CV-1 535 finally on the pump

Finally we are on the pump today and the first few pulls are in. This motor is a continuation of the 505 build after we kicked out the rods so we opted to go with a 4.5" crank since the 4.25" crank was junk. Attached below is the last Dyno sheet for today. The intake is a standard single 4150 low rise with an adapter to accept a Dominator carb on race gas. The jetting was pretty close right off the shelf so it wasn't touch and timing is set at 28 degrees. We are very pleased to have hit the 906hp @ 7000 and 782tq @ 5200 so early. Monday we will switch to EFI on the low rise and then put the R manifold w EFI on to see what we end up with race gas wise. After that the E85 fuel will be tested and compared to the VP-c14.

Here is a link to the thread on my board with the history and details of this motor if interested.

Congrats!

Great looking numbers, should be a lot more in it.

:)

PAUL K 09-20-2015 06:11 PM

Good job!

Tom Vaught 09-20-2015 06:12 PM

Congrats on getting some pulls in on your engine.

EFI should not buy you any real HP over the carb (ask Marcella on that deal) if the carb and EFI are tuned right. That being said the EFI should drive much better at the lower rpm (cruise, transient, off idle conditions).

Nice Job!

Nice job Alex. Gotta feel good about getting back on the pump.

BruceWilkie 09-20-2015 09:54 PM

Nice Alex. I see a nice wide power curve there too...nice!

Jack Gifford 09-21-2015 02:31 AM

Power still climbing at 7,000- nice.
I guess you have a reason for being at [only] 28 degrees ignition timing?

pontibeast 09-21-2015 02:49 AM

Congrats on the numbers, gives me something to dream of when I start building my 428 next year, shooting for about half of what I am guessing you will end up on with your final tune. Hope you get it in the car soon so we can se some track numbers.

On my cv1 motor, it made peak power at 28 degrees. Picked up 15 hp dropping from 32 to 28 iirc.

PONTIAC DUDE 09-21-2015 10:03 AM

Glad your build is finally going great. I know you have had a lot of issues over the past few years and thumbs up to ya dude.

Congrats Alex. No doubt you've had a rough road to get where your at now. Hope the motor makes it off the pump and into your car so you can get back to racing!

Are you still trying to suck up to get a your free set of CV2s?

:)

Jim Robertson 09-23-2015 12:13 AM

Nice sticktoitness. "Congrats" had already been used. Should propel the car that's attached very easily. . Very cool piece. Enjoy.

trying. have not seen them yet!

mike leech 09-23-2015 01:22 PM

great start.... run it to 8000 so we can see peak and average. Great looking start. Were are you dynoing at?

LiL Jack 09-23-2015 05:09 PM

Why did you stop at 7k?

Did u make any pulls past that?

60man 09-23-2015 09:30 PM

Cool Alex!!!
Nice numbers.
Any plans for trying E85?

Good luck Monday on the new tests, Alex!

Congrats on the progress. Can't wait to see it in the car and on the track.

Thank you all for the kind words, it has been a long and hard road to get here and it is all worth it . These dyno sheets I just put up are from Monday. The 913hp/765tq was with the low rise / 1050 dominator at 30 degrees timing. The R manifold was bolted on with the same 1050, note this manifold is as cast other than the port matching to the unaltered intake gaskets. With that we had got 940hp/825tq. This is still only carbs right now but time just wasn't in our favor as I am all of you know how that goes. We did get one pull on e85 (1250 carb) before the dist. rotor came apart ending the night early. with a careful 27 degree timing and short pull we got 956hp @6500 and 831tq @ 5600.

johnta1 09-24-2015 01:24 PM

Cool!

Good looking numbers.

After competing on methanol for close to 20 seasons, I'd say you needn't be terribly "careful" with ignition timing on E85. Looking forward to the numbers!

jdw_poncho 09-25-2015 03:03 PM

Looks good.

Aaron Quinton 09-26-2015 09:46 PM

Great job Alex, the combination is efficient and doing a good job. Well done sir and congrats!

Jack I am sure you are right but this was a new carb and really didn't know how close/far off it might had been out of the box.

Mark Sullen modded the carb for E85 so I will give him a call today to review what we have right now.

WARPed 09-28-2015 10:52 AM

A few have asked about EGT's, we didn't use them this time as there are a few issues with some probes but reading the plugs for both the lowrise and the R manifold read perfect across the board.

mysticmissle 09-28-2015 07:40 PM

Mark what size dominator did you end up with? I have a sullens 1250 and it is impressive

Flyin79bird 09-29-2015 12:47 PM

Alex, what's the plan? Run some local races down here at Bradenton? Which class...

bruce driggers 09-29-2015 01:59 PM

Good job Alex, Congrats

mysticmissle 09-29-2015 06:31 PM

Nah , haven't ran this year at all . The wife & I both had some health issues , hoping to start back next year. How about you , which combo are you running now?

mysticmissle 09-30-2015 01:05 PM

I have a new to me 67 bird with the motor out of gto in it. First time out last week, got a couple small things to change but it's a runner. Gto is getting 455.based motor and will see more street driving than track.

That's great , I'm particle to the 67's myself.

Sorry to have been off this thread so long, been a lot of personal stuff going on in my life of late. I would like to warn any one thinking about using VP's C-85 (their E-85 offering) I was using it as a standard for all E-85 testing. As I have found out by others including Mark Sullen after the fact :( that this fuel is very unforgiving. I tested the fuel and it is actually 60% ethanol and Mark also confirmed that it is true. So now for the update, power was a bit off the next time at the dyno so we did a leak down test and found the #8 hole was down a good bit, Mark had mentioned that the fuel can lift ring lands and it looks like this is a strong possibility here so we will pull the #8 piston and give it a look see.

Region Warrior 12-15-2015 02:24 PM

That sucks!

Tom Vaught 12-15-2015 06:38 PM

Over in the turbo forum, there is a thread somewhere about a Ford Ranger guy (two stage turbo chebby deal) that figured out a way to use the OEM (GM) Flex Fuel Sensor (from a vehicle and read very accurately the actual amount of Ethanol vs Gasoline in a sample of gas.

Deal is it has been several years ago. Threads might be under "Twin Turbo Dave".

I considered building one of the things but never got around to it.

After the New Year I can talk to Dave's Ford Buddy and get the actual info from him on what is involved in building your own OEM E-85 fuel sensor/checker.

Supposed to be a bit more accurate vs the "bottle" test.

Hang in there Alex! Merry Christmas and a better New Year.

Tom V.

ponjohn 12-15-2015 07:43 PM

I think Denmah on YB did that tom with a megasquirt (I think).

v869tr6 12-15-2015 09:18 PM

Both times I lifted ring lands and did some melting it was from going very lean, that was before I found out a stock front powervalve could get blown shut, but N/A might be totally different.
