70 Formula RA3 or 72 Formula HO

Figured I'd throw this out there...worth a try anyways.

I am still searching for a number matching, 4spd, no A/C, 1970 Formula RA3 or a 1972 Formula HO. Considering any condition at the moment.

Please let me know if you are thinking of selling or know of any leads. Much appreciated.

Thanks.

Brewster has a real '72 455HO Formula with the M-22 4-spd/3.42 rear for sale. Numbers matching, Revere silver with black interior. A very nice car.

Dennis

Brewster 01-09-2017 02:29 PM

May I ask, why not a 71? Fender vents?

The fender vents on the 71s are okay its just that
I've always had a sweet spot for the 70 and I love the grille and ram air being standard on the 72s.

70FormulaCA 05-24-2018 12:32 AM

Had some prospects but didn't pan out...so I'm still in the hunt.

Please let me know of any leads....thank you!

nas t eh 05-24-2018 11:42 AM

There was an estate sale 70 ra3 Formula, a month or two back, did you miss it?

Think it was an automatic not a 4speed, but that would be a small compromise as it was a very nice car for the price..

70FormulaCA 06-22-2018 12:39 AM

still on the look out...

Thanks blue71ta, I sent you a PM.

Mister Pontiac 07-04-2018 11:36 PM

I have a friend with a numbers matching 70 RAIII/Auto for sale. If you have any interest in an auto, I can tell you more about the car and put you in touch with him. :)

Appreciate it Mister Pontiac but heart is set on a 4spd. Thanks!

Still looking...any leads appreciated. Thanks.

Judge273 09-18-2018 07:00 AM

You did see the 70 Atoll Blue 4 speed RA III on here for sale?

70FormulaCA 09-19-2018 09:28 PM

I was told that it doesn't have the born with engine/tranny, but I might be mistaken.

Judge273 09-20-2018 07:44 AM

I see....you don't know about the car then.

70FormulaCA 09-26-2018 12:38 AM

Unless there are two of them on this site, I know the car you are referring too. However, part of what I'm looking for is a number matching drivetrain.

I can't help but feel as though this car has been mentioned either here, or somewhere else on the forum - I believe it has been on eBay, noticed it in the Smoke Signals classifieds over Christmas, and now this morning I received a Hemmings alert of this same car - now at Volo:

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...1&d=1547743089

**Please note**
From reviewing Volo's pictures, and the video, it is apparent that the front end height has been corrected since this picture was taken - this is the same picture that I recall seeing from the ebay listing(s).

There has been ALOT of attention paid to the paint finish, and it reads as though this is a complete numbers car;
The only things that have me scratching my head about the restoration are:
- the seat covers and door panels look really flat
- the dash bird, and other painted details appear to all be faded/rubbed off (I would think that for a car of this caliber, these should have been cleaned up)
- leather wrapped Formula wheel (really? - why)
- I am not seeing a jack/spare in the car (pictures #62 & #63); but maybe they were removed for photos(?)
- the bumper used is either a 70-71 base/TA or 1972 bumper, OR the correct 70-71 Esprit/Formula bumper with the emblem mounting holes filled - as there is no bumper bird emblem

Volo makes a big deal about the wheels, saying it was special ordered with "Trans Am wheels" when in fact, although seldom selected, this was a regular option which was exclusive to the Formula.
The Volo video also says that this is more desirable than a same year/drivetrain Trans Am, and as bias as I may be, I know this to be blatantly untrue.

I find it odd that the car has:
- ralley gauges w/tach
- close ratio 4 spd (m21 incl/3.73:1)
- full chrome
- recessed wipers
- 15" Rally II's
- power steering (required with a Formula wheel)
... but no power brakes!? - Was this a goof up on the part of the original owner/order??
The chrome and recessed wipers seem to be in direct contradiction to the "stripper" feel of the rest of the car...

This is still one heck of a car... and iirc (from my two visits) Volo makes financing easier to get than a conventional private sale.

unruhjonny 01-17-2019 01:12 PM

I found the car!

A member here (at least recently) owned it!

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...5&postcount=28

And here!!

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=821616

At least my memory served me correctly...

70FormulaCA 01-17-2019 11:41 PM

Thanks unruhjonny!

unruhjonny 01-18-2019 01:11 AM

no problem;
I guess I should have mentioned that the big picture in post #33 is a direct link to the Hemmings listing... looking at it now, it's not very apparent.

citrusz 01-19-2019 12:48 PM

I saw that 70 Atoll blue Formula on carsonline.com a few months back for 45K.. Cant find the listing anymore. Has to be the same car. How many Atoll Blue 4 speed Formula's with no jack are out there?

poncho-mike 01-26-2019 12:17 AM

I know the guy who bought the car. There was a thread on PY when he brought it home several years ago. I am pretty sure that is the same one that ended up with a set of my JWs.

unruhjonny 02-28-2019 12:46 PM

@ 70 FormulaCA

If you're still looking, this popped up yesterday.

unruhjonny 03-01-2019 01:51 PM

it is also worth mentioning that a guy HERE has a NOS (std bore) 1970 SR engine dated July 6th 1970...
And the car I linked apparently has all the original parts except for the block.

Thanks unruhjonny for the heads up!

Happy to help.

I might not be able to afford anything myself, but I can sure try to help others find stuff!

70FormulaCA 11-18-2020 12:09 AM

Thought I'd bring this back up again to see if there is anything new out there...
