it.. I thought it was cool.

1977 - I was 9yo living in Minot ND - There was a Petty blue Daytona that lived across the street from my buddys house. That car also had the holy sh** kicked out of it...and so did the owners.. I think it had "HEMI" emblems on the doors. I remember a for sale sign popping up in the 1/4 window with $2500 written on it.

1980/81 - I was 12 yo living in Spokane WA. I remember seeing a yellow Superbird parked on top of a freshly plowed snow bank. Car actually looked pretty nice.

I have no idea why I remember crap like this... but I do...

If (you can remember) it had a vinyl top it was a Bird. The Daytona did not come with vinyl.
I've been in a few of those cars with the base 440 4 bbl., and for the size they have surprising torque.

Was a 100 point type IIRC Superbird I pulled up next to on Hwy 3 on Clear Lake (Johnson Space Center NASA) area, about 2002, that was the factory red-orange w BLK vinyl top and it was running OEM skinny tires on those Grey painted Kelsey Hayses(?) alloy recalled wheels...

AS I recall... Both wing cars had a mandatory Vinyl roof on STREET cars to hide the butcher job they did while moving the rear window glass to its more 'aero -dynamic " location.

It was the Bird that had a cap (called a plug) added to relocate the back glass. Those were pretty rough and a vinyl top was the easiest/cheapest (read MOPAR) way to hide it. The Daytona used the steel structure developed for the 500 roof line that did not have the "tunneled" back glass like the regular Charger.
Find a picture of a stock street Daytona with a vinyl top, then find a picture of a stock street Bird without a vinyl top. BTW, normal B body headliners don't fit because of the roof and window change.

There is a place about a 1/4 mile from my shop in Portland, Or that used to make concrete unit steps for houses and buildings. They went out of business in the 70's and by the 80's the building outside was covered with weeds, berry vines, etc. Building was bought by an older gent. I'm told by very reliable sources that he had 7 or 8 Superbirds in that building. When he passed the "kid" sold them off and now doesn't have a pot to pee in or a window to toss it out of.

The wing on the Superbird does not appear to be as functional as the wing on the Judge....meaning - you can't use it as a workbench.

I wouldn't bet on it but I seem to remember it being white with a red stripe at the wing & without a vinyl top - so likely a Daytona.

The scene was just like the car commercials of the day, we were all playing wiffle ball in the street & heard it coming - when it pulled to the stop sign & came into view we all stood still & went silent. It rolled through the intersection and went on it's way and we just stood there staring at where it had been. I may have been 8 at the time. :D

I don't know Keith, the superbird wing seems more functional. ;)

I remember hearing the stories of these winged cars sitting in dealership lots forever because people didnt give them a second look and now they are six figure cars at auctions. If I only had a time machine

The wing was made of cast metal and had stamped steel braces that went through the trunk and bolted to the trunk floor.

If only Chrysler put that much effort into the quality of the rest of the car.

They are tougher than they look.

Able to go through childbirth; put up with car enthusiast husbands, do long term househould financial planning, etc.

There are several (two?) Daytonas known with dealer-installed vinyl tops.

Yes, dealers installed all kinds of things to make a sale, or if the customer wanted to pay extra for them. Sun roofs, pin stripes, mud flaps, etc.

Seem like a good investment! I should get one, or two for the back of my Firebird ;)

Installing a vinyl top on a Daytona is a completely different breed, especially considering they were not built to have vinyl tops from the factory.
