3 on the tree move to the floor?
 

I'm looking at a car that is a manual but it's on the column. It is a 64 Catalina. I was wondering what would be involved with moving it to the floor? I've driven a three on the tree before but I think it would be more natural on the floor.

finding the correct shifter would be hard..even an aftermarket..and i doubt theres a new one avil..its a special trans in there....but other than that its as simple as cutting a hole in the floor..and bolting the shifter in

LOL, they don't have to be!!! The 65 has a much nicer ride than the earlier Pontiacs IMO and even more so once you add a fast ratio gear box, larger front sway bar and a rear one. Certainly they are larger in size and feel more like a boat, but the comfort of them on cruises as well as the improvements mentioned above to the suspension make them my choice, I know a few others that would agree ;)

Summit Racing appears to sell a Hurst Indy shifter for a 3 speed trans in a 1964 Pontiac. I put a Competition Plus shifter on the four speed transmission in my car, they had it in stock no problem.

Actually I sold the '63 because it was going to be too much to put back all Pontiac. I loved the body lines of the '63, the '64 is not as nice to me but still a good looking car. But to me it is hard to beat the ride of the '65 which I really like. Here is the '64 I was looking at. Base model car with really no options. Not even power steering or brakes. Supposed to be a 44k mile car. I cannot say he is lying or not but it has had a respray. If I could find shipping under a grand to get it here from Minnesota they I probably would have wired the money by now. Looking at the pics, what do you think its worth?

The '65 is really nice car and loaded too but it originally came from Pennsylvania but it has been in NC for 18 years. Don't know really what to do but I know that '64 needs to be shifted from the floor.

That '64 is pretty. Power steering and brakes would be useful upgrades; my car has neither and while it's not a problem going down the road, it can be a bear to parallel park. ;)

I think I saw that 64 for sale last year. I was slow on going to look at it. Looks nice. If not far from Rochester, MN, I am sure I could figure a way to put my eyes on it for you.

It is in Sleepy Eye, MN. Shipping is going to really hinder this deal though.

I went from a 3 on the tree to a four on the floor in my first pickup.

I left the original column in place and cut the "nub" off where the shift handle was. That was a perfect place to mount the Sun tach (to cover the hole).

I pinned the column in place so that it would not accidentally drop down and prevent me from getting the key out.

Mark is right: if you are not trying to be authentic then it is as easy as cutting a hole in the floor and bolting the shifter on.

^^^^ AHA! THAT sounds like a cool project to me that is exactly what you are looking for.

If I was looking for a project that would be a fun car. The reason I got rid of the 63 was the cost of the motor, to build it and the money to put tlc into it. I'll be going thru Charlotte tomorrow on my way to Winston Salem. If I change my mind I'll drop you a line.

The factory weight of a 2 door Catalina hardtop changed 2 pounds from 1964 to 65.
Grand Prix is another story though, the 65 gaining over 300 pounds.

Man, that '64 is a great looking car. If it was summer I'd suggest buying a one-way flight and driving it back. It really looks like it would make it.

To switch it to the floor would require only the hole in the floor, culumn, and to find a shifter and linkages that would work with the 3 spd. The shift delete should already be there as its already a manual car. I you decide to buy it and convert it let me know...I may be interested in the linkages/column. I am restoring a 3spd on the column car. Actually putting it back to on the column. No I don't have a floor shifter though.

Based on your other threads, I would hold off on buying until you find the car you want instead of going after whatever happens to be for sale at the moment. These cars aren't that rare and you will find what you are looking for - probably at a price you can live with - if you are patient and persistent.

i agree...youve made a strong statement you really want a 65..and if you give it some time and be ready to jump you will get the right 65 for you...they are literally everywhere...and i am a fan..but many are not and dump them when they get them..

The 64 I can't do so that's out. The Bonneville was nice but it just didn't get me excited. So I'm back to square one. I found a 66 Bonneville on the POCI site that I've inquired about so we will see. These cars are not a dime a dozen around here. I wish they were. I looked at the 65 Cat that is local and it is a mess. That 65 Bonneville was the closest thing around and it was 377 miles one way. Yesterday was a long day in the car. It's a good feeling that I'm ready to buy but the right car has to come along and it will eventually.

I like the classic site also, but have been using www.searchcraigslist.org for the way it searches the country and can be sorted by date. For items like a Pontiac 421, there are not that many returns and gives me the search I want there. For local items I just use craigslist and click search beyond the area. To each their own ;)

The more I look at this one, the more I like it. Not a fan of the top color and If I owned, it I would likely do a black vinyl top, but sure looks like a clean one.

Too much and too far away. I found a 66 Bonneville that I really like. Two problems, no power steering and had either a couple bad lifters or valves.

yes sir...i have so much going on or id have that thing, its dropped 3k since the first time i found it...it gets in the 6-7k range..and i will go get it..i have a tripower motor and a 4 speed change over that would make that thing a cool cruiser...extra 8 lugs too..lol

last year i watched a mint 66 Star Cheif start out at over 20k go all the way to 11k and almost went for it...got him to 9500...looking back i should have gotten it..such a nice low mile original ..man i should got it..med blue with that same interior

Ok I called on the Catalina and left a message. Maybe he will call back.

Snyder thinks he sees rust on the lower part of this and thinks it has been repainted. I zoomed in and may see a bubble on the lower portion of the left front fender. If that is the case, the price should go down even further.

Anyone close to this that can look it over for Hitman if he works something out on it?
