65 GTO 'One of None'
 

Regretfully the time has come for me to part with my 65 GTO. PHS documented Tri Power with Automatic on the column (upgraded to TH 350). Original YR 389 Engine w/ 77 heads. 3.55 Safety Trac, Rally Gauges, Wood Wheel. NO PS or PB. Sold new by Trotter Pontiac in Chattanooga, TN. Frame off restored about 10 years ago that has been freshened twice since. The build was documented on two threads here:

The car now is running the dual carb setup with a 'one of one' ram air pan to duplicate the setup that was described in the article in Paul Zazzarine's book. It's built to be as you 'could' have ordered a car if Pontiac had went through with their original intended dual quad ram air option for 65.

I can hardly get in and our of the car now due to my health problems with my legs and feet. It has scored Silver Certificates in Concours judging twice at the GTOAA Nats and was chosen the 'Favorite 65 GTO' at the 2015 GTOAA Nats. I have no desire to continue to haul it around and show it as I have to have help to do that.

Pricing: I don't know of any comparable cars that have sold, BUT the asking prices for comparable cars start in the 50's and go up; sometimes way up. The cars that I see priced less always have problems; usually they don't have the original engine. This one does. Some have questionable restorations and other problems. I'm asking $45,000 and that includes the correct 65 tri power set up, plus all the 'day two' accessories from the first build. (cheater slicks and steelies, Radirs and M/T front tires, M/T valve covers, front drag shocks, and other bits and accessories).

Very nice car. Looks great. I like the 65 as my # 2 pick of cars wanted. Had most all but never had a 65. I almost bought one a long time ago but lost it after I helped the guy get it out of the yard it was in. He sold it out from under me to someone who offered him $ 25.00 more for it but never asked me to match the price. I haven't talked to him since.

Stinks you have to part with the GTO........GLWS and hope you can find pleasure with something less demanding on yourself.

Thanks Greg. As much as I love these old cars, especially Pontiacs, it looks like this will be my last. I can't work on them anymore, I can hardly get in and out of them anymore, and I just don't have the energy anymore. I still love the people, and the cars, and it's gonna be hard to be without one.

The car will be sold at the Mecum sale in Kissimmee, FL on Thursday, Jan 12.

Glws. Jerry. I think you should do well. You have a great car, that will stand out at the auction. Alot of cars look good on TV, but not so good in person.Alot of them tossed together strictly for these venues. See you there, as we are running our Black whirlwind tribute also.

not sure if seeing these cars in person is the smartest move for me at this point. May look at refinancing my house before making the trip to Florida!

Hi Jerry. When you taking your GTO down? I found out last week our 62 will be outside in a tent! Needless to say I was disappointed. Can't keep black clean while it sits inside, much less a tent! See you there!

We're planning on checking in on Monday afternoon. I figured we would be under a tent, I'm just hoping the weather is decent where the bidders will mingle out under the tents and not stay inside.

Loaded up and pulling out around 6 am. Hopefully arriving around 3 pm or so. Lot # 161 will sell on Thursday afternoon probably between 4 and 6.

That really sucks !!! He not only didn't get what he wanted, but had to pay $4000.00 plus in sellers fee's and the fee to be in the auction. Barret Jackson is hurting our hobby with these inflated numbers because when someone see's that $39,000 that's all they see. In reality the seller only netted around $34,000. That's a far cry from his asking price of $45,000. I'm sure if he knew or thought about the end result he would have much rather sold the car here to fellow Pontiac enthusiast for that price. On the other side of the coin though. He did get to experience the lights and camera's on the run way.

Actually I was able to negotiate a lower % or I was willing to bring it home. Mecum will work with you like that. Did I get what I wanted? No, I didn't but I got what the market seemed willing to bear at the time.

Yes, I believe the automatic hurt the sale of the car. Also I believe I should have reinstalled the factory tripower and pulled the dual carbs and ram air pan and just kept them.

Honestly there were a couple of 67's there that were probably nicer than mine. The rest of the early cars were not. Most were drivers at best. `And a large % of all the cars had issues. The restorations may have been very nice, but they had issues with being correct. Buyers had better do their homework!

I spent a lot of time looking over that car and talking with the owner. Claiming to be a 7700 original mile car, and it may have very well been. The interior still had that original 70's smell, something you can't reproduce. It wasn't a 455SD. It was supposedly a 74 455HO block and heads. IIRC the engine code was YY which, at quick check, showed up as a 74 455 engine. I couldn't find any casting code on the heads. The owner told me he had used two different year model Ram Air exhaust manifolds to get them to fit. The resto was first class all the way. Yes it was probably world record money, but it was a world record car. I dropped out at 40k.

Jerry,that number is more like I would have expected.57 was the hammer price as I remember so buyer was in the car for 60 plus,that's a tall number.I know you would not be able to do one for that but for that money you could get what I would consider a better ROI with a 69-70 car.Tom

Seller claimed he had over 100k in the restoration of the car. He claimed he used only NOS parts, no repops.

Yeah, I love this '65 GTO, but I would only want it with a 4-spd(or 5-spd?) stick shift. Someone got a beauty! ;)
