'70 TA's are everywhere...?

I don't know what's up, but it seems like 1970 TA's are falling from trees recently. There was one at Mecum Indy last week that was an automatic which bid to $54k and no sale. There is the one posted on this forum that will be at Mecum Seattle that is also an auto.

There also is now one on ebay with a BIN of $65K. You guessed it, another auto car.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pontiac-Tran...m=221776673802

And then yet another '70 also on ebay that is a bit of a restomod done by Mascar and being sold at RK Motors. Yet another auto (yes that is 4), and listed on RK's site for $89K.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pontiac-Fire...m=221777179740

Any thoughts on the 2 ebay cars? How about the one that was a no sale at Mecum Indy? Did anyone get a chance to look at it?

72projectbird 05-19-2015 11:12 PM

I'll never get tired of 70 T/A's. I say let them continue to fall from the trees!

I was checking out that one RK has. The pictures make the color look funky.

Bentwheelbob 05-19-2015 11:22 PM

Yeah, it looks a little aqua in all but a few pictures. I assume since Mascar did it the color is correct...., but who knows?

AkCamaro 05-20-2015 04:37 AM

I think it's just the time of year for selling classic cars. Their are currently FIVE 73 Trans Am's on ebay. Typically their is just one or two.

Forget those flared out units lets look at the bare boned power houses ;)

Some of those cars have more time on eBay/Mecum auctions/ transports, then on own power torching roads where they belong. No one wants them?

I think they've reached that point Mike where they get tucked away like rare bottles of wine, only to be talked about & not touched. ;)

Hey Brewster!! Man I have always wanted that exact Formula. Too bad on the price :( (for me). Great for the Formula community lol. Back in the late 80s early 90s I worked at a Pontiac Dealership here in San Antonio while I was in high school. One of the mechanics had that exact car. Guy was in his early to mid 40s at the time had long hair etc... He drove it to work almost every day. The paint on his car was sunburnt and faded but the original factory stripe was still on it and it was as straight as an arrow. Car was just complete and great shape sans the badly faded paint. It was also a 455 HO car. I was in awe of it back then being a teenage kid that was already obsessed with Pontiacs. I tried to get him to sell it to me several times and he never would. I moved on to other jobs and never saw the car again but I hope its still in the area. If I ever find it....

I think that's the car that Motoexotica has been trying to sell for 6 months or so. Wrong fenders and the wrong color. If it's the same car it was originally Quoizel Gold.

Notwithstanding that, nice looking ride.

Bob,
I didn't think the Mecum car was that nice of a restoration. They didn't announce whether it was "born with" engine & drivetrain or not which usually indicates it's not. The seller wanted $60k

Bentwheelbob 05-21-2015 07:40 AM

Doug - Thanks for getting us back on track. It seems like the shark tank is on vacation right now.

Thoughts on the Ebay cars? I kind of like the one in Birmingham. Strange there are no underhood pictures and the shaker has no call outs..

RamAir 05-21-2015 08:20 AM

Bob, the Michigan car is pretty nice, you do wonder what they're hiding under the hood. There is not supposed to be call outs on shakers in 70 unless it's a RamAir IV.
The RK car doesn't do much for me, not my cup a tea.

IMHO, if it were meant to run the strip on a budget, the Formula was the winner.

I read the seller's story on the car at the bottom of the auction, and the reference to it having been orange with tweed interior when he bought it jogged my memory. Attached pics are what it looked like in 2007...

Bentwheelbob 05-22-2015 10:12 PM

The guy definitely gets this weeks honesty award. The prison part is priceless.

Probably not the smartest thing to tell people when your selling a car.

bossbirdta 05-22-2015 11:53 PM

....this latest one is defiantly a Bird of a different feather.....no doubt there has been some $$$ spent in trying to save it....poor thing.....

71GP76TA 05-23-2015 12:09 AM

Has '80/'81 gauges.. He would've been better off leaving the aftermarket gauges in it IMO. Looks like its loaded with bondo too.....check out the R/R 1/4 around the marker light..

He's gonna lose his a$$ on this one...

10 bolt posi? 8)

72projectbird 05-23-2015 08:56 PM

That thing actually looked pretty cool in orange. The tweed interior screams late 80's early 90's build. The paint on the wheel wells was an interesting choice.

REEDRACER 05-24-2015 12:33 PM

At least the guy admits he needs to sell it to help make a better life for him. But man that car is messed up! The office furniture when it was orange, was yuck!

Brewster 05-24-2015 02:46 PM

A pumpkin with a blueberry interior, Wow

Bentwheelbob 05-26-2015 08:52 PM

Well, I had a deal to buy this car, but upon inspection pulled back. All the mechanical parts checked out correct PN and date, but the master cylinder, even the starter. However, the left fender and hood were late model, and the shaker had no markings. I think the car got hit on the left and the fender, hood, and shaker had to be replaced. A beautiful car that someone will be very happy with, but not me. Here is the link and inspection report.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pontiac-Tran...m=221776673802

All 4 wheels are JW dated 1/26.

70 22387 NOR 719439
201 26 26
02C WS4

Engine:

R- Head #12 dated A280
L- Heads #12 dated A280
Intake -9799068 dated A220

Carb:

7040270 0080 WA

Alt.: 1100902 A270

Starter: part number ends in 436 9M22

Rearend: COX 12 bolt

Left fender and hood are not correct, Hood has four rectangular holes in front inner structure. Date under hood is A232

Brake booster is painted instead of plated.

Small paint chip on left rear trunk spoiler end.

scratch on right rear corner of back bumper.

Left fender alignment to door is not right, too wide of gap toward the bottom.

front bumper alignment to fenders on ends could be better.

minor paint touch up on center of front nose.

saw pic of vin. number of block and it matches.

Small coolant leak at timing cover where it meets the block, may seal with stop leak or need fixed.

Leak found at rearend chunk, not sure if it is rear gasket or what.

The car is a nice looking car with lots of correct parts. It would need some work to be concourse show. Paint looks good overall. Places noted in this report detail any problems with finish.

I could not see AMP on the shaker, could have been covered up or something.

Gauges worked when driven.

Rear Roll Pan bottom edge was not painted and can be seen from the ground.

Judge273 05-27-2015 01:35 PM

That's a good inspection report!

Few questions...

How can you see starter numbers without removing it?
Trans has matching vin too?
Rear usually has date too?
Like to check date on block, engine code, and look at other things just in case it's been tampered.

Sounds like it checked out good, and you're looking for a concourse?

What are you interested in mostly?

The Boss 05-27-2015 07:58 PM

Mike,

We know that Bob's going to take it all apart anyways, but for that much money he didn't want to take it that far apart. Ya know? :noidea:

Starter - couldn't see the whole number, but saw enough using a mirror to be comfortable
Trans - couldn't see trans due to exhaust and placement in tunnel
Axle - could only verify COX code and that it was a 12 bolt. Given everything else it seems a reasonable bet to assume date code was good.
Block - VIN was verified as was YZ code. Couldn't see date code even with mirror, but given VIN match, and date code match on heads, intake, right ex manifold, alt, and distributor, that too seemed a safe bet

Probably not a concourse, but for what you would have been in on this money wise after replacing hood, shaker, fender top, stripes, MC, fuel line, fixing spoiler chip, re painting rally II's and buying polys, et cetera, you would have been into it for concourse money with no room left. Pay transport, taxes, licensing and you are upside down.

It's a really nice car, but what really bothered me was that within 30 seconds of opening the hood any reasonably bright Fbody guy was going to be asking about the hood and fender.

You nailed it. What's the fun if you can't tear a perfectly good car apart and make it a little better. That's about the only thing keeps me sane with the BS I have going on at work. The problem is I don't do body work, and replacing the hood and fender top are going to open up a whole can of paint and body issues.

I need to get back on the Gold Car, but me, MPD and the W72 need to take a little road trip before that can happen, and time is in short supply during the week for me right now.

bird72 05-29-2015 01:01 PM

I don't usually shark tank cars, but a couple things just made me chuckle here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pontiac-Fire...m=221780189483
1) The vinyl case placed in all dash shots over we all know: "The Hole". Whoops, I didn't mean to leave my sunglasses over that hole, sorry about that!
2) It looks like 4 or 5 cans of splatter (maybe) paint exploded in the trunk. Kinda creepy.

Wow. .That's a decent chuck of coin for that car, $48K!
Wrong honeycomb caps
Terrible CD player in dash
Wrong spoiler ends
