Timing/Tuning/Engine temps - Thread for giving and getting tips
ok, so based on the 2,300+ views and 150 replies to my last thread, I'm starting this one. That thread evolved from what I thought was a low oil PSI issue to a tuning thread. Long story short: suddenly higher engine temps were causing lower oil pressure and that had me freaked out. That lead to a timing/tuning discussion that I am finally bringing to it's own thread to help me and many others. If you decide to go back to that link, you may want to start at the end and work you way forward to skip the oil related issues/comments.
So, here are my basics now: My engine generally runs around 180. Cooler when outside temps are cool. Under extreme conditions in high summer, maybe it hit 195*. I changed from a Holley DP to a brand new Cliff Ruggles Qjet and also started messing with vacuum advance. This started sending my engine temps soaring and my oil pressure plummeting. So let's get back to basics. Here are my timing stats: I was running 14* initial. My mechanical curve looks like this: 14* @ 700 RPM 22 @ 1,500 30 @ 2,000 36 @ 3,500 (and that was as high as the timing went) I had added a Crane adjustable vacuum advance and was really adding a ton of timing, about 22* on MVA. The more timing I added, the cooler the car ran, but I was getting surging at a steady 3,000 RPM on the highway only with vacuum advance connected (either ported or MVA). So today as temps ran up to 210* on the highway on an 84* day, the car was actually running well aside from the temps. So I came home and adjusted timing as follows: 10* @ 700 RPM 20 @ 1,500 27 @ 2,000 35 @ 3,500 (plus or minus a degree) With vacuum advance it's as follows (I did MVA at idle to get a reading but ran it ported): 22* @ 700 36 @ 1,500 42 @ 2,000 45 @ 3,000 and above Note that when I drove it hard, lots of WOT blasts without vacuum advance, it ran well both starting at 14* and 10*, so I left it at 10. I can't hot-start the car with more than 14* initial even with my mini starter without lots of kickback. I adjusted the APT on the carb per Cliff's advice, turning it CCW 1/2 turn from where he set it, and with the 10* initial, my surge problem is cured as far as I can tell. I get little to no ping at partial throttle. It sounded like no ping, but MAYBE there was a tiny bit if I really lugged it around. The car idles really smoothly now at 10* with ported advance. It also idles smoothly with MVA. The only problem now is that the temps were soaring up to 210* all day! HELP! Suggestions welcome from pros. And as we clearly saw in the last thread, there is a big need for this advice. My engine specs (receipts here (just ignore some of the incorrect info on the Warren receipts about engine specs) and summary of the car here): 469 cid Butler stroker kit (17cc dish pistons), 9.3:1 CR. #46 heads worked with Ferrea Valves (Int: 2.11; Exh: 1.77) flowing 255 CFM. XE274 cam plus 1.65 rockers. Intake: Edelbrock Prototype P4B-Q4 Extensively Ported. Aluminum radiator and electric fan. So, what do you think of my timing curve? What can I do to get more timing in (which lowers engine temps)? I'm running Evan's Waterless Coolant so I'm not so worried about running 210* in an emergency, but clearly the engine was running at 180* before and will if I throw tons of timing at it, but then it surges both clod and at steady 3,000 RPM. My question is how to tune it to get the temp down like it was before the new carb and timing changes.
I don't think we need to dive too deeply into my cooling system since I can get the temps down by adding a lot of timing but that was causing poor driveability. My two speed electric fan is from a Ford Taurus. It's got a thermostat switch to turn it on around 170 and a manual switch to select the speed. It's working normally. I don't know about my impeller. |

Drain that Evans Coolant out and replace with water and glycol antifreeze mix (preferably 33% antifreeze, if you're not going to drive it below 15 degrees) and I think your running hot problem will be solved. I tried that Evans and had same symptoms. Went back to water/glycol mix and temps are fine.

My reply may have been too brief. If you read up a lot on the Evans Coolant and talk to their techs,you will find that your guage temps will most likely go up but "not to woryy their product is taking more heat out of engine". I didn't like that when I tried it and was trying to eliminate a slight hot weather ping. Evans made that much worse and to bring guage temps down I too had to add timing also, to the point of surge at cruise. I wasn't going to put up with that so I drained the Evans out, put 33% ethylene glycol/distilled water back in, backed my timing down to the tune I had before and the engine was happy with and the guage temps came back down to a level I was comfortable with and never tried Evans again.

It's not that Evan's. I do recall what you said about the temps with Evan's, however, I installed the stuff exactly a year ago this week, so the temps were lower all last year even with Evan's

So Adam: You just threw a q-jet on and have no idea on air/fuel ratio! Start with the basics. Get your initial and total timing straightened up and your air/fuel ratio taken care off. You can always add a bit of vacuum advance down the road. 180 temp is great for a Pontiac engine. I find once you start heading over 200 degrees I would get nervous.

Thanks for the input fellas. I always appreciate it. I was trying to avoid adding more variables. The Evan's was installed last May and I never ran hot like this with it. So I'm hesitant to throw it out right now, especially since it won't boil over until 375* as I recall, and there's little to no pressure in the system with it so I'm less likely to blow a hose, even at 210*.
Ben, Good point, especially about the impeller. I was just having a hard time considering new things that were constants. But maybe they were already on the verge of not working before (ie, the impeller issue) and now that I'm tuning more, it's affecting other things like the cooling. I dunno. But I'm willing to rule that out. So I'll go back and re-read 66 pages of impeller chatter (is there a a suggested page to start my reading on that thread?) As for the electric fan, I can't imagine how the fan or it's shroud could hinder highway cooling when the fan is running on high, yet it would sufficiently cool while standing still. Remember, I can manually set the fan to LOW, HIGH, or OFF. It's normally on LOW. In terms of tune, it's running well now, just hot. Idle is smooth, surge is gone, ping is gone, pulls strongly at WOT. So I'll start with the impeller research as I said. Again, if you know what page or post to start on that may shorten my research time, I'd greatly appreciate that info! EDIT: Charles, the Qjet was built by Cliff to my exact engine specs, so it's not like it was an off the shelf unit. He's given me some guidance on what and how to adjust, and maybe I'll dyno it to see the power and also the A/F ratios. I've been planning on doing that this Spring anyway. Thanks, as always, |

The link to buying the right replacement part is bad and I didn't see the actual brand and P/N written that is the preferred pump. Can someone supply that? I'd like to buy the right one as long as I'm taking mine off. (I assume it's prudent to put a new one on as long as I'm taking mine off to check the clearances. Cheap enough). I think I have an 11 hole water pump. This is a hodge-podge of parts that I didn't build, so who knows! Also, what's all that talk about how far on the blade is pressed down onto the shaft? Summarizing the cooling issue: the cooling system needs to be correct to start. Impeller-to-housing clearance is a BIG part of that. You need to make sure it's correct. Fan fully into the shroud, my opinion, is the next step. Tuning the engine for best efficiency comes next.

I guess I have been real lucky for the last 53 years.The ONLY over heating issues I have really ever had was related to timing.Retarded timing was the issue.I have never checked clearance on any of my water pumps.I have used 4 bolts(still have one running,8 bolts and 11 bolts.Had a little issue with my 62 GP once in high heat weather and extended traffic idle untill I put a shroud on it.Tom

Pull it and see what you got now (clearance/impeller type). Go from there.

yup. I may just order the new FlowKooler part so I have it on hand should I decide to install it. I like the idea of the new part assuming no one has had problems with them. The brand that I read (on Summit's reviews) that was not great is Milodon. The FloKoolers have good reviews.
If it works, I'm all in. I also like the look of the aluminum pump to match my aluminum intake and my new but not-yet-installed RobbMc fuel pump. All I need next is aluminum heads! LOL (NOT!!!) |
I believe you will find impeller clearance is specific to the pump in hand. MANY variables out there.
Don't buy a pump unless you need one (impeller type), then maybe you can get you some non magnetic cyl heads...sooner than later! The extra pump you have is probably fine, there is drag from the seal. |

~sigh~ .. Ok, first, one needs to approach things methodically, instead of shotgun approach or stabbing in the dark. Also need to note the changes you make, and any differences those changes made. Troubleshooting 101.
When it comes to impeller clearances, EVERY water pump needs to have the impeller clearances checked upon assembly, and if it's a GROSS discrepancy, then it certainly needs to be corrected. Because of tolerances in manufacturing of pumps, housings, how far the impeller is pressed on the shaft, etc, are all over the place, which directly effects the clearance. You can get lucky, and in a lot of circumstances the clearances are fine, but, it's always good to check. And just because you clearance it once, when you change a pump, you have to recheck the clearance. Changing the gasket can have an impact, need to choose the same thickness gasket next time, so here again is a good time to be taking notes. IF, if you are suffering cooling issues, and nothing you do seems to correct them, then checking the clearance is one step in troubleshooting the issue. In this case though, it was running cooler before a change was made, so IMO, the pump clearance isn't the problem here. If it were, it would be hot all the time. Just trying to approach this logically. A fan can block air flow on the highway and not at idle. Blade design, shroud, etc, can all effect flow across the core at different speeds. It's best to have a shroud design that has pressure reliefs if the area of the fan doesn't cover 80+% of the core. Another thing, running an electric fan over like 50 mph does nothing for cooling, and it can block more flow than not running. As an example, if a fan moves 3000cfm, and at 60 mph air flows through the core at 5000cfm, where does the rest of the air go? (don't ponder that too hard, it's just an example) "I changed from a Holley DP to a brand new Cliff Ruggles Qjet and also started messing with vacuum advance. This started sending my engine temps soaring and my oil pressure plummeting. " Ok, engine water temps do effect oil temps, which in turn does effect oil psi. But. There are still times where oil temps are going to rise, like extended periods on the highway. And unless there are other factors, oil temps will eventually be in a 'range' while in operation, and it shouldn't be enough to drastically effect oil psi. My understanding there was a gauge issue that caused the oil psi inconsistencies in the other post, but I would have to go back and reread, memory isn't serving me as well as it used to! A real quick comment when it comes to carbs. You can't have someone 'setup' your carb to your engine's exact 'specs' and expect it to work perfectly the moment you bolt it on. That's not how it works. It can be very close, but it's ALWAYS going to need minor adjustments, there's just too many variables. So what does this leave? What has changed that made a difference in your cooling concerns? Timing. " I can't hot-start the car with more than 14* initial even with my mini starter without lots of kickback." Ok first if your mini starter doesn't turn that engine over at like 14 or 16 degrees of initial timing and it's dragging or kicking back, you have electric issues or a bad starter. Check the cables, connectors, load test the battery, etc, go over the starter system and make sure everything is up to par. Crappy battery cables or a crappy battery is my guess on your setup, sounds like you would have taken care of anything else in that system, have pretty good attention to detail. Put a remote sol on it too which is a good idea anyway. You definitely have a hot start problem in the starter system. So back to timing and the curve. I'm thinking that engine may need a lot of lead, maybe chamber design, SCR, intake, whatever, but giving it the benefit of the doubt. Give it to it then. Use as much initial as the starter can handle. That of course is taking into account the system is up to par. I'm guessing 16 - 20 isn't out of the question, and to a mini starter that is cake. Increasing initial means you have to limit total, so keep that in mind. The total max should be one of the first things determined. Once you have initial determined, total determined, then it's just rate you have to deal with. Once that's done, THEN do vacuum. Give it as much as it wants/can take until you have ping, then back off. The areas you should use for testing that, which is while driving by the way, is like with 2 people in the car, full tank of gas, and going up and down hills. Usually, when you throw more timing at an engine at idle, the idle speed goes up, meaning you have to adjust idle speed. I haven't heard you comment on any changes to idle speed being made through all these changes, are you making any? And also, going up 100 rpm isn't a bad thing, and can also help some with idle temps. Most of my cars idle at 900-950 to give you an idea. How are you checking rpm? (since it came up) I'm still not clear on whether or not the numbers you're getting with your light are right, still sounds like something is askew. I noticed you don't have an HEI module in the dizzy, so guess you're running an MSD or similar box? You know some timing lights don't work right with some boxes, right? Maybe take a pic of your timing marks too. On the timing cover. Tell us what kind of box you have, and the settings on the box. . |
I'll admit I didn't read all the thread (lots of stuff here! Probably good stuff too!), but my observations on my Skylark, with EFI and a live dash cluster showing most the data the EFI system is seeing and commanding. My observations of influences are generally at idle because always running lean at cruise and my radiator is large and well shrouded (with 7-blade clutch fan) so never have noticed a temperature issue at speed.
AFR matters, particularly at idle. I see a 5ºF coolant temp change with 1 point of AFR change. Same timing and idle speed. If I am idling at 14.0:1 it runs 5ºF warmer than idling at 15.0:1. There are times when lean conditions can cause overheating, but that is typically under load and bad news for exhaust valves, etc. I've never experienced a lean condition at idle that cause my coolant temps to go up. Timing matters, particularly if you are idling rich. I have active idle control that involves retarding or advancing the ignition advance to meet the intended idle speed so it waivers a bit, but before that I did notice in general if I was idling above ~23º, the engine ran warmer. Pulling the timing back to 15º-18º, it ran cooler. I've never had to little timing at idle cause an overheating condition, nor too much at cruising speed cause a temperature issue that I've noticed (At light cruise I run around 45º advance at 2,400rpm). If I was running mid-20's timing and below 14.0:1 idling it would easily run 10ºF hotter than normal, perfect storm'ish (and actually what it intentionally does to speed up engine warm up). It normally ran right at 185ºF, so would poke at 200ºF sitting at idle in this scenario, but with leaner AFR's and reduced timing it would stay right at 185ºF. With the proper timing and tune, I've idled in stop and go Las Vegas traffic in ~120ºF weather, where I was dying in the car, but the car was idling fine at ~185º-190ºF. In 2013, when I had the A/C system working, I was in surface street rush hour in Denver and it was 103ºF according to a bank clock, and I was sitting cool in the car with the windows up, A/C on and coolant temps still in the 185º-190ºF range. I changed thermostat's last fall and now it runs right at 180ºF, so shows the new thermostat is calibrated better than the old. I still don't expect any great temperature swings going into this summer. As for water pump efficiency, I don't have any real experience with the Pontiac engines, but the OE timing cover I originally had on my Skylark had massive pitting and general ugliness behind the water pump that caused me to over heat at idle, or at least run far warmer than I'd like it too. Then I installed a new aftermarket timing cover, no other changes, and the coolant temps were brought under control and have been reliable ever since. So does show water pump impeller tolerances are pretty important, especially for slow speed efficiency. |

I had a timing light that didnt like my ignition box, showed much less timing than was truly there. I realized it because the engine would start breaking up when above 3000rpm (too much timing). Tried a different timing light and was showing 10+ more degrees than the first light.

One time I saw four timing lights hooked up to Larry Larson's Nova (Drag Week 2011!) and there was a 5º spread on what they were reporting!!
My craftsman dial back light hasn't led me astray yet. It matches up with the megasquirt's commanded timing every time, and it's easily back checked against the crank trigger wheel tooth count and degree marks on harmonic balancer. |

Everyone's magic bullet for cooling is NOT the same.....I futzed around with mine for many years ... Only to find out that the radiator made the biggest difference... This was after all the usual bull:
Snake waters Thermostats Pumps Clearancing impeller Fuel Timing/curves/distributors Carbs Intakes Separate trans coolers Fans Clutches Etc...etc...etc...etc...etc Had my radiator take a dump and tried a two row 1.25 inch tube aluminum radiator and wham, 25degree drop...that was years ago, never had a problem since You have to find what works for your combo...and that's where the game starts! |

Mine is a 2 core and that's is all I need for my HP with twin thermos . Remember HP means heat so good coolants my timing 14 - 42 no vac advance and no issues 185temp unless I am getting up her then turn on 2 fan and the temp comes back down . |
When you say 'no vacuum advance added', do you mean that it's not connected to a vacuum port? Or you're just removing what you believe the can is adding?
Without the vacuum advance connected to a vacuum port, you should see a linear change of total when changing the initial. Something is still askew. Slight variation in the timing as you mentioned is normal, can be caused by a slight amount of slack in the timing chain, for one. But when you read the marks, your line of sight should be 90 degrees from the centerline of the crank, through the balancer, and the 0 timing mark on the cover. And again, you may want to verify TDC with the marks, just to be sure. . |
When I wrote "no vacuum advance added," yes, I meant it was disconnected and plugged so I could measure mechanical advance alone.
Also, I took a closer look at my Taurus electric fan setup. Well, it sucks. The OEM fan and shroud was just stuck on there using those push-through zip ties. It covers most of my aluminum radiator's 21"x18" surface area, but there are plenty of gaps around the sides of it and the top. I saw on Summit's video that a V8 should have at least 4,500 CFM, yet there are almost no fans that high and I don't have the room for two fans, so not sure how to achieve that. Also read that the Taurus fan on HIGH mode is supposed to push that much air, but others feel that's not accurate. We'll see. I do try and look 90* from the centerline as you stated when reading timing. I'll find and measure and verify the timing marks on my balancer too. (what brand is that? "PB" is PowerBond?) Ok, NOW it's starting to make some sense. Where did that timing mark come from that's on the timing cover? That's one issue there, so first thing, you need to verify TDC and the mark on the cover.
So that's a late model, no timing mark cover. One option is to swap a cover that has the timing marks, other option is to verify the mark. That thing could be, and probably is, way off. Not sure, but think someone makes a billet timing mark for those covers, but you would still have to verify TDC. Wow, that fan doesn't cover much of the core, and yes, all the gaps/leaks are just sucking air from the engine compartment, and not through the core. Ok, 21x18 surface area, like you mean that's the core size? Are you measuring from tank to tank? Can you take a pic from the engine compartment side towards the radiator and get the whole radiator in the shot? This one is close, though is slightly larger, but bet it could be fitted. I'll verify the timing mark. I assume the builder (my old friend) made that mark.
The radiator surface area (fin area) is 21x18. The outside dimensions are about 26x18.5x2.25". Note that I only have about 3.5" of clearance between the radiator and the front of the pulley, so that fan won't fit. (I looked at it last night on Summit and couldn't find anything that would fit and flow that much cfm.) I'll snap a pic later this evening. EDIT: I've got a Summit order pending. Well, there should be a way to move the rad outward some, or would think so. You could also probably trim the shroud some too.
Not to mention that the highest part it the fan motor, and on the dual fans those are offset from the centerline, which could clear the water pump. That's probably where you measured from, right? Did you measure to the fins or the tanks? Here's a Black Magic, I've heard and seen good things with these, and draw 3300: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/flx-188/overview/ It's a single fan, and pretty sure you could trim the shroud by a half inch. It's 4.188 deep, but that is in the middle being a single fan. You can make something work for sure. Ask others with the same body style what they use to get ideas. . |
Thanks for the links. Yes, I measured the core (the fins) area. And yes, I measured from the fins to the bolts on the water pump pulley as best I could with the current fan in place. My current fan is offset perfectly so that it sits next to the pulley. I'll check this all out and report back, with pics.
Probably most importantly is that I need to verify my timing marks before continuing. I see that now. Then I'll move on to carb and timing tuning again. |
I'm running a trimmed up HHR fan on my Firebird. So far it works like a champ. Been in stop and go traffic in 90ºF weather and did not have an issue with coolant temp.

I just ditched my Taurus fan, and will never go back. It seemed to blow good air at idle, but I speculate that it might inhibit high speed air flow. And since I can't do the back of the hand flow-meter test at 60 mph, I can really only speculate.;) |
