'71-72 Grand Prix rear bumper closeout panel
 

I know a proper (plastic) rear license plate pocket panel has been made for 71-72 GPs before. It may come back on the market (or not). Someone has made a formed metal pocket and posted it on Ebay. Not Cheap. Just a FYI for 71- 72 GP owner with missing rear plate pockets.

I don't know of anyone who has reproduced the 71-72 style in plastic. They do make the 69-70 style.

If someone has current info on the Ames license plate pocket , please post. Also the Ebay listing I mentioned seems to have vanished. Supply & demand issues.. I,m not sure.

What is the correct finish for a '72? Is it the natural, molded-in-gray color?

I too have a fiberglass one that I bought years ago via Ames and to date have never installed it. For what it's worth there has been an ad in the POCI Smoke Signals magazine for many months now. It reads as follows:

71 72 been mostly out of luck but for recently the metal ones on ebay , I got extreamly lucky and got a NOS a week after I bought a fiberglass one

I have the ebay aluminum one and fit and finish is perfect minus the air shock hole

Is anyone here able to get a copy of the original GM drawing of this 71-72 license plate pocket?

If you find one see if they have the front air dam drawings too, that would cover both unicorn parts on 71-72

With some legible original drawings, I could model both parts in Autodesk Inventor...

i actually knew the guy named dean from vermont who made the cast and reproduced the bumper pocket for the 69 70. i gave him the bumper to test fit it and it came out perfect. i lost contact with him about five years ago or maybe longer

Wow That's strong money! I have an NOS one that you now have me thinking of selling.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd toss this out there. I'm looking for one of these close out panels for my 72. it can be one of the AMES reproductions that weren't that great, or one of the aluminum ones. Mine is just reaching end of life. I realize NOS or nice used is pretty much a no go, but if anyone knows where I might get any of these, please let me know. Thanks.

For those who may not be aware, Ames is now selling a 3D reproduction that is pretty nice. Much more like the original than the old ones they sold years ago.

Just bought one of the new Ames repro parts. Just wanted to reiterate that it should be painted argent silver before installing, correct?

My original was damaged and repaired (poorly), so wasn't sure what it should be.

I believe so. I painted my new one silver. Looks good. I recommend test fitting first and to be gentle. My bumper is a rechrome and one side of the opening was tighter than the other. I found the repro to break if stressed. I am still very impressed with the product. Just don't try to force anything. It looks great installed. I bought a spare in the event I need to replace it. Sometimes I want things perfect. But it's been a long wait and I'm happy to have it! Ames rules.
