EHTTFMF!!! An attempt at a technical discussion.

So many threads that contain EHTTFMF and why the E-Head is such a great race head, I thought we could really discuss why this head is so great.

I will start with a few thoughts;

2.110" x 1.660" valve size

215cc volume intake runner

Patented "soup bowl" 72cc or 87cc chamber

Other benefits from Edelbrocks web site.

"These heads provide great torque and horsepower up to 5500rpm"

I just thought it was that EHTTFMF just rolls off the tongue and is fun to say.

Old Goat Racer 09-21-2016 04:18 PM

Some of us don't even know what EHTTFMF stands for. I prolly get the last 2 letters.
This thread should be interesting..............:noidea:

Funny part is is it's not a great head it's an epic pile of s*** for a race head . And almost anything should smash it on the track effortlessly. And the sad part is its still TTFMF.
That's what makes EHTTFMF is much fun.

JSPONT 09-21-2016 04:37 PM

It's the mass production, so many out there, and many to modify to flow well.
They are cheap, and work with off the shelf parts.

I'll start some more crap KRETTFMFER'S, DCITTFMFER'S LOL

BruceWilkie 09-21-2016 04:41 PM

EHTTFMF is out of respect for the old and handicapped...the younger guns let them sit up front. :D

It's not the mass production, it's the fact that competing heads that are design by people paying attention to a bunch of s*** that doesn't matter. Or solve one problem and create another or 2 or 5 .
So you get a head that is hardly better.

ho428 09-21-2016 04:50 PM

I always thought Edelbrocks were an Aluminum replacement street head, race heads started with the KRE D ports and went up from there.

By all means take the front seats. Butt Dyno sheets and Time Slips are required up there. If you can't provide then to the back of the line with you but don't worry seems there's lots of keyboards in front of those seats. Carry on.
Hehe:)

IMHO, only thing that make E-heads a "race head" is being able to make more modifcations vs the old original O-port heads.
If it wasnt for the new blocks, cranks, rods, pistons, way better power adders, etc., think you'd be make'n this much more power vs 20 years ago?

PAUL K 09-21-2016 06:42 PM

It's not a great race head, in fact far from it. What's good is it has the ability to produce 3000hp with a standard pushrod location. It also has the capability of producing around 1200 horsepower naturally aspirated.
It's really a decent quality street head that is readily available and can be bought off the shelf from several vendors economically at different stages of porting to support anywhere from 700 plus bracket builds to 1000 hp aftermarket block builds.
I believe it's won more races than any other head produced for a Pontiac. Also it's the only legal NHRA aftermarket Pontiac head.
There is an emissions legal version available for states that require it.

Paul although it has displayed a great deal of accomplishments, that doesn't technically describe why it's a great race head.

So a lot of people are saying it isn't a great race head. But are we talking about a bracket car or a heads up race car? Because I think it might be a great head for someone bracket racing or running a 10.90 class .

Pontiac Racers have always been handicapped with poor heads. That's what's cool about an Ehead. You can drag a Brodix headed BBC down the track with a Performer RPM street head. :)

... very good points, most are true IMO, i'd like to see them on the dyno making 3g's, maybe i'm wrong, but i do know what it takes to make that kinda power, i'd be very impressed to say the least ...

... the other part is to my knowledge there's only one engine that has made or exceeded 1000hp N/A and that's Leech and Co. so i wouldn't look at that as an automatic thing, those guys have done a great job with a big pair of hand cuffs on, but impressive to say the least, at this level one of the key limitation gets in the way, which is CSA, but they've done a great job working around it, but just not the norm for any other EHeaded combo certainly, i'd say for Pontiac engines the list of poeple that have made 1000hp or better is fairly short ...

... what i'd personally like to see is a set ov my CV-370/Raceplate heads on Leech's engine with one of Marcella's bad boy manifolds on top, now that would be very interesting IMO ...

Based on it's performance, a set of eheads ported by Tom Slawko made over 1K hp on a 525 engine. It is currently owned by Karl Owens (KO) on here and is for sale in the parts forum. BTW that engine was built in 2009.

One mite ask what is the definition of a "GREAT RACE HEAD".
Did that not start in late 1954?

The e-head broke open the market for aftermarket Pontiac heads. People were finally able to lust for something other than collectors item RA4's. It's since been eclipsed by newer designs but you can never take away its contribution to the hobby.

Same comments about the Indian Adventures IA-1 blocks.

Eric

PAUL K 09-21-2016 08:01 PM

Another nice feature is they are available without pushrod holes so you can easily put them where you want.
If you know the right people they can be had without the guides and seats installed.

I agree, the ability to increase CSA by getting the push rod out of the way is a great benefit.

Good question, the Hemi was designed 1951 I think. The 127/980 great heads for racing at the time.

The RAIV and SD heads also great at the time.

Its NOT ! its a pile of crap. It's just that all the rest are piles of crap too. So the smell doesn't stand out too much . Lol

Aaron Quinton 09-21-2016 09:13 PM

I have two sets of these heads. They are good quality castings. A basic copy of a RAIV is what I would call them. The chambers suck. The valve positions suck for a big bore, big valve. Their ability to increase CSA sucks. The LS3 heads on my GTO KILL compared to an out of the box Ehead.

Marcella doing the work to Leech's heads and delivering their numbers speak TON's to their ability. They have polished a turd to the MAX, well done guys. I can only assume max welding and intake ports encroaching into valve covers?

Nope. No welding no guides moved just ported. Pretty straightforward stuff. Only welding I've done on those Heads is when Mike decides to disassemble the motor the fast way. :D

You could say that it started then, but I'd say it first proved itself in 1957 at the NASCAR Daytona SpeedWeek- finishing 1st/2nd/3rd in class through the flying mile, 1st/2nd in class in the standing start mile, and 1st in the GN race.

As long as we are on the subject, what head is better for a reliable 600-700HP street/strip car, the Edelbrock or KRE's if they are both flowing close to the same CFM? Is one easier to buy at a medium level and then step up later with additional port work and cam change.

Are you talking about the dports or rpms vs Hiports? If you are referring to d ports. The Kre version is superior than the edelbrocks...not sure on the other..

100% stock locations other than pushrod holes. Hell they still have the factory iron seats in all but 3 spots. Poor number 3 :(
