I can put you in contact with the original owner of a 91 1LE. Green in color. Less than 10,000 on the clock. He's ready to cut loose of it and might go to Mecum this May.
|
I know of the car Doug, but don't know the owner. What's his current price? Feel free to text me or email the info. [email protected]

you bag one yet

Sorry guys got home late last night, traffic in NJ was miserable - one end to the other!
1 of 46 1991 1LE Formulas 1 of 8 with T-Tops Believed to be 1 of 1 with the 1SC Option package, the highest option content of any 1LE built - Should be able to confirm this by the end of today. This car was ordered three times by it's original owner in Laramie, WY and when he got word the order would be accepted, loaded it up. He owned it until 2013 and had just moved to Florida and sold it because it didn't have A/C (mandatory delete with the 1LE option)! The second owner bought the car, had it shipped up to the Baltimore MD. area and restored it over the last 3 years & I got it from him. |
Nice.

According to GM, these cars were not supposed to be built! None of the 1,360 Camaro 1LE's were built with T-tops and none of the Firebirds were supposed to be either - but 8 Formulas and 15 Trans Ams were built - all in the 1991 model year. Here is a cheat sheet of Firebird production to help break down the numbers.
http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...4&d=1457787388 Total production for 1LE Pontiacs over the years was 104 Trans Am's and 68 Formulas for a total of 172. Of the 46 Formulas produced in 1991, 8 of those were ordered by SLP and went on to be converted into Firehawks, as did 15 of the 22 built in the 1992 model year. As for the Trans Am's, most were built for the Canadian Player's series and were export models. The 1LE cars were purpose built for racing using an unusual and well chosen combination of parts to achieve that. Adding luxury options like power windows, mirrors, locks, rear defroster & cruise control was ancillary to the goal and usually not allowed. Certainly adding t-tops to a race car would be strictly prohibited, but where Chevrolet said no, Pontiac said yes and a very few of these cars got built. I got a ton of documentation with the car including it's two page window sticker and two three ring binders with receipts, magazine articles, and other original documentation. The guy I bought it from was an accountant, and had a meticulous attitude about the car and it's documents. He gave me a thumb drive with hundreds of pictures of it's restoration, a spreadsheet with everything he spent, all of the parts removed that were replaced, etc. He even let me keep one of the plates! |

Damn...
Can't wait to hear and see more about this find. Nice find. |
Keeping my eyes out too...no unicorns yet. But, I'm hunting around town...
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/l...shnwrxklc.jpeg Nice score! |
i never knew they where so low production..i worked on a couple 1LEs when they where new...i was at a dealership at the time and the finance manager was a so called race car driver. He convinced someone above him he could drive...he started with a couple Starion ESIRs that Mitsubishi gave him... wrecked them both..and ended up with a some 1LEs, 2 firebirds then 2 camaros, and proceeded to kill them all..i fixed the firebirds a couple times and the camaros too..no one in the shop wanted anything to do with them..they where heavily caged and a booger to do anything with..so in a few years he killed 6 cars...i moved on right after he wrecked the last camaro...and i cant be sure, but i think the starions and firebirds where stripped and scrapped...

Back in the early 1990s when I worked as the tech editor at Musclecar Review, one of our editorial staff members bought a yellow 1LE directly from Pontiac and convinced them to add A/C onto the car on the assembly line. We were located in central Florida and there was no way the project could go ahead in that kind of climate without A/C on the vehicle. Since the guys at Pontiac really wanted to see some press on the car and the car was going to appear in several issues of the magazine, they agreed to the request. It has all the paperwork to back it up. As far as I know he still owns the car. That would make it a definite one of one.
|
If you can get the VIN for that car Steve I can verify it - would be VERY cool to find that Pontiac built some with A/C as well. Rumor has it two of the 1989 TA's got A/C and one of them was supposed to be in the DC area about 10 years ago.

I almost had a JY 92 Formula 305 5sp TTOP 1LE with A/C and cd player ordered back in the day. (still have the order form, it was going to get the SLP goodies dealer installed too. Was a bit young and needed a cosigner, had money down, dad was on board and then he finally really read the options....... It didn't get it ordered but I still have the order sheet. Greg found me a car that was 1-2 options shy of my original order, even has dealer SLP parts installed and dealer documents of that! |
So update on production numbers, the car is not 1 of 1 with the 1SC package, 6 of the 8 with t-tops came equipped this way so not rare by that measure.
Another factoid we discovered is that 9 of the 46 came equipped with C60 Air Conditioning, none of them were t-top models however. Amazing amount of documentation came with the car, original key ring with dealer tag on it and all of the key knock-outs, original title with lien from GMAC, GM Media Archives documentation, all of the e-mails between the 1st two owners on the sale, original order dealer documents - I'll post up more pictures later. |

One of 46 is still fairly low production and with 1LE it's good company to be in.
Like my 1 of 43 89 formula 350 verts. One of 4 with a top color other than black, 2 tan 2 dark blue. Mine is the only dark blue top left, the other was totaled early. |

When it rains it pours! I looked at this car a year ago and patience & persistence finally paid off. Not a 1LE but equipped nearly identically to one, 68,000 miles, two owner car owned by this guy for 17 years. 1990 was the shortest production year of any Firebird, and only 480 of the LB9/MK6/G92 cars were built - and this one has T-tops & A/C. :D

305 TPI, 5 speed manual, performance rear.
|
Mike's got it, same drive line as the 1LE except this one doesn't have the aluminum drive shaft.
LB9 305 Tuned Port Induction engine - When equipped with the MK6 it got the better L98 (350) Cam Shaft MK6 World Class T5 with the different 5th gear (not overdrive) G92 Performance Gear package 3:42 Rear gears which also included the KC4 Engine Oil Cooler Car also has the G80 Posi Rear, J65 4 Wheel Disc Brakes, N10 Dual Cat Exhaust (free flowing) with 3" rear pipe, and the N64 Aluminum lightweight spare. What the 91 has that this car doesn't is A/C delete, special front spindles for larger outboard wheel bearings, the Borg Warner Corvette calipers, the larger Caprice rotors, the previously mentioned aluminum drive shaft and some have argued a different chip. |
Just got some Trans Am data & to explain, we run a known VIN through the Comp 9 database and then we can extrapolate how many of that particular combination were built.
For this we used a known 1991 1LE Trans Am VIN 62 1LE's built, 43 exported to Canada, 19 delivered in the US of the 62, 27 of them were equipped with T-tops 12 of those delivered in the US None of the 27 with T-tops got air conditioning |
How about a 85 IROC, TPI, Red w/ red interior with ONLY 482 original miles? This was bought new by my stepfather and he passed away shortly after he purchased it.

That's a good one to have Jerry - the 85 was the first year for the TPI engine and it got the L69 cam which made great horsepower (for the day) and was a strong rival for the Corvette with the same engine. In 1986, they de-tuned the TPI engine because of that.
With only 482 miles, if it's been stored properly, that car would be worth well more than he paid for it - probably low to mid 20's, more if it has the optional Lear Siegler interior. http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...arojune222.jpg |

The car must be a 350 L98/Auto configuration with the A/C and Tony this may answer the rejection you got on your order. From my research above, the ONLY 1LE cars built with A/C were 350 Formulas. |
Really cool car! Gotta love the 1LE cars!
I think its great you're jumping on these 3rd gens now. I always felt these poor cars never got the respect they deserved, but you can slowly see the tides changing. The car looks amazing. There's just one thing... did the guy you bought it from really screw in a front plate holder on a car he just restored? :gag: |

I know the Big bird car is a 305 5spd, I'm not sure if it was a hard top or not or even a 91 or 2, I'll look tonight. There was even a pic of the window sticker. My order was not rejected by Pontiac, it was my dad that said no. LOL |
Ouch, that hurts!
The data on Compnine says no 305 TPI 1LE's with A/C, maybe a 92 but most of them were Hawks. If we had the VIN we could run it. |
I cant find my magazine (july 92) but I do have it copied and in my 3 ring binder.
It is a JY 92 formula 305 5speed hardtop with A/C, R6P with 1LE (the story also says it has g92 and G80 but that seems odd because g92 became r6p and g80 is included with r6p/1le) The window sticker picture is very small and didn't copy very well. If anyone has His contact info, I may be interested in buying it if he would consider selling. All the 91-2 red firehawks (B4U) were 350 auto cars. |
I've got a couple of the Hawk VIN's Tony which means I can pull the figures for 1992 - if I have the time today I'll get some numbers down.
|
Okay, here are the 1992 numbers and they don't match perfectly with the info you have on the yellow car or the cheat sheet on page one.
1LE production 1992 = 27, 17 Formulas & 10 TA's 1LE + B4U Hawks = 11, All Formulas 1LE + C60 = 11, All Formulas and all L98 and all B4U Hawks 1LE + MK6 = 16, 6 Formulas and 10 TA's 1LE + L98 = 11, All Formulas and all C60 1LE + Z49 Export Models = 6, All TA's and all MK6 1LE + CC1 T-Tops = 2, 1 Formula & 1 TA, both MK6 and both domestic We are missing 4 cars from the numbers in the cheat sheet on page 1, 3 Formulas & 1 TA - the yellow car could be one of these and it would be the only MK6 C60 that was produced in the 91/92 series if it's for real and coded as a 1LE. Rare cars every one of them, let the chase begin! |
I've heard from Jim Mattison himself that he had helped get the Big Bird order pushed through. (not sure if he was pulling my leg or what but he knew of the car)
I'd like a 92 ttop 1LE or A/C 1LE Formula, 350 or 305 5speed combo. |
1990 Numbers - No B4U Hawk or R7U Players Cup produced:
1LE production 1990 = 4, All TA's 1LE + C60 = 0 1LE + MK6 = 4, All TA's 1LE + L98 = 0 1LE + Z49 Export Models = 1 1LE + CC1 T-Tops = 2, both MK6 1 domestic and 1 Export 1990 numbers are complete - Compnine has a full data set for this year. 1991 Numbers including B4U Hawk & R7U Players Cup info: 1LE production 1991 = 106, 46 Formulas & 60 TA's 1LE + B4U Hawks = 9, All Formulas 1LE + C60 = 9, All Formulas and all L98 and all B4U Hawks 1LE + MK6 = 87, 27 Formulas and 60 TA's 1LE + R7U = 23, All TA's and all MK6 1LE + L98 = 19, All Formulas, 9 B4U Hawks 1LE + Z49 Export Models = 43, All TA's, all MK6, 23 R7U Players Cup Cars 1LE + CC1 T-Tops = 27, 8 Formula & 19 TA, all MK6 and 15 of the TA's were Z49 Export We are missing two numbers from compilation shown below which appear to be 2 TA's that were delivered domestically. 1992 Numbers including B4U Hawk & R7U Players Cup info: 1LE production 1992 = 27, 17 Formulas & 10 TA's 1LE + B4U Hawks = 11, All Formulas 1LE + C60 = 11, All Formulas and all L98 and all B4U Hawks 1LE + MK6 = 16, 6 Formulas and 10 TA's 1LE + R7U = 5, All TA's and all MK6 1LE + L98 = 11, All Formulas and all C60 1LE + Z49 Export Models = 6, All TA's and all MK6 1LE + CC1 T-Tops = 2, 1 Formula & 1 TA, both MK6 and both domestic We are missing 4 cars from the numbers in the compilation shown below, 3 Formulas & 1 TA - the yellow car from Musclecar Review could be one of these and it would be the only MK6 C60 that was produced in the 91/92 series if it's for real and coded as a 1LE. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...4&d=1457787388 |
Well done, You get a gold star !
|
Thanks for compiling this info Boss, it is very interesting and shows that in a time of large production numbers some of the 3rd gens are very rare. :D
|
It does amaze me that with over 2 million Firebirds & Camaros built between 1982 & 1992, there are still single digit cars.
